I'm scheduled to be on one in early May from MCO-ATL, and yes I chose the flight since it showed the 321.

Seems not too long ago they were using 767's.
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

They still are. We got at least a half dozen DL 763s into MCO today. However only like 2 were from ATL. Most were from DTW or MSP. the 757 has been the Mickey Mouse Express bird of choice for DL recently.

last time a looked ATL-MCO (and FLL) had a ton of 753s on it.

No regular 767 but it seems like both of those cities see a 67 almost every day because they sub an international bird in.

Good idea, thanks! I'd been checking the aircraft page which still doesn't have it, but the booking engine does. Interesting to note on the day I randomly chose (11 July, I think) all but 2 of the ATL-MCO flights are A321!

They are moving into Florida in a quick hurry.

I would look at all the short haul to mid haul ATL 757 flying, it sounds like that is a good hint on where they will be going.

Minor nitpick, but it's A321, not A-321.

Congrats to DL. The A321 is an excellent aircraft. Hope they furnish the cabin to be not quite as horrid as their 739ER.

This is one of many posts I've seen, over the years, in here, of people disgusted because their favored company has ordered any Airbus plane. I find it ridiculous. And I don't see nearly as many posts in the opposite direction: Europeans offended because, say, LX ordered their first Boeing aircraft in decades. Nobody writes "I was hoping LX would stay away from American planes". Why this asymmetry? And why do people express these feelings in here? If I had those feelings (which I don't), I would be too embarrassed to expose them in public, because, to me, they are tantamount to xenophobia.

It's a personal opinion...nothing more, nothing less. I find it ridiculous (and I'm not accusing you of it) that some folks get flamed by both sides for having a strong, personal opinion of one manufacturer/airline vs. another. This board is supposed to be a place where we can all come and air it out with the common theme that we are all aviation nuts...

But I digress...

Does anyone with DL inside knowledge if they're planning on throwing these things on premium transcons (i.e. JFK-LAX/SFO) soon? Or will they be sticking to the 757's?

True. I love Airbus planes and prefer them on my travel choices over Boeings, if possible. But, man, I can't wait to see the 777s here with LH!

How many A32X will Delta receive in the next few years?

Just taking a guess, but I'm assuming they would leave that route on 757s as they currently assign those planes it to international routes (like MAN out of JFK) that require the same kind of product. A321 wouldn't be able to do that.

It also makes sense to put a lot of cycles on planes that are easy to replace, and save the 757s for routes that could really use them. That is not a major concern now as Delta has so many 757s, but when the numbers drop in the future, I expect those remaining planes to serve very specific purposes.

No inside knowledge but I highly doubt they will be pulling the 75s off transcons anytime soon. But eventually those planes will need to be replaced and the 321 is the logical replacement. For now the 75s are already configured for the service, provide more capacity, provide more range, and more versatility to rotate in/out of their international network.

these should be for short hops to leisure destinations like Florida. It's gonna be a relatively dense plane, having 20 more regular E seats than American's new A321s (149 vs 129) with most of that coming out of EC/MCE (36 on AA vs 23 on DL). It also has more 2 more total seats than B6's standard A321's, despite B6 not having an F cabin. They actually have the same number of E (149) with B6 41 E+ seats. For comparison, AA's A321Ts have the same number MCE seats as E (36) and nearly the same number F and J (30). B6's mint A321s are much less dense. They have almost 1/3 fewer regular E seats as this plane (102 vs 149) and the ratio of E to E+ is about 2.5x as many, whereas this plane has 6.5x as many (149 and 23). DL's transcon 757s are almost the same - 1/3 fewer regular E seats as the A321 (108 vs 149) with 2.5x as many E as EC (108 and 44). The one premium cabin area it is better than the competition is It will have 4 more F seats than AA (16 vs 20).

Also, DL went with the CFM engines, which are more cost effective on short hops than longs. Had they been going for transcon, they likely would've selected V2500s (my understanding is that CFMs are lower maintenance cost but higher fuel burn wereas the V2500s are lower fuel burn and higher maintenance).

Source on the seating:

http://news.delta.com/delta-add-15-airbus-a321-aircraft

Quote:
Delta's first A321 will begin service in early 2016, with 20 First Class seats, 23 extra-legroom seats in Economy Comfort and 149 seats in Economy, which are among the widest in the industry. Each A321 will feature in-flight Wi-Fi, industry leading in-flight entertainment with live satellite TV and on-demand options, and standard 110v power at every seat.

Delta has a lot of young (under 15 year old, a couple close to 12 years) 757s. So hopefully there'll be something new out (NSA?) by the time these are retired, assuming they will be kept until they are 30 years old.

Airbus employs USA workers. A USA investor can buy EADS stock with a slight bit of extra effort compared to buying an American exchange equity. EADS has as many USA subcontractors as Boeing has non-USA ones.

Various entities have vested interests in keeping these flames fanned (votes, tax breaks, etc.) I'm as big a fan of Americna Exceptionalism as the next patriot, but I'm also practical. This ain't a fight that needs to be fought.

Looking at the seat map I notice that there is indeed a mid-cabin lavatory, which is sorely missing from the 737-900ER equipment (I avoid those things, and book away from, if I can).

Question. Is the "exit" shown in the middle of EC a true 2L boarding door, or is it just an exit?

2L, 3L and 2R, 3R are solely to be used as Exits only. They are smaller type doors designed for quick evac. I suppose that if there was a malfunction with the 1L door, they COULD use it as an entrance/exit, but I see them using 4L for boarding/deplaning before using any of the middle exits.

So. During the signings with the finance guys did Airbus push the Silver, Gold or Platinum extended warrantees? Did DL bite on the fabric and paint protector? Or go for the Nitrogen filled ties? And did they get the first three oil changes free?

I can't imagine they will in the shortrun as it would require a dedicated subfleet of more A321's. It made sense for AA to go that route since they were entirely getting rid of the 762 fleet. It probably doesn't make sense for DL since the 757 is still perfectly serviceable and already configured for the market.

Or go for the Nitrogen filled tires?
@TVNWZ, I don't know if you knew or not, but nitrogen is the only thing in aviation tires so I guess it's a freebie. The other "options", that's on the DL bosses and how good the salesman/woman were. No pinstriping, no need. Floor mats? Maybe an a/c wash during those "oil changes" though....

Do you really think that expressing that you hate it when your airline buys any Airbus plane adds a lot of value to any discussion? I doubt it.

RE: DL Takes Delivery Of First A-321

I find it Ironic that Delta was one of the main instigators of the original A320. They went to Airbus and asked for a twin jet that carried 150 passengers to 2200 NM with 50% de fuel usage of the 727.

Airbus diced the 3-11 proposal and went with the 150 Single aisle twin based on the old french design, revamped everything, Delta did not buy a thing but Airbus gathered 400 orders al EIS…the rest is history…

Congratulations Delta and Airbus, now if I get the chance to fly in one of those A321, it will make me happy since I have been twice in their new 739ER and I found the old 739 a very nice ride. (well lavs are another theme).

Quoting skymiler (Reply 30):Question.

LH does use 2L for boarding at hard stands only. The engine nacelle is too close to the door to allow for regular jetway operations.

Sorry........I'll make an offering to the hyphen gods.

And, to be sure, it's Dash 8 not - 8! (or hyphen 8 for that matter...)

Congratulations to Delta and Air-Bus!
