B747 For Domestic Flights In USA

Which airline operate 747 between USA airports, either scheduled or from time to time for training purposes.

Well, there are only 2 US airlines operating 747s so my guess is United or Delta..

QF operates a daily 747 flight LAX-JFK. However, they have no cabotage rights, so domestic passengers cannot travel on this leg – only those continuing from or onto an international sector.

There have been multiple threads on this topic of late..

Now chime in the non related to the OP....the ever famous I flew threads... a 747 between Chicago and Detroit in 1988 and Pan Am flew between Philadelphia and JFK in 1974 for one month!

Years back American, TWA, Delta, Northwest, United, Pan Am all flew 747's domestically in the 70's. The airlines were not deregulated and it was a I have them too additude.
American dicontinued them after they decided they had too many unsold seats to continue to brag.

DL use a 744 ATL-HNL... or at least did until recently.

Sometimes UA will operate ORD-SFO, but as far as I'm aware this is only when they are swapping frames between hubs.

Right now I believe they are running that daily. SFO-ORD-SFO on the 744.

I'm booked on the SFO-ORD in early April.

I don't think it's a frame swap. Same frame typically covers the roundtrip - for example today its UA 1570/1213 SFO-ORD-SFO covered by fleet #8482. Frames get swapped between SFO and ORD flights at PVG, NRT, and in the summer, FRA.

Back in the late 80s I often caught an NW 747-200 on flights 48/49 between BOS and DTW. This was a DTW-BOS-LGW operation, prior to NW holding direct rights from its Detroit hub.

I maybe wrong about it operating for one month. It was actually Clipper #110 that operated the "Golden Argosy" PHL-JFK-ROM. I cannot recall if they had local traffic rights, but they probably did not.

National, Continental, and Eastern also flew 747s in the early 1970s. Western apparently wanted to buy the 747 also, but didn't have the financial backing. Thus, Western never flew the 747.

Remember that in the 1970s, Pan Am wasn't allowed to carry traffic within the continental US. The only place they flew 747s domestically was LAX-HNL, SFO-HNL, SEA-HNL (I think PDX-HNL was a 707).

But yes, today it seems odd looking back at all the domestic 747s in the early 1970s.

reference to Pan Am 747 it was meant to be a joke as I was just trying to make a point how this topic always drifts from the OP...but they did for a while and yes it was the 110 flight with no local traffic..not sure of the dates but it was mid 70's

Now I'm guilty...lol

I will be the smart ass who says it. UPS, Kalitta and Atlas have dozens of domestic 747 flights each day. Cathay Pacific, Asiana. Korean and some others also have nonstop flights throughout the major US cities like JFK, ORD, LAX, SEA etc. They almost all fly though ANC when crossing the Pacific,

PeoplesExpress Airlines back in the early 1980’s used 747’s between EWR and DEN when they merged with the original Frontier Airlines and used the 747’s to connect their 2 hubs.

I think non-revs can use it too.

It basically depends on when ORD is running more 744s than can be rotated via international destinations.

Their timetable page shows an SFO - ORD outbound on the 25th, then returning that afternoon, as it has in March. So far, I've found one other date in April, but haven't had time to search the entire month.

Probably only if booked on the QF codeshare flight number. Otherwise it would technically be cabotage.

My only domestic 747 flight was equipment change: 777 was scheduled for UA IAD-LAX, replaced with 747 (was nice to get business on the upper deck... days before they switched business class food to "lunch boxes" in 2008).

Ive flown several in Ireland back in the day when EI flew the 747's between DUB-SNN then onto BOS & JFK, only 20 to 30 mins from gate to gate. Today you can drive from DUB to SNN in 2hrs

And yes, you could buy tickets for just the DUB-SNN leg.

Tower Air? Tiger Air (passenger division of Flying Tigers) with ex SQ 747's in the late 70's / early 80's...

Burned nothing but money up. They flew PHX-LAS/JFK/HNL, LAS-JFK, HNL-NGO. It also was flying at the outset of the oil crisis/Gulf War. Tower Air, the bastard of the airline industry, flew JFK-SFO/LAX/LAS/SJU/MIA amongst other routes.

IIRC, they were planning some type of code share with Ansett, presumably from HNL.
