I beleive so.

They would probably want some of the new routes to be year round before committing the investment. If you have 6+ Large aircraft based somewhere it makes sense to have the requisite facilities to support them.

2017 looks to be another stellar year for long-haul. MRU still needs to be officially announced. Shanghai was quasi-outed in a recent conference for a March start with Beijing being daily. Muscat starting up BOS and SFO by VS, SFO by MT. Plus one or two others. One does have to ask the question of how relevant LHR ought to be for Northwest England?

easyJet to base an extra aircraft at Manchester in S17, therefore increasing the number of based aircraft to 12. Hopefully we will hear of some new route announcements in due course! Any viable guesses? They are still some gaps that could be served IMO like Faro, Lanzarote, Naples & Rome.

Gaps for EZY but hardly for MAN. FAO and ACE especially. ZAG has been mentioned on another forum. I would like to see some more cities not currently served rather than the normal sun destinations

In addition to these, a number of similarly unique routes are in the pipeline for launch over the next 2 years or so including Bangkok, Addis Abba, San Diego, Tampa and Detroit (as well as a host of Chinese cities).

MAN is also the only airport outside LHR to have a presence from all of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar.

The major geographical gaps in the network are South/Central America and the northern Far East Asia (e.g. Japan and Korea). Aside from this, the major issue is the seasonal nature of demand. It is slowly starting to even out but there is a long way for it to even out.

Even at LHR south america isnt that well served with only a handful of destinations

Agreed - i don't see South American routes at MAN any time soon.

Can I ask, what is the point of this Iraqi Airways flight? With a route like that via 2-3 airports, is there really going to be enough demand?

The route is primarily to serve Sulamanyah, but the aircraft needs to be back in Baghdad to rotate in the fleet, so, it's sold as a through flight.

Malmo is a security stop inbound.

I believe it was an Iraqi Airways flight that brought back the body of a former Marine who died fighting for the Kurds. Loads of Kurds showed up at the airport:

My Dad's worked with a lot of Iraqis here in Manchester as well so I wouldn't snub ones nose at the idea of their being a market for these flights even if it is a little niche.

There is a market for Iraq flights, Iraqi themselves did run 2 weekly (one to Erbil and one to Sulamanyah) a year or so ago but pulled the flights when their B737's were banned from European airspace.

Now their A320's are permitted, we are seeing this weekly flight.

Erbil was the other destination used to serve from MAN, so, if/when the situation stabilises in the Erbil area, may see that route return.

What is the word on the DTW-MAN flight that DL/VS was suppose to add.

It got postponed again due to 'Brexit'. May have been a bit premature given the pound is strengthening up again, but who knows.

It did make it to the VS destination page, but, that's it.

Did we ever get to the stage where we knew if it was to be operated on DL or VS metal?

Quick note of a MAN website problem, for anyone looking to pre-book the T1 or T3 multi-storey carparks.

At the moment these will only show up on searches for bookings of less than 12 days' duration; which is a bit of a nightmare for families looking to book parking for a fortnight holiday.

T2 multi-storey shows up fine, as do the T1 Long Stay & Meet & Greet.

IT have been notified, as of Thursday afternoon, but no sign of the glitch having been put right yet.

DL would probably have operated the DTW route- think they have the more appropriate equipment (757) for launching it with potential for it to go to 767 should demand warrant it (either passenger or cargo)

MAN-IAD on UA not returning for next summer. No news yet on whether EWR will see a schedule increase to compensate?

FR adding a 3rd weekly CHQ to their schedule next summer.

MT adding new SPU and AGP summer '17 routes.

BE running weekly charters to BCN next summer on behalf of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

TP doubling frequency on MAN-LIS from Daily to Double Daily for summer '17.

KU apparently intend to start flying to MAN. Did not see that coming, another Middle Eastern carrier. Good to see.

the Kuwait flights are apparently due to a BAE cargo contract but also some pax demand.

(Of course, this is speculation at this stage, we don't want a certain poster to think we are getting big for our boots again)

One piece of confirmed news is Cathay Pacific increasing to 5 weekly and use A350-900 from 2nd June.

3 new routes from Easyjet announced today.

2 weekly each to Preveza, Dubrovnik and Granada. There seems to be some confusion though, as MAN and press stating a May start, but Easyjet website only showing from July.

Forecasting a 22% rise in passenger numbers for the festive period:

"The airport expects a record Christmas, handling 640,125 travellers over the peak period between December 23 and January 2."

Is it a glitch? The multi-story car parks are supposed to be short-stay only which would explain not being able to book for two weeks!

Any update/rumors on DTW? Or do we have to see how connections via JFK happen before a decision is made?

Lufthansa running an A380 through Manchester tomorrow morning.

LH9925 routing IAH-MAN-FRA and will be D-AIMI. It went tech in IAH a few days ago and now cannot reach FRA on the crew it has, so, stopping at MAN for a fresh crew.
