That's pretty exotic news for BHX and yet more growth by HNA.
I laughed at the marketing straight from the Ryanair playbook: "Hangzhou Airport near Shanghai" as it is 100 miles from Hangzhou airport to Shanghai (so basically the same as describing BHX as "London Birmingham Airport").
As a city Hangzhou has enough going for it (business and tourist) without needing the "near Shanghai" added.

This is the same crowd that recently started flights HGH-MAD. Those are catered to Chinese tourists.
BHX is a good gateaway for Chinese tourists in the UK since it is not too far from London and quite central to England.

and BHX is convenient for Bicester Village - straight down the M40. Why do I mention that? "the [Bicester Village] outlet mall now attracts 6.3 million shoppers a year, making it second only to Buckingham Palace for tourists from China"

THERE IS MORE TO BRITAIN THAN JUST F'ING LONDON. If they want to go to London, get them on the planes to London.
Personally, I would say BHX has completely underachieved with this route announcement. They were quoted yesterday as saying 150,000 passengers from their catchment are go to China. Yet we are meant to be enthused a 2 weekly summer seasonal services that's zero to go with business links.
In the meantime, a proper airport with roughly the same amount of travellers to China has a year-round 4 weekly A330s to PEK starting in June with an upgauge in aircraft having already been announced well in advance of the 1st service plus the expectation that Air China will finally announce a 4 weekly PVG service mid-summer. That is what BHX should be aiming for, not a quasi-scheduled service.

David you are better than this! This is good news for BHX the start of scheduled direct service to China is nothing to be sniffed at, especially when you say MAN is a proper airport. We both know that up to recently MAN has been run as a Car Park with an airport attached. Better not mention the pretty terminal updates, when you are at max capacity. Give BHX it's 15 mins, am sure next week will be MAN's turn.

I am not familiar with the circuits for Chinese tourists in the UK, but I can well assume that they include London, outlets (like gct64 has mentioned), Oxford/Cambridge (Chinese obsessed with higher education) and maybe some "cute" town like Bath or Coventry.
Chinese are bused all around the place, so where they arrive is quite irrelevant. For the average "tour" tourist, it is probably better BHX than LHR: smaller airport (easier to navigate), quicker access to the bus, lower fees (more competitive price). This is the same reason why Liege in Belgium has had those kind of flights to China for a while. Chinese land in Liege (tiny airport), take the bus and hop... next stop Brussels, Luxembourg or Amsterdam. They don't even visit Liege... they could not care less.
Not trying to be offensive, but 99.99% of Chinese tourists will not give a damn about Birmingham; they probably will not even know what Birmingham is even if they land at BHX. They are not looking for council estates and soviet-style city centers when travelling to Europe.

Thats great news for BHX, if the flights are successful is there a possibility of the service going year round?
Im not sure if you've been to Birmingham, but its actually a beautiful city. While in London last summer, we went up to visit Cadbury world and decided to spend the night in Birmingham. We were so pleasantly surprised by what the city had to offer that we extended our stay another 3 nights.

Birmingham is a far cry from its industrial 1970s ugly period its now a modern 24 hour city with a wealth of things to do take a look yourself

It would be nice if we could come together on this forum and appreciate advances in the air transport industry, without all this fan-boy ism. But that's A Net for you.
What is your idea of a proper airport? (although I think we know) BHX serves over 10 million passengers a year.

Don't knock a place until you've been there. A lot of people love to make jokes about Birmingham (even I do it sometimes), but having moved to the city from further north four years ago it's honestly about the same as other large UK cities that attract tourists like Manchester or Liverpool. People picture it prior to a lot of restoration and development that's taken place in the last 20-30 years. It's never going to be Paris or Rome for sure, but it doesn't claim to be either. I regularly see tourists from the Far East, there's also a lot of Chinese students in the city as it has the largest student population after London. I think they particularly like the high end shopping.
My favourite spots are the Mailbox, Brindley Place, University, Chamberlain Square and Cadbury's Bournville Village. Nothing Soviet about any of those places. Perfect a day and then move on to Stratford-upon-Avon.
