WestJet Announces YVR-YHZ

Mon Mar 14, 2016 7:37 pm

Did a search but didn't see this posted yet. WestJet further expanding their Vancouver operations with seasonal, non-stop flights between Vancouver and Halifax. They're the only airline offering non-stop service from YVR to the Maritimes.

Good news for both Vancouver and Halifax!

6 1/2 hours westbound. That's got to be one of the longer scheduled 737 legs for sure. It'll be interesting to see how it does. Hopefully it won't need to make a fuel stop too often.

Is this Canada's longest flight? Is it longer than some Canada-LON/DUB flights?

They also announced YWG-YHZ 4x weekly, summer only.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

YVR-YHZ is longer than YHZ-GLA, but not quite as long as YHZ-LHR, although very close.

According to Great Circle Mapper and using flying times (westbound) from WS and AC:

LHR-YHZ (AC) - 2857 mi, 6:35
YHZ-YVR (WS) - 2760 mi, 6:21
GLA-YHZ (WS) - 2631 mi, 6:06

On a related topic, DUB is via YYT (St. John's).
Next flights: YQM-YUL-YVR-YUL-YQM / YQM-YYZ-HKG-DXB-BCN-YUL-YQM

Instead of crossing the Atlantic in about as much time, passengers on that night flight will have the opportunity to say they flew from one of the country to the other in one leg. Not sure it happened before.

On a related note, in the summer of 2000, Air Canada (AC) operated the YHZ-YVR route nonstop with the A319. It was later routed YHZ-YYC-YVR.

WestJet also operates YVR-MCO which is 5:25 and 6:33 on the return.

I wonder if their expansion in YVR has anything to do with their intent to start service to Asia?

Fares per mile for last minute flights from Vancouver to Asia have regularly been selling for 12 cents or less per mile the last while whereas fares from Vancouver to Europe have been regularly selling for 18 cents a mile.

The distances aren't that different.

Until the yields to Asia improve, I doubt WJ will bother with Asia anytime soon. There's far too much low hanging fruit in Europe.

I think it has nothing to do with that, but rather a reallocation of domestic capacity away from Alberta which is exactly what they said they were going to do.

It's the longest domestic nonstop. Until now the longest has been WestJet's YYC-YYT seasonal nonstop, at 2,695 mi, 65 miles shorter than YVR-YHZ.

I'd be surprised if 189 seats are filled, WS uses the 700 with 130 seats and its capped with less seats....

I think Turkish Airlines has to be up there with long B737 operations. They have a subfleet of B738s & B739s with extra fuel tanks that fly from Istanbul to various spots in East and Central Africa, doing close to 3000 nm in each direction.

I remember that. Was around the time of the Air Canada - Canadian merger, when AC had a huge percentage of the domestic market in Canada, and was trying all sorts of different routes.

WS has at least one flight that does a YVR - YYZ - YHZ same-plane service.
