Ryanair Base 84: Prague With 2 Aircraft, 5 Routes

Wed Apr 06, 2016 7:06 pm

Ryanair have announced base number 84 in Prague with 2 based aircraft and a total of 5 routes from 30 October:

London STN: 2x daily
Brussels CRL: 9x weekly
Dublin: daily
Milan BGY: daily (new)
Rome CIA: daily (new)

Brussels seems to continue being a CRL based aircraft so there might be some capacity to launch some additional routes.

Meanwhile, Ryanair's planned Timisoara (Romania) base will be moved forward 2 months from October to September.

Interesting that they are all daily or more than daily services. They usually launch a bunch of routes with weekly frequencies.

Great news!

weekly frequencies.

Exceptionally rare to see weekly - i.e., 1x-weekly - frequencies. Often an absolute minimum of 2x weekly, and increasingly daily+ as they push into denser markets and more business-focused markets, albeit less in his announcement.

It is nice to see Ryanair setting a base in Prague.

Flying to PRG from Western Europe is usually way more expensive than doing it to comparable cities like Warsaw or Budapest due to the limited low-cost offer.

In terms of LCC (or hybrid) competition:

PRG-LTN: 8x weekly, W6;
PRG-STN: 7x weekly, EZY;
PRG-CRL: none;
PRG-BGY: 5x weekly, W6;
PRG-MXP: 13x weekly, EZY;
PRG-CIA: 3x weekly, W6;
PRG-FCO: 7x weekly, VY.

Only CRL has no direct or indirect (BRU) LCC competition. It is notable that W6 doesn't serve CRL from PRG.

For a Central European capital, Prague has always seemed a bit odd in the respect that there isn't really a dominant LCC, and one of the major market players is a fairly small carrier (Smartwings/Travel Service). The rest is fairly spread out between easyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair, Vueling and Wizz. There are some fairly large gaps in the network that OK has been filling (e.g. BHX-PRG), which was without service since the demise of Bmibaby.

In Warsaw and Budapest, you have Wizz and Ryanair as the undisputed market leaders, but it's not the case in Prague.

I think MAD or BCN could work well from PRG with Ryanair. FR started MAD-BTS not that long ago.

MAD has only Iberia and Czech, and BCN has Czech, Vueling and Smartwings.

That area (PRG/BUD/VIE) is very popular for Spanish tourists, and no doubt at least BCN will be popular with Czechs.

What is it meaning by based? Is that RON? I imagine the aircraft will rotate throughout the system.

Aircraft and crews will be stationed at PRG and they return to the base after each duty. The actual aircraft units will be rotated between bases now and again, e.g. for maintenance at one of FR's larger bases such as STN.

Ryanair, like most European LCCs, tends to stick to this rather simple pattern. There can be W patterns e.g. PRG-STN-DUB-STN-PRG but they're quite rare at FR (more common at easyJet).

In terms of dominance by seats at PRG in w/c 4th April 2016:

#1: OK with 18.7% of weekly seats
#2: U2 with 8.1%
#3: LH with 7.0%
#4: QS with 4.9%
#5: SU with 4.3%
#6: FR with 4.0%
#7: BA with 3.9%
#8: DY with 3.6%

W6 is clumped with 'other airlines' representing 45.5% of weekly seats.

Unsurprisingly, the picture changes radically for QS come summertime, e.g. w/c 22nd August 2016:

#1: QS with 23.3%
#2: OK with 17.0%
#3: U2 with 5.4%
#4: LH with 5.3%
#5: SU with 3.2%
#6=: BA with 2.9%
#6=: FR with 2.9%
#7: DY with 2.7%

Again, W6 clumped within the 'other airlines' with a combined 37.3%.

Quoting 32andBelow (Reply 8):

Ryanair work almost exclusively on an out-and-back model. Once an aircraft is "based" at an airport it will usually continue to fly in and out of the same airport until it is time to rotate it out for maintenance. Because they are a 100% O&D airline that doesn't facilitate connections it is very easy for them to maintain this simple operating model.

The main thing that makes it a base though is that it will be a crew domicile, their 84th crew base. Just as the aircraft go our and back to the same airport, so does the crew. This keeps costs down by meaning that they never schedule RONs, and therefore only pay for crew hotel nights during IRROPS. Ryanair decided that it was more cost effective to have 84 small crew bases than 5 or 6 large crew bases and RON hotel nights all over the system.

This approach works because their operating model is so simple. There is no way that a network carrier, with all the complexities that come with running a hub operation, could operate this way.

Indeed, a very comprehensive explanation. Most European LCCs and leisure carriers work this way, at least on short-haul services. Perhaps unique to Ryanair is that they don't hire crews for a fixed base, crews can express base preferences but ultimately the airline has the flexibility to move its crews across these 84 bases.

Wizz have cut back in PRG over the last few years because of fees. For some reason I think used to serve it. Ryanair also left and returned and given the route choices I suspect its purly profit and it would take lower fees to serve minor routes.

Interesting to see if Wizz could gett better terms now if they wanted to expand.

Crew are hired on Irish contracts, which permits pay to be determined at base level. As their website states "You can typically expect to earn approximately £900-£1,000/€1,000-€1,400 per month after tax in your first year depending on base location". I think the only exception is at Moroccan bases where crew are employed through a local employment agency due it being a non-EEA country.

Another thing is that Ryanair's salaries are based on local rates and living expenses, which are a lot cheaper in Eastern Europe than in North-Western European countries. With this they follow e.g. Wizzair, which only has bases in Eastern Europe, to take advantage of the lower salaries there.

Crews are being posted there (they can only voice a preference for a base, but can be moved anywhere the company needs them, with a resulting pay cut) and have the choice of either moving there or leaving the company.

I see, thanks for the information. I'm guessing in terms of cabin crew it's those on directly employed contracts that are employed on the UK contracts? The report that was recently published seemed keen on the idea that it was all Irish contracts, however UK employment law is also relatively favourable for the employer compared to say Denmark.

Prague airport gives good offers to all airlines but they are adamant that all airlines will be treated the same, so no one gets special treatment. Incentives are in place but all get the same.

Ryanair and their loud representative started Prague years ago and demanded special rates however PRG gave him none other than the standard offered to other airlines, so Ryanair cancelled Prague and swore they'll never fly to the Czech capital ever again.

Competition is a good thing and low cost is a great way to fly around bit PRG decided they will never allow the dominance or reliance on a single airline and spread the risk. Even though Czech airlines is pretty small at the moment but it was battling with big losses and when Malev folded hurting Budapest a lot, PRG decided to increase foreign airlines incase OK got in serious trouble. Czech airlines is now in the black but still tiny and a basket case.

We'll see Ryanair and what will they offer and also whether they won't get greedy again making demands.

I doubt it will have any impact on BTS. Bratislava and Prague are +300 km apart. Bratislava serves as "Vienna East".

The only issue with BTS would be if Ryanair starts flights from VIE.

This must be the 5th or 6th base Ryanair have opened up, in the last year or two, where WIzzair currently have an established base...

It is clear Ryanair are after WIzzair's blood, or atleast a slice of the Wizzair pie!

However Wizzair seem to continue to grow, and co-exisiting quite well against the mammouth competition or Europe's largest Low Cost Carrier.

I suspect the only way Ryanair would get rid of Wizzair would be to buy them. Wizz is an extremely lean carrier and knows its markets well, they're able to compete with Ryanair's £7.99/€9.99 fares in the event of competition. I've never seen any of the other LCCs in Europe go that low; Norwegian, easyJet and Vueling seem to manage around €19.99 as the absolute minimum.

Wizz has the second lowest costs in Europe after Ryanair, and their high density A321s are aimed at lowering their costs even further*.

See how long they will stay this time around. FR tries to switch to main airports, but with 5 routes this is just another base to add to their collection of bases.

It is not in anyone's (airport or passenger) interest to have a dominant LCC at a given airport. An example is BTS which found itself being a de facto hostage of Ryanair. Up until last year they had 8 years of continuous passenger losses, year after year yet unable to attract more competition.
