NZ's new BNE lounge is to open on 16 March 2016, they had an media open day today to show it off.

Looks much better than the previous lounge, could now be the best lounge in BNE.

Well Jetstar sort just changed with there new Gate 62/63, that is an Regional Shed.

Anyone know why AIAL never took those airbridge brackets out from the early 2000s when Ansett New Zealand put it? was there plans to add an 3rd gate?

I noticed it last time I was in NSN (17 Feb), and only knew because the flight was announced - no markings on the aircraft at all, not even a sticker. And the Originair Jetstream (ECI) was sitting right next to it.

Flying boats, yes, several times, but not TEAL - they were on Imperial Airways/BOAC.

Its rather entraining to see an prop parked at gate 20/21 yet an A320 at the hardstand boarding by bus, sure its done wonders for there OTP.

They really next to re-number the gates at the Domestic Terminal, since you now have 60-64 next to gate 20!

Oddly, it shows a reduction from 5x weekly in October 2016 (which is the frequency all through winter 2016) to 3x weekly in November but then back to 5x weekly from the week of 12 December and through until March 2017. No 6x or 7x weekly shown yet even though the main summer listing has been adjusted from the previous 3x weekly.

Is November a period of even less demand than the winter, or is there still more change yet to come before the published schedule becomes definitive?

This part of the schedule is just reflecting the previous 12 months. AKL-IAH commenced Dec 2015

Yes. For example CHC-PER, AKL-RAR-SYD and AKL-RAR-LAX are still showing as 763s. And there's one 789 and most of another not in the schedule yet.

On Sunday ZK-NZD was in CHC for eight hours. AKL-CHC NZ6231 and CHC-AKL NZ6232.

food for thought. The quiet months at AKL as an airport this season and next are busier than the high season dec-jan just two years ago. NZ has had great growth in it's own right, but AKL has become a market capable of year round demand.

there are no doubt undisclosed announcements to come that may partially account for the IAH changes which will come out in the fullness of time.

"Air NZ electrifies its fleet - of cars"

Air New Zealand is buying 76 electric light vehicles, including 36 $80,000-plus BMW i3 cars for its sales force.

the airline says the switch to electric will save around 65,000 litres of fuel per year and it's creating what's believed to be the leading corporate electric vehicle fleet in New Zealand.
The BMW i3 was named New Zealand Car of the Year for 2015 and as well as being electric, it features a sustainable design with much of its interior and body made from the same carbon fibre as the fuselage of Air New Zealand's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. They have a sticker price of $84,000 although the airline is likely to have got a fleet discount.

Correct. Nine 789s available by 30 Oct 2016. Seven and a bit in the schedule. Varies slightly depending on the accuracy of airlineroute info that NZ176 Tu Th Sa and NZ178 We Fr Su is for the entire Northern Winter schedule. I have included PER-CHC and CHC-PER as a 789.

The $130,000 in fuel costs is not to be taken lightly. But 130 to 160km per charge on the i3 is not going to take anyone very far. Wonder what the recharging logistics will be?

A 788 with a Middle Eastern flag similar to the UAE's flew out of WLG today. Anyone know whose it was and what it was doing here? Hot on the heels of a US C-17 with their spy boss James Clapper which overlapped with an Iranian A340 with their foreign minister, Javad Zarif.

Interesting political dynamic here - the UAE and Iranian Foreign Ministers in town at almost exactly the same time. At a guess both are trying to shore up NZ support for their respective (and conflicting) positions on Syria. Doubt very much if there's any aviation component to their discussions!

I believe up until now only Q300's have overnighted with all ATR services being operated by crew who fly in and fly out on the same plane (e.g the first AKL-NSN plane is an ATR while the first NSN-AKL is a Q300). The new Wellington service in the morning would lead to the first overnighting ATR so some form of crew base would be required.

That aircraft typically seems to do a nice loop around the country AKL-NSN-CHC-ZQN-CHC-ZQN-CHC.

Would the crew probably need to change out by the first time they get to ZQN?

Eff. 28 Mar there will be two overnighting ATRs at NSN. There's now also NSN-AKL 0640/0805, AKL-NPE 0835/0935 etc. Just noticed this has been changed in the last few months.

Also there's been a recent change to the eff. 02 May Q300 BHE-CHC 0720/0810, CHC-HKK 0850/0935 etc.

The aircraft now overnights in CHC and it's CHC-BHE 0610/0700, BHE-CHC 0720/0810, CHC-HKK 0840/0925 etc.

I thought it might change to overnighting in WLG and be WLG-BHE 0630/0655, BHE-CHC 0715/0805 etc and take some WLG-CHC pax if the WLG-CHC 0645/0745 ATR was full.

Melbourne-based Virgin's cornerstone shareholders - Air NZ, Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Group - are each funding the new loan facility to let the airline review its mix of debt and equity capital, and consider operational initiatives to boost Virgin's cashflow and profitability, the airline said in a statement.

I reckon that NZ should buy out the others but keep the VA brand alive, and rationalize the fleet. Swap the VA 77W to NZ, and give VA some 789's

Possibly order more 789 to augment both fleets. Get rid of the VA Airbii.

Order some 787-10 for VA asia flying (perfect airplane for them, as is the 789)

Order some 777-9X for NZ growth and 77W displacement (note I said displacement and not replacement)

The displaced 77W allow the retiring of the 772 fleet and capacity upgrades.

Look at ordering the 737MAX for VA as a replacement for the 737NG fleet over time.

Order more A321NEO / A320NEO for both domestic and intl service.

Out of left field: VA gets some 779 to begin a decent SYD-LAX service. Or, some of the displaced 77W.

Well, that's my thoughts anyhow.

A full NZ takeover of VA? Ummm, that would likely just be seen as a big mistake (Ansett??).

VA has major challenges to overcome and NZ alone just can't support that. Such an appetite to take on a bigger airline just isn't a wise move.
