Garuda Converts A333 Order To 14 A339s

Tue Apr 19, 2016 8:36 pm

Did not see this posted. Brithish PM David Cameron with the Indonesian President (forgot his name) announced that Garuda will upgrade a previously placed order of 7 A333s to 14 newer 339s. Did GA make the correct choice?

This order (well, an 'undisclosed' customer placed an order for 14 x A339s) was booked by Airbus in January. Airbus also shows a 7 frame cancellation for A330-300s as well.

it's really hard to "go wrong" with new generation technology that keeps a lot of commonality with the existing fleet ... unless they overpaid. Maybe Airbus even offered $0 up-sell cost to GA to get them to switch - clearing the 333 backlog for those who really want it ASAP while shoring up the somewhat-thin order book of the NEO family.

I think so. Several factors may have come into it, including the fact that converting to the A339 will push deliveries down the road; GA's acquisitions have come in for criticism in recent years, with orders for 787s and A350s. Could it afford to take the A330s if it were to take delivery now?

The A339 would suit GA well, in that it's range from either DPS or CGK would cover pretty much all of Asia and Australia. No doubt it will also allow GA to replace some of its first batch of A330s, which date back to the mid 1990s. The A339 will also give a significant cost/fuel economy advantage over the older A330s.

Yup agree. Basically the classic business case for building the A330neo in the first place.

Crazy speculation, on what basis do you say that.

Well, not crazy but certainly not completely true either.
The A339 is around 12% more expensive than A333 at catalog price. This gap is more than Airbus net margin on the frame, and even with benefits from prod rationalization, it doesn't come right I guess (unless GA didn't negotiate that much for the initial A333, in that case it's possible).

Yes. They wanted to defer some deliveries, thanks to the previous management's "mad buying spree"... The current focus is to optimize with what they got and make GA leaner before expanding again...

I do totally agree with that. A339 has a great potential in terms of operations. I'm still surprised to see that orders are not that big for the moment. IMO it's the best aircraft in both Airbus and Boeing catalog
