I think this thread has been opened already 4 times...

Anyway I wonder if this would be the effective ban of Egyptair in the EU and the US? A hijack in this time and age seems unbelievable.

the latest-
Associated Press
CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's civil aviation authority says an EgyptAir plane has been hijacked while flying from the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria to the capital, Cairo.
A Cypriot government official says the hijacked plane landed on Tuesday morning at the airport in Larnaka and that there are suspicions of a bomb on board.
A second Cypriot official says there "seems like there's more than one hijacker." He says there have been no demands other than that police vehicles move away from the aircraft.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity under regulations.
The statement from the Egyptian aviation authority says the MS181 is an Airbus and that it has 55 passengers on board and five crew members.

I wonder if this might be related to the ongoing struggle between Islamist / Muslim brotherhood and the Egyptian government. In any case, unbelievable that somebody can still successfully hijack an airliner at this age, and even one that belongs to an airline that isn't blacklisted from the EU.

This sounds like an asylum seeking hijacker trying to go to the EU, since it was a domestic Egyptian flight. Reminds me of the 2000 domestic Afghan Ariana Airlines flight that was hijacked and diverted to London and looks similar to the 1996 Sudan Airlines hijacking that was first also diverted to Larnaka, Cyprus with claims of a bomb on board, before being refueled and ordered to fly to London. Will be interesting to see if this aircraft will be heading to Germany or UK in the near future.

Wait ! We don't know if they entered the cockpit. The threat of a bomb could be enough to follow the demands of a hijacker and land at the requested airport.

I was just going to ask the same question but then again, someone smuggled a bomb on board of that Russian plane which also left Egypt... So it really doesn't surprise me to much if the report about the explosives belt is being confirmed.

According to Israeli news website YNET, IAF fighter planes were scrambeled in case the hijacker tries to divert the plane to Israel.

The hijacker basically just threatened that he had a vest/belt bomb. There's no reports that there's actually a bomb on board.

That said, it would be foolish to believe that Egyptian airport security services are trustworthy enough to put your life in their hands.

According to Dutch newssite NOS.nl the hijacker is wearing a bomb-vest, which is confirmed by EgyptAir and the authorities.

No breaching of the cockpit, just the threat to blow up the plane was enough to divert the aircraft.

Cheers!

I am not surprised at all by this. My experience at CAI was one of couldn't care less staff. Transiting on MS through CAI, I forgot a bottle of water in my bag. The 'security' staff scanned all bags, but didn't check monitors for the contents, so my drink wasn't detected or taken. That was early in the morning - tough to get going at that time of day - and now we have this early morning incident. The hijacker probably knew he had a better chance of achieving goals by doing this on a domestic flight.

There is a chance that it could be a fake explosive belt. Simply something wrapped around their body made to look like an explosive. That way he can pass through security as it wouldn't show up and he gets what he likes because the crew cant risk it.

Was curious about the motive(s) and/or intent(s) of the high jacker(s), not any of the pilots.

ATHENS, March 29 (Reuters) - Cyprus broadcasting (CYBC)reported that the hijacker of an EgyptAir plane that was forcedto land in Cyprus on Tuesday may have personal motives.
The hijacker had an ex-wife in Cyprus, CYBC said.
Witnesses said the hijacker threw a letter on the apron ofthe airport in Larnaca, written in Arabic, asking that it bedelivered to his ex-wife, who is Cypriot. (Reporting by Michele Kambas; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

another update -

if this guy's a doctor, can't wait for those Yelp reviews

CAIRO (AP) -- The Latest on the hijacked EgyptAir plane that has landed in Larnaca in Cyprus. (all times local):
10:15 a.m.
An Egyptian government spokesman says the hijacker of an Egyptian aircraft forced to fly to Cyprus wanted to go to Istanbul but was told by the captain that he did not have enough fuel for the journey.
The spokesman, Hossam al-Queish, also told the private CBC TV network that authorities could not confirm that the hijacker, identified as Egyptian national Ibrahim Samaha, had explosives on him.
The channel also showed a photo of Samaha standing in what appears to be the back of an aircraft. He was said to be a doctor.
The director of the Alexandria airport, Hossni Hassan, says there were 26 foreigners on board, including eight Americans, four Britons, four Dutch, two Belgians, a French national, an Italian, two Greeks and one Syrian. He said three other foreigners could not be identified.

Totally different experience when I boarded a flight to LXR. Any open bottles of water were poured into a bucket and the water was used to wash the floors. Sealed bottles were collected and returned to the nearby vendor to be sold again. No doubt the security team received a " tip" for this novel form of recycling.

Good point, if he was kept out of the cockpit and the pilots just followed his demands I think they did the right thing considering the level of Egyptian airport security. Seems like this guy found quite a creative way of crossing the Mediterranean compared to typical asylum seekers, though I wonder whether he'll be deported back to Egypt.

Seems totally plausible they load up with enough fuel at say the beginning of the day to do several flights without a top up. My understanding is that flights between major centres in NZ often do multiple legs without being refueled so I would imagine the same is done elsewhere.

The efficiency of only carrying what you need compared the to costs of topping up after every flight.

Working as Security Agent, i will give you some infos about the rules

It's ICAO via Annex 17 which publishes measures to prevent and suppress all acts of unlawful interference against civil aviation.

Then Civil Aviation Authorities have to implement a Security Programme in accordance with Annex 17. UE has also its Security Programme, which add more measures.

Furthermore IATA publishes every year, a new version of Dangerous Goods guide.

Depending the level of threat and the configuration of the airport, Authorities can add more measures. We call this a Local Security Programme.

2 Examples :

Tel Aviv has security checks before to enter into the Terminal. It's not obligatory cause, the terminal is a public zone for ICAO.

At Paris CDG, prefect decided long time ago, to create two restricted aeras, instead of 1, as we can see in many airports.

Security restricted area
Critical part of the Security Restricted Area

There are hundreds of example.
