CNN's New Low - MH370 Was An Airbus 737-300

Wed Mar 23, 2016 12:17 pm

I was just browsing news this morning and I believe I've made a determination that you really can't depend on CNN. They've just published an article of how a possible MH370 debris was found in South Africa, something that had been discussed on this forum several days ago. What's funny is that they have confirmed that the piece belonged to the missing Airbus... Apparently they haven't been watching CNN in the past 2 years..... I don't know if they'll be stupid enough to leave the articles on for too long but this is the current link:

http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/23/world/...70-engine-cowling-found/index.html

And the text:
(CNN)A piece of what appears to be a Rolls Royce engine cowling has been found on a beach in South Africa, according to officials.

The Malaysian authorities say a team will be sent to retrieve the item, which it will examine to determine if it is part of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared without a trace in March 2014. Since then it has become one of the biggest aviation mysteries of all time, although at least one piece, discovered on the western Indian Ocean island of Reunion in July 2015, has been confirmed to have been from the Airbus 737-300.

Shouldn't they have someone proof reading the news they report? Richard Quest perhaps?

I don't think this is as much dishonesty as it is stupidity.

The saying, paper never refuses ink, springs to mind here.

But your right, there is quite a bit of reporting around the world that is downright dishonest.

IMO, if the press wants to make a big deal of their need for absolute freedom to report the news accurately, then they better make f__king sure its accurate.

Honesty has got nothing to do with this - the words you are wanting is "accuracy" or "inaccurate".

Or do you think CNN was deliberately trying to lie to you about the aircraft manufacturer and type for some reason....?

Just remember, as often as the main stream media gets things wrong on aviation, they get details wrong on almost all other topics just as frequently. Once you understand this, you'll be skeptical of all their other stories as well.

It is likely that the journalists are regular readers of A.NET and are doing it on purpose, to see how long they can get away with it, before they get the call.

They know that 99% of their readers won't spot it, but enjoy pulling the leg of those that do.

Last week I talked to DL customer service because of a time and equioment change.

The agent told me I was booked on a Boeing, I replied online tool is showing me an Airbus, she said its an Boeing A 320. So I explained her that this is indeed an Airbus. Silence, followed by "Oohh".

Anyway I got what I wanted and they rebooked me for free. Great customer service and I could give something in return back to DL by teaching the agent.

This perfectly sums up the distinct lack of knowledge most journalists have in regards to aviation. You can't even claim this was a wild typo, how you get Boeing 777-200 to Airbus 737-300 is beyond me. Just check out the article linked at the bottom titled 'MH370: Did the pilots do it?'

I wonder if this is some way to catch smaller, shadier news outlets who copy their stories word-for-word? I've heard of authors doing stuff like it before to catch plagiarists. All they'd have to do is search "Airbus 737-300" on google after a few days to find all the sites to send their legal team after.

He is clueless, unless being an aviation 'expert' just means you're interested in aviation, he has no experience as a Pilot. let alone working as one.

Next to the all time winner of aviation ignorance, Mary Schiavo, however he looks like Neil Armstrong.

Why CNN turns to these idiots when they have several real experts including active Airline Pilots is beyond me.
The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.

If one were to take away Richard Quest's magic pen, he wouldn't be able to convey a thought, aviation or otherwise. His aviation credentials are a little thin to be hinted as an "expert"!!

HAHAHAHA! You speak as if all pilots are experts on aviation.

They may be competent at flying a plane (well, most of them anyway) - but there is much more to aviation than merely flying a plane.

Do you ask taxi drivers to give "expert opinions" on the road networks? Or to explain the causes of motorway pileups? Or to critique the latest car technologies?

I remember an edition of Airliner World magazine where a picture of a TK 777 is identified as a 737. Aircraft identification mistakes happen a lot more than we think.

In CNN case they're going non-stop 24/7 so they'll make more than a few mistakes in their online news releases. Not sure about this but way back on 9/11/01 when over 80 US bound flights were diverted to YHZ, and Gander Newfoundland may have been mixed up - like Halifax was in Newfoundland and Gander was in Nova Scotia...

It is not just aviation.

I recall reading a story in the Times about money laundering.

Apparently, if a lawyer suspects a client, they must contact the authorities before telling their client.

Wrong. If you tell the person you suspect you could easily go to prison.

If the Times drops such clangers, why expect better from CNN.

Nothing new at all

Lets see in the 18 years I have been in the industry, some of the finest news broadcasts:

An "expert" who was unvetted and brought on the air saying that Alaska Airlines Flt 261 was brought down by the aliens

Colgan 3407 was perhaps caused by the pilot not using carb heat

"Boeing products are Terrorist Friendly" (After the 9/11 attacks)

And my favorite ... The 777 will struggle to maintain altitude after running out of fuel
