Wow! An 11% increase in international passengers with a 3% increase in flight frequencies. Since DL is still running an 333 to AMS daily it would seem that demand for seats to Europe are pretty strong. Condor's load factors make me wonder if LH would still be around were it not for the financial downturn.

Can anyone figure out how PenAir is doing with their Portland operations? If I'm doing the math right, they've got an average of less than 12 passengers per flight. Any idea if some of their routes are doing better than others?

I noticed again tonight (Aug 2) that Condor is operating 2x flights PDX-FRA.

Based on the flt#s, I assume it's making up for a mechanical delay here in PDX, but, it's also the second time I've seen it in the last 30 days or so.
First time, the planes were not more than 10 minutes separated, tonight it looks like they are on different tracks about an hour apart.

LH is definitely missing out in PDX, especially with Condor's impressive load factors. However, Condor does have interline with LH from FRA so its the next best thing. If Condor continues to see these very high 90s load factors I could see them expanding in PDX even more. Every flight they have had to PDX has been 99-98% full since they started service last year. DE went from 2x/week in summer 2015 to 4x/week this summer 2016. For season 2017 I see Condor will be starting PDX from the beginning of May with 3x/week service PDX-FRA...going to 4x/week service next summer again. You could be right, though there will be increased competition to Europe next summer as DL adds LHR. Not sure what Icelandair is planning for PDX next season, but they could increase frequency as well.

I think the problem is on the other end. Passengers largely prefer DCA, so I'm willing to bet that many passengers are more willing to do PDX-SEA-DCA than a nonstop PDX-BWI/IAD. And nobody can add more PDX-DCA right now (outside of flexing one of those few slots that can be). Is it possible to get numbers on a connecting route like that?

I thought WN had really moved away from a lot of their trans-con flights in the past few years, preferring to route people on two or three shorter flights.

There is really no point in a name change. I bet the vast majority of the few pax that fly them in Memphis, Houston, El Dorado, Harrison, or Hot Springs have any inclination as to where name came from, and probably don't care. At least they would still serve a seaport city in Houston lol.

Since new federal bill mandating TSA to operate at an airport if a party interested if they lost it very recently; wouldn't this make the TSA go into PDT if PenAir bid and won the award there? I love how some of the news stories on this state it as if the Pendleton council vote is the decision to get Boutique in. Missing the part about the DOT having final say.

I don't recall the exact start / end dates, but PDX-BWI ran until last weekend or the weekend before, I believe. Surprising that they didn't run until at least Labor Day, but it did run seasonally for at least part of the summertime.

Yes, I think Washington area is underserved, but I'd love for a year-round nonstop PDX-PHL, preferably on AS, preferably daytime PDX-PHL, evening PHL-PDX vs. the redeye PDX-PHL that AA offers seasonally. I'm encouraged by upcoming addition of PDX-EWR.

Did Frontier cancel the Portland-Cleveland nonstop?

Maybe this has been discussed, but where do you all prefer to spot at pdx? The garage is mediocre at best and the two turn offs on marine drive have 'no parking' signs, I've been ushered along a couple times by the cops. The cell phone waiting area is passable for landings.

PDX seems to have really gone in a spotter-unfriendly direction in thr past ten years or so, then again, so has SEA which is probably even worse for spotting.
The best places now at PDX are probably the bar on Marine Drive at the western end, and one of the parking lots off 82nd on the other end. However, these are only good for takeoffs and landings, you won't get much else. And the traffic has to be flowing in the right direction.

If the planes are landing 28R/28L, then you can do some decent spotting from the Target parking lot. Plus there's a Wendy's there so you can grab a Baconator while you watch the birds on final approach.

One of the cops was pretty cool and said there was a spot near the airport fire station that didn't have any no parking signs and would be okay. It was pretty late at that time and most arrivals were done with so I never really checked it out. I remember 15 years ago there were a few more turn outs on marine drive where you could stop without getting ushered along.

Terminal E balancing extension update:

CC-E will be extended to the east about 750 feet, adding gate capacity of 6 additional gates here at PDX. At this time there aren't any good rendering to share.........

So Menzies is laying off permanently 180+ jobs at PDX by end of October. They do underwing for AS here at PDX, correct? Is this a sign of AS taking their ramp back or just a market adjustment?

For what it's worth, I caught a couple of commercials during the Olympics broadcast on MFR TV over the weekend (visiting Jacksonville for the Britt music festival) by LMT Klamath Falls Airport featuring the pending PenAir/KS PDX service. Looked like possibly a co-op LMT/KS production, and included the AS Mileage Plan connection with KS as well. Good to see some support for that new service. I hope it does well, especially since I read about the economic decline in K Falls over the weekend as well. KS does seem to be pretty good at community exposure: they sponsor events here in CEC and advertise locally on radio and in the paper. We only get Eureka (ACV) television here, but since I don't watch anything but PBS except Olympics, NFL and some award shows, I haven't seen if they are advertising the ACV-PDX service there.

Meanwhile, after a record zero flight cancellations in CEC for July (per the local paper), they've had sucky performance with lots of delays and cancellations in the last couple of weeks. Anybody have info on what's going on? I fear they are spreading themselves too thin with the PDX expansion and now the DEN roll-out. I have my sister-in-law booked with them in a few weeks, and they've been misconnecting to the last PDX-SMF flight of the day a lot.

If you like to watch arrivals like me, you can't beat the parking garage top deck if they're landing on 10L or 28L. For 10R, I don't know. For 28R, a room at the Hampton Inn facing the runway is great!! Other than that, the Sheraton/Hampton parking lots work for 28R if the shrubbery isn't in the way. I used to park on Marine Drive next to the hot dog wagon! Anybody remember that?

If they're having delays now, the winter months could be problematic for them. How well does a SF3 do in fog, PDX south wind events (crosswind runway), and strong east winds? I'm sure they'd cancel if there's snow or ice...as would most airlines depending upon the severity. Of course they are used to flying in Alaska!

With the PDX expansion, ops at BOS and now DEN, all in addition to Alaska flying, are Penair going to need to pick up some more frames?

Checking the original Frontier press release from January, it appears they have pulled the plug on the PDX-CLE nonstop. Although the press release didn't mention seasonal, the other new routes that began in April including to LAX and SFO continue through October.

International passenger numbers are up 17.3%. Wow.

At this current growth rate, PDX will easily break 18 million passengers for the entire year 2016.

With PDX adding new nonstops on AS to EWR, MCO, SUN, DL adding a nonstop to LHR, PenAir adding a nonstop to Klamath Falls, the growth at PDX will only continue.

Interesting that AS/QX traffic declined from last July.

It would't surprise me to see HA restart PDX-OGG as soon as they receive their A321neos in 2017.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Condor expand even more at PDX. Condor has been a huge success at PDX with high load factors for every month of service since the start of their PDX service. Condor doubled their PDX service this summer 2016 to 4x/week and still managed to obtain a 92% LF. I could see Condor eventually going year round to FRA from PDX by flying 2x/week in the Winter and adding a 2x/week Summer PDX-Munich service on the days that their PDX-Frankfurt service does not operate(as they will be doing from SEA next year Summer 2017).

I can also see British Airways adding PDX service if this growth continues.

Delta adding a PDX-CDG flight is probably not too far away either (I am surprised they added PDX-LHR before CDG)>

And AA adding a much needed nonstop PDX-Miami flight is probably right around the corner.

Actually, overall I believe AS/QX is still up...the new AS/QX E175 operations from PDX are operated by "skywest airlines." SkyWest was up 63%.
