UAL 1246: FA Deploys Slide "On Purpose"

Mon Apr 04, 2016 8:12 pm

A United Airlines employee has been removed from duties after airline officials say she pulled the emergency slide on a plane. It's not clear why this was done, but airline officials say they believe the attendant did it intentionally.

And if it was deployed, that was quick turnaround for it's flight to FLL.

I'm sure they swapped out aircraft. At a major hub like IAH, it shouldn't have been too tricky to find a spare aircraft, especially with 140+ 739's in the fleet (# according to wikipedia, so could be a bit inaccurate, but I know they have a lot)

They more that likely swapped the plane and repaired the other aircraft. The fact that it is a major hub doesn't really play much into the new plane role as much as the fact the IAH is a major base, and likely had a slide on hand to be installed.

I was on a WN flight out of DAL many a moon ago when a slide was accidentally deployed, I assume by catering since it was on the right side of the aircraft.
The slide was replaced and we pushed back only 45 minutes late. I was impressed even though it was a Mx base.

Video of the deployment and the FA making a quick exit.

I think she may have been having a bad day.

Doesn't it cost something like $20K to repack one of those slides?

What is she doing with the bag she threw out? Is she just sitting next to it?

Ship 0410 in from SMF, Ship 0440 out to FLL.. It was already scheduled that way before this 'event'. Thru flights rarely use the same aircraft in and out. Ship 0410 did go to FLL... But as UA2023 at 1641hrs.

The FA working up front stores their bags at the L1 door so she had immediate access to it when she decided to quit her job in a rather unique way.

I see she only took her small hand bag, so she left her larger roll aboard bag behind.

Looks like the jetway had yet to be positioned. Maybe she got tired of waiting.

Seems reasonable. Not.

Awesome video. I was trying to figure out how someone would happen to catch it, then I realized that it was a cellphone video of security camera video being played back on a monitor. Sadly, someone will probably get fired for videoing the security video and leaking it to a reporter. "Sadly", because otherwise we would NEVER have had the opportunity to see it.

I can see why United "thinks she did it intentionally". Um, yeah. The big wave at the plane (at least I think that's what it is) is a clue.

Hmm well we were always told that if we blew a slide by accident then we might as well grab our bag and jump but I guessed that our instructors were just making fun.

I don't know why she chose to do that, we've all had bad days and resisted the temptation and I have been involved in an inadvertent slide deployment (though it was not me who did it) and dependant upon where the aircraft happens to be can result in a lengthy delay. I believe we were delayed around 4+ hours as we were an outstation and a replacement had be be driven over from MSE (I think) as we had a couple of aircraft stored there temporarily, incidentally when we had to get the batteries replaced there was a 14+hour delay as they too had to be shipped over from Kent... In hindsight given the penchant that TF-ELV had for breaking it would have been prudent for the guys at Islandsflug to have a small parts store at BRS at the time but I digress. (Still it's all happy memories).

To steer myself back on topic, if they couldn't have replaced the slide they could still have operated the flight but would need to class the door as inoperative and reduce the passenger load accordingly - although that depends on the crew level situation in this case. I'm not sure what the FAA regs are regarding U/S doors and truth be told my memory of CAA & JAROPS has faded quite a bit over the last 8 years

I feel awful for her, it will be hard to get a job other than flipping burgers somewhere for a while after that stunt. Maybe someone at United can get her some counseling/therapy before firing her to try and save her career.

I don't. That's really no way to behave, and she unnecessarily costed United at least $25-30K for that stunt. If it were an accident, then I understand. But that does not seem to be the case.

Well, If it was an accident I don't see why she could not simply be retrained.

I had an accidental deployment back in the 90's as ground staff at Southwest. We used to open the Galley Door (R1) on the 737 to "drop" the excess carry-ons we had to check in down to the ramp below in order to speed up the loading of the last minute bags.

Well, the Flight attendant, also eager to "speed up" her duties, had armed the door and not said anything. She didn't put the flag across the window, so I just reached for the silver handle and yanked the door open and "poof" - instant fun! Well, being 21 years old, I grabbed 2 of the gate-checked bags and jumped down the slide with them and handed them to the astonished rampers!

Naturally we had to call contract maintenance to replace the slide pack. But in those days Management was much more reasonable, and we just got a good slap on the hand and some retraining and warning "don't do that again". The management acknowledged that we were all under pressure to do 10-minute turns in those days, and just chalked it up as "sh*t happens".

As to jumping down the slide with the bags, hey I figured I may never get that chance again. I know the slide was a gonner, and the story I've just told became a bit of station lore for years afterwards. Southwest had a jaunty streak of fun about them in those days, and everybody including the management had a good laugh about the ops agent who "took the initiative" to jump down the slide with the gate-checked bags. Sadly I doubt they'd have that good natured reaction today but it makes a nice memory and goes to show that folks can be reasonable when an honest mistake occurs.

Wow that sounds a lot like B6 F/a Steven Slater, who pulled a similar stunt in 2010. I remember boarding a United flight a few weeks after that incident and the cabin crew had a picture of Steven Slater hanging in the galley of the 763 for all boarding passengers to see.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JetBlue_flight_attendant_incident

No doubt theres a lot more to this story then "just having a bad day"..

I agree with you, it is not the way anyone should behave. That is why she needs help from somewhere to find out why she did it. If she just wanted to quit United, well she did it, but there are other ways to it without committing career suicide. I may be wrong, but I think this is a cry for help, not giving two weeks weeks notice to her employer she is leaving her job.

I thought the only purposes of a thru flight were that these flights would appear higher in search engines, while the airline could skimp on ff miles.

I have to wonder if this f/a has significant mental health problems, no longer able to control it or fearing failure on her next health exam. Perhaps too many stessful work shifts with bad co-workers and too many idiot customers, on top of her mental health just pushed her over the edge.
I am concerned that someone with a possible mental health condition and would do such an act as happened here will put passengers in danger, may be unable to do their job if a serious incident, and as we have seen with at least on pilot, cause the murder of many passengers and crew.

Given that the primary purpose of most of UA's "thru" flights is to conserve flight numbers, no. Even on a true thru at a hub you're going to have to deboard the plane so the cleaners can do their job. And in the cases of thru flights at out stations, usually there's such a long gap in the flight that it pretty much has to be a different plane or you're getting off anyway because the crew is getting off.

No, not really.. At UA at least. It's more a means of saving on flight numbers. Any thru passengers have to deplane anyway as the ground time between arrival and departure is often between one to two hours or more and there is a crew change and aircraft cleaning. Plus some flight #s are 'thru' LAX IAH SNA ore IAH DEN DFW etc.
