Burbank Airport Searches For New Marketing Name

Thu Mar 24, 2016 9:31 pm

After several years of debate, the folks at the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority have teamed up with the branding firm to come up with a better name for the airfield in an effort to attract more passengers.

While the airport would retain its legal name of Bob Hope Airport, there is a desire to improve consumer knowledge of the airport by using a better known geographic identifier.

The 4 finalist names to branding firm came up with.

o Burbank Hollywood Airport
o Hollywood Burbank Airport
o Burbank Los Angeles Airport
o Los Angeles Burbank Airport

As example of how geographic identifier can help and airport, it has been brought up how MHT adopted the branding name Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and saw 19% increase in passenger enplanements by travelers residing outside New England.
Similarly online web searched searches would provide the airport with improved traffic if a more popular geographic identifier was attached to the airport.

Four new names for Bob Hope Airport are suggested for attracting more travelers

Personally I think using the 'Hollywood' name would be best as the airport until 1978 was known as Hollywood-Burbank Airport and is geographically close to Hollywood.

What makes it so great?

(They should have replaced the original terminal 30 years ago. Against that backdrop, the name change is something of a joke.)

Do I remember correctly that PSA's bag tags showed "HWB" for Hollywood-Burbank back in the mid/late 70's? I know they used that title in their schedules and announcements, and I remember being surprised the first time I saw BUR on a bag tag. Am I remembering this wrong?

BUR has already had 6 names since it opened in 1930. Source Wikipedia:

United Airport (1930-34)
Union Air Terminal (1934-40)
Lockheed Air Terminal (1940-67)
Hollywood-Burbank Airport (1967-78)
Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (1978-2003)
Bob Hope Airport (2003-present)

Correlation is not necessarily causation...

The whole MHT renaming thing caught a lot of flack here on a.net, FWIW.

But hey, sticking the name Hollywood into the name costs next to nothing.

It's a hell of a lot closer and more convenient to Hollywood than LAX is, and in many ways Burbank has a larger business/spiritual connection to Hollywood than to Los Angeles as a whole. I think Hollywood-Burbank Airport has a nicer ring to it but any one of those is better than just calling it Bob Hope Airport.

I like something with Hollywood in it as well. It's synonymous with Los Angeles without being one more thing around here that is named LA when it's not in LA.

At minimum, if you want to use LA, call it Burbank-Los Angeles County airport.

But I like Burbank-North Hollywood airport, as it's geographically accurate but still informs everyone that it is the LA area.

Was there twice last week via SW. Funky but fun airport. While wandering around the tiny terminal I noticed a sign board promoting the new yet to be built terminal. Evidently the active runway is 150' from the terminal and FAA requires 300'. Maybe they will build on the old Skunk Works site now demoished.

Been hoping for a new terminal thee for 20 years, and will probably still be waiting for the ground breaking when I die. ( I am 45 now, so...)
Like the airport. Very easy to get in, out, and I like train service at almost the front door.

Oh and I saw , I mean heard about, it shown in a porn movie, so close to the studios of that sort I suppose why.

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

I love that formulation; it's nearly the ultimate in corporate BS marketing. Attach a name of a city where something isn't, and then leave the real information in a prepositional phrase. (Still more honest than something like the New York Jets or calling it Frankfurt-Hahn.)

Here in the UK we have 'London Southend Airport'... I'm still trying to establish which part of my home city Southend is in.

As for Burbank I would acknowledge its history and name it 'Skunk Works International'

Probably the same part as "London Gatwick", "London Luton", and "London Stansted". Don't blame the airport especially, all four, along with City and Heathrow are officially London airports according to the UK Government and IATA, although only City and Heathrow are within the Mayor of :London's domain . Search using the city code LON instead of individual airport codes, and flights from all six airports appear as appropriate.

Does Los Angeles have a three letter IATA city code, and if it does, is Burbank included?

To me it will always be Hollywood-Burbank Airport. I find it great and even worth a connection to get there (I'm in Dallas). It avoids the mess that is LAX, and if your ultimate destination is anywhere near the San Fernando Valley, it is a much better choice. Having said that, however, I absolutely hate the current rental car building - it used to be much nicer when the rental cars were right outside the baggage claim (for LAA, UA, DL, AS, at least) compared to the hike it is now. But having Amtrak right outside is pretty nice too.

If you're within that city's borders or managed by that city's airport authority, are you allowed to use their name first ? Even BWI has to be Baltimore first, Washington second. They can do Burbank/Los Angeles Hollywood Intl, but that's a big mouthful. (try saying the full name of BWI 5 times fast).

In some European airports, the London airports are just listed as "London-LHR" or "London-STN". If there's any agreement, they can all do "Los Angeles-LAX", "Los Angeles-BUR", and "Los Angeles-ONT".

But as of now, I don't really see anything wrong with BUR. It's a niche airport for those who value convenience, and serves its purpose well. Be glad they can't going through what ONT is.

UA has that problem too - calling "New York/Newark, NJ". CRL is "Brussels South", Azul calls VCP as "Sao Paulo-Campinas". Azul has insane bias here. They call it SaoPaulo-Campinas and SaoPaulo-Congonhas, but then GRU is referred to as just "Guarulhos".

But then again, we even accepted YMX as "Montreal-Mirabel"

But the single worst offender in terms of stretching airport names was probably Skybus of CMH.

Burbank surrounded by Los Angeles on 3 sides, and Glendale on the other. The airport is right on the border with Los Angeles.

Yeah, with dual jet bridges. Let's make it ready for A380 diversions too. No need without a concurrent runway extension   Nah, seriously, the fact they're adding a parking structure when it's as expensive as LAX terminal parking already shows that the demand would be there if the local guys find a way past the NIMBYs.

Much like SNA that way. Often gets beat up by NIMBYs, but nonetheless appreciated by the actual flyers.

Both sides have their bias. UA naming it as such to make it sound like an equivalent of the ones across the river. AA/DL just calls it "Newark NJ" with no reference to "NYC" or "New York" anywhere, in a way to showcase how their hubs are the "true" New York airports.

Typical game of chess, nothing to see.

Sounds like the Chicago Bears. When George Halas and Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley were both still alive they went at each other regularly when the Bears wanted to re-locate, one time in Arlington Heights. Mayor Daley said they could then call themselves the Arlington Heights Bears if they wanted to, but not the CHICAGO Bears. Not all that many years ago, Mike McCaskey, when president of the Bears, thought about re-locating to Gary, Indiana.....I cannot imagine calling them the GARY Bears.

I like Hollywood / Burbank airport.

Or just do it the BWI way of lumping everything together : Hollywood-Burbank-San-Fernando Bob Hope Airport ..... which is still easier to read than "Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport ".

MUC has one of the cleanest names - just "Munich Airport" / "Flughafen München".

Both sides have their bias. UA naming it as such to make it sound like an equivalent of the ones across the river.

And that makes perfect sense for UA as they don't have a EWR equivalent across the river

In that case they can easily go with Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport. Once you start with "directional accuracy" beyond largest town in the metro area it's a slippery slope.

While I like the Hollywood name, IMO it could generate confusion with Hollywood, FL. And this is a domestic airport folks.

All due respect to Hollywood, FL but no one will mistake it with Hollywood, CA, even the locals.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, but as a Floridian that works in the airlines, its just Fort Lauderdale to everyone

UA has to. Some people still has no idea that EWR is really close to NYC and it's not even that much further than JFK from Manhattan.

I know. I grew up in CT and had no idea where EWR was till my mid 20s or so.

It's official name is "Franz Josef Strauss Munich Airport / Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauß".
