Qatar Airways Start Serving Windhoek

Thu Apr 21, 2016 11:05 am

From 28th September

QR1373 DOH-WDH 0230 1040
QR1374 WDH-DOH 1325 2310

Not sure of the frequency or the aircraft type.

This is big for Namibia. At present Air Namibia and Condor fly WDH-FRA. That's all there is between Namibia and Europe.

Otherwise, we fly to JNB on Air Namibia or SAA or Comair (BA) and then onwards.

I wonder if it'll work out?

Its a 787... not a daily if I recall.

Now, QR could do a real coup and tag it to GBE for greater chance of success.

Still remarkable that NAM govt finally managed to convince a non-German carrier to start longhaul ops to WDH. At least from a passenger's perspective, a great move

Isn't the market awfully small to support this?

Tourism, at least ex-Germany, is quite sizable and there certainly is a lot of potential to grow tourism in this beautiful country. But you're right, it's a nation of roughly 2 mn being connected to another nation of roughly 2 mn

I thought BA could have 2 weekly flights from Gatwick as it is becoming a popular destinations. It would fit well with BA' LGW destinations.
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

It could certainly give tourism in Namibia a boost. It's a fantastic country, beautiful, very nice people, pretty good infrastructure, and safe. I think it's a pretty well run country.

At the moment, yes perhaps. But, as said, it could give tourism another boost, it is already growing. When I visited the country last year I wondered which airline would give WDH a go first. Either QR or TK were my thoughts then. I don't think WDH can support more than two foreign wide body services though.

It's arguably the safest and one of the most modern and beautiful countries in Africa. A great place to visit, and hopefully this link helps expose it to more people.

I'm surprised that it took the ME3 so long to discover Namibia considering how many markets they already serve. From a German perspective, Namibia seems to be one of the most desired destinations in Africa. I wasn't aware that international demand was not that high for WDH flights. We'll see if QR can boost that. How long will EK wait to start DXB-WDH or TK IST-WDH?

When SW operated LHR-WDH it was very unprofitable and was dropped.

The Europe-Namibia market has been almost totally Germany-origin for historical reasons.

I know about the historic ties between Germany and Namibia although I doubt that most tourists travelling there are that aware of the history. Still, Namibia's tourism industry for sure built on the existing connection to Germany and I assume that quite a few of the German-Namibians work in the tourism industry there.

I've been to WDH and it's a pleasant city. However, with such a small population I really wonder if QR (or TK/EK/EY) can make it work.

LH used to fly to WDH with A340, 3x weekly I believe. I think there was continuing service to HRE. Even they couldn't make the route work. DE is better suited for the route, in my opinion.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!

I fully agree. I've been there twice on vacation with my family. A great country. I always went through JNB, with SA. A more direct link will be very welcome.

The tourism market to Namibia is pretty massive.

WDH makes a lot more sense from LHR, where it would have connectivity.

1) WDH is Namibia's major airport. Walvis Bay is strictly short, local stuff for international.

2) Ex-WDH traffic isn't what they are interested in. Single connects from most of the world are.

No, it's actually tiny. Germany, it's largest source of tourists outside of Africa, doesn't even send 100,000 tourists annually to Namibia. It's next two largest sources, the U.S. and the UK, send less than one-fourth of that.

Thank you for proving my point- an excellent example on how a route can quickly fail!!!

What's more, apart from German tourists relatively few people visit Namibia in isolation. It is normally done as part of a larger tour involving South Africa, Botswana and Zambia/Zimbabwe. Given their geographical location, Namibia and Botswana get relatively few tourists flying into their country, but rather crossing overland.
