MOF's 727 Headed To Kansas City

Mon Mar 14, 2016 4:57 pm

News this morning from the National Airline History Museum in Kansas City (at MKC) that they've been given MOF's 727-223 (N874AA) to make room for the newly-restored N7001U. It was powered up this weekend for the first time since 2003, and they'll be prepping it for the ferry flight. Still got all fluids, so it sounds like she'll just need to stretch her legs a bit.

Great news! Although I hope they can give her a bath before she takes to the skies again.

I saw her during a visit to the MOF in August 2013 and was sad to see her all faded and dirty.

Perhaps the good folks at AA's Tulsa MX base could assist with a new paint and polish job
once she arrives in KC

Since I live here I'd love to see it when it arrives. Their website provides no clues on when it might be here. Any idea when this bird will be ready to fly?

Awesome news! Is the airline history museum the same one that has the L1011 and that TWA MD80 reverse colors? Does anyone know what their plans are for this jet?

This is very good news. This airplane was in serious danger of being scrapped.

Personally, I always thought the MOF could have just made room for her and displayed her beside N7001U, painted in AA's original orange and silver 727 livery. Not sure why MOF couldn't have made this happen.

They don't need two 727s and since they already do a poor job at representing everything not Boeing it would be pretty lame to have two 727s when there is no DC-9, A320, DC-10,

The MOF website lists 131 major artifacts (mostly aircraft). 16 are Boeings.

Reason 1 is they already have the prototype 727 in the house now.

Reason 2 is I don't think they'd have room in the new Aviation Pavilion
for another 727. From the photos I've seen, every square inch of
space will be spoken for once the new Pavilion opens.

Took a minute but I figured it out. Just in case anyone else doesn't want to ask, MOF = Museum of Flight in Seattle. Not sure why the initials were used, it's not like A.net charges per letter....

I can promise you she will be cleaned and looking good within a very short time. This past weekend some volunteers cleaned the inside and did a light cleaning on the outside. This afternoon I ordered as a donation the cleaner and polish to be used on the outside. It is hoped that the products will arrive by this weekend. Most of the work on the airplane will be done by volunteers on the weekends, so if you would like to help or just come by and visit please do so. All are welcome but if you have experience working on the 727 be it repairing or building them your help is very much needed, especially in the upcoming weeks. One last thing does anyone in the area have good contacts with a local oil jobber that may be willing to give the museum a good price or donation on oil, fluids and grease. Thank you everyone in advance.

Do you know if the bare aluminum belly of N7001U will also be polished up?

If I lived in the SEA area I'd be there in a heartbeat
the 727 is my all time favorite airliner
