Manchester Statistics - February 2017 (Part 1)

Please remember that 2016 was a leap-year and therefore a small reduction in passengers may be expected due to the loss of 1 day in comparative figures.

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

St Etienne - 2,402 passengers. This was a 'one-off' for football supports.

In the absence of much data for this section I have provided a review of the performance for the domestic destinations served from Manchester, comparing February 2017 with the same month in 2016:

Aberdeen - +1.0114%
Belfast City - +3.9198%
Belfast International - +0.7926%
Bournemouth - -94.035%
Edinburgh - -24.748%
Exeter - -1.756%
Glasgow - -35.309%
Guernsey - +2.5224%
Heathrow - -4.6282%
Inverness - -5.5044%
Isle of Man - +2.0116%
Jersey - -51.932%
Newquay - -9.8817%
Norwich - +5.3077%
Southampton - +32.934%

Wow, MAN really is ramping up the services! But why such horrible times on the MAN-KBP leg? Why is there a 3.5 hour gap from the incoming aircraft? Could they not depart 12am for example?

12am is midday, surely you meant 12pm or 00.00 or 23.59 even as in midnight.

Even if Ukraine did offer a midnight departure from Manchester it would still allow a 'decent enough' arrival in Kiev at 05.25

Cunard,

I think it is you that has this the wrong way around.

I was always told 12am was midnight. Once it hits midday (ei 12:00:01) then you go into afternoon territory and 00:00:01 is morning, hence 12pm is 1200 and 12am is 0000

Long time lurker and first time poster. Life long resident near/around MAN.

Fantastic to see these China routes opening up. Any rumours on Japan routes in the near or more-distant future? No research behind what the demand may be but interested nontheless.

Didn't think think so, but would be a great new market to open up when it's commercially viable.

Japan is a maybe for the future. ANA people have visited in the past so it's maybe on their radar for the future.

Taiwan is another interesting possibility as there are apparently some traffic rights that specifically relate to Manchester, and China Airlines Cargo have been here in the past. EVA is the one that gets mentioned though.

I'd like to see Malaysian come back one day, although that would be a long way off. One possibility is the rapidly expanding Vietnam Airlines, who are developing into quite the regional and longhaul powerhouse of the area. Wishful thinking but they have a young fleet and the will to develop their network. Might they take a look?

Don't think Vietnam airlines would come to Manchester.Dont see any real big demand and any one who does come/go to Vietnam to Manchester already goes through the MEB3.

JAL reps make many visits to Manchester every year but never amounts to anything.

Thomson have started a Vietnam route from Gatwick, so like Phuket maybe one for the future.

In terms of Far East, Korea could be one to put a pin in. A fair amount of cargo heads on trucks and connections from Manchester, as do a large number of connecting pax. Add in tours from Korean Airs charter arm, and the route could just be viable on a 2-3 weekly A332.

I did have Seoul in my mind too as future possibilities.

I wonder what the reasons are for unfruitful vists from the reps. Maybe more of a reconissence trip for them.

Didn't know Malaysia used to fly from MAN. South America would be wishful thinking too longer term.

Malaysian operated 4 weekly 772s with no F class but decided to replace them with 744s with F class. Would have been preferable for them to do a steady increase in frequency, The CAA's passenger stats from when they operated:

Think we have to rid ourselves of the idea that the ME3 is hindering airlines at MAN or stopping airlines starting services. Just need to remember that MAN-somewhere-HKG had EK as the market leader but in comes CX with non-stop services and EK is still nurdling 85% to 90% loads whilst CX is going just over 90% loads with boosts in frequency in June then December to come. It's just the mindset that airlines need to adjust.

In terms of JAL multiple visits, it may seem like it's been fruitless, but a route between MAN and TYO is by the very definition of a 'long and thin' route, so, will take a lot of persuasion that a route is viable.

I believe there are enough passengers for such a route, the problem is, these passengers are already well catered for, not just by the MEB3, but also Finnair in particular. The latter does a roaring trade in MAN-HEL-Japan, even to the point it will be 10 weekly A319 and 4 weekly E190 this winter.

While there are such 'quick' and easy routings via other points already, Japan will be a very tough ask from Manchester. Just needs a bit of bravery to go against those connections. It's been done before, with the likes of San Diego, Boston and Dusseldorf, so, any things possible.

I'm not saying that the ME3 is 'hindering airlines at man or stopping airlines starting service'.I was saying I don't think Vietnam airlines would come to Manchester because I don't see direct demand to keep a route like HAN or SGN to MAN.Then I went to say 'any one who does come/go to Vietnam to Manchester already goes through the MEB3' I'm saying because the tiny bit of traffic between Manchester and Vietnam does go through ME3 I'm not saying the ME3 is stopping or preventing airlines to come to Manchester because that's just stupid.I also didn't say about CX or Emirates load factors.

I have not seen this reported elsewhere on Airliners.net and feel that it is a major step in the development of Manchester. The information is taken from the NATS AIP Supplements pages.

The fact that the work covers a period of 7 years shows the scale of the transformation tobe undertaken.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME - MAJOR CONSTRUCTION WORKS COMMENCING 2017

1 Introduction
1.1 Major work will take place between Spring 2017 and early 2024 to construct an extension to Terminal Two, with a large multistorey car park, piers, associated aprons and taxilanes. There will be major works ongoing in landside areas, with tower and mobile cranes operating. There will also be multiple phases of airside works, involving stand and taxiway closures, taxiway diversions, reconfigurations and re-designations. From Summer 2018 onwards additional aprons and taxi lanes will be introduced.
1.2 AIP Supplements will advise of works and operational impact phase by phase, and aerodrome charts and textual data progressively updated.

2 Programme – Phase 1 Landside Works
2.1 18 April to 31 October 2017; Hours of operation, H24.

3 Operational Implications (Phase 1 Landside Works)
3.1 Site boundary fence erected at the northwest end of Taxiways Delta and November;
3.2 Stands 74, 86L, 219, and 249 withdrawn from use;
3.3 Stand 245 reinstated.

Do we know how many aeroplane parking places will be lost during this loooonnnnggg upgrade? Do we know what the total gain/loss of aircraft parking places will be achieved by 2024. Will growth be restricted during the upgrade? Are they still planning to keep Pier C and put it back to back with a new pier, thus wasting the opportunity of using them for parking planes on both sides? Why have they started this Update so late and at a time the airport is running over capacity on it's present Terminals?

I remember reading on Wiki that part of the airports development plans from a few years ago entail bulldozing the current area of the Runway Visitor Park. Is this still on the cards and has any replacement area been mooted?

Does anyone know who's flying on the JED-MAN-JED route? I've always been intrigued about this one. I appreciate the Mecca connection but not sure that would fill a 77W 5 days a week.

Export Britain quotes this:
"Opportunities for UK businesses

Key sectors include transport, infrastructure, health, education, tech and retail. Saudi Arabia is more open to private sector participation and has a great interest in UK experience of PPP, facilities management and SME development. "

Add in pharmaceutical and defence related work and you can see the pointy end of the plane getting filled. Throw in growing tourism and you get an even fuller plane. Then Hadj and Umrah pilgrammages will account for a fair proportion.

Suppose if you get a reasonable load factor in Y and fill J, you're on the way then.

Saudi currently deploy a 789 and will also operate to Riyadh in a short high summer season giving a daily Saudi flight

Carries BAE engineers and parts/spares for tanks, Tornadoes and such plus medical supplies (All high value).

Plus numerous Umra pilgrims.

In reverse an ever increasing number of Saudis arrive for things such as sport events and various islamic clerics.

Saudi is also active in the UK - Pakistan market

Some winter flight news:

Air Transat will increase from 1 to 2 weekly on Toronto for the winter season. Both flights will use the A310, and while it's only a small increase, it's interesting after years of stagnation, this market is now showing growth in the face of reductions to USA flying ex-MAN.

--------------------------

Austrian Airlines will convert its Saturday's only charter from Innsbruck to MAN into a scheduled flight. In the process, it has also added a 2nd flight on Sunday's from 7th January. A321 used on the Sat flight, A320 on Sunday's.

---------------------

A new virtual airline called Powdair Ski will launch a 2 weekly flight between Manchester and Sion, Switzerland. Flights will use either a Trade Air F100 or Germania A319, but details are yet to be confirmed.

----------------------------

Monarch have converted the summer routes of Zagreb, Porto and Stockholm to year round flights. All 3 routes will run at 2 weekly.

--------------------------

After any years of no winter service to the island, both Easyjet and Ryanair will run 2 weekly flights each to Palma. Ryanair did offer Palma last winter for the first time.

--------------------------

Not sure if it's been covered but amongst many increases, Jet2 will add Manchester-Verona 2 weekly next May, as well as increase Palma to 4 daily on Sat/Sun and add a 3rd weekly Almeria (the latter is a new route this summer).

Not sure if we are allowed to link to other forums (it isn't an aviation specific forum but an architecture one instead), but, updates are being complied here:

The reason I put VN up as a possible is that Vietnam is growing their beaches offering as well as setting themselves up as a better-run regional powerhouse. They have the 789 and A350 starting flights, and have turned over some of their older leased aircraft like the 772ER. We even got one at MAN for a repaint into Austrian colours.

So Vietnam is a possible vacation destination, as well as a connection hub. Thats how Emirates got started after all. The management of VN is outward looking and has started building a route network across the globe, and if rights are easy to obtain why not set themselves up as a newer, cheaper version of SQ and MH with Manchester flights?

One destination that gets a lot of attention (unfortunately once for the wrong reason when Gary Glitter got nicked for kiddy fiddling) is Vung Tau. It's becoming really popular with longhaul tourists.

VN would be an interesting one, but I would expect other Far East carriers to open up BKK, KUL and TYO before VN. Best chance would be as a transit flight to JFK similar to SQ's service to IAH. Creative use of USPC might be the way forward for MAN.

One of the most interesting stats above for me is the Goa decrease. Why and why is it not back to that level?

I noticed EK022 has been operated by the B777-300ER the past few days, anyone know when it switched back/if it will go back to A380 services?

It's a more quiet period this time of year so they may use this time to downgauge and do A380 maintenance. Loads are lower throughout May/June time. A few years back I remember the old A330's subbing in on many occasions whilst the A380's were under checks.

The A380 on the morning EK21/22 will return on 22nd June.

In other news...

Icelandair will use the B767-300 on various dates from February 9th, nice to see another widebody option intra-Europe.

-----------------

Hainan will use the B787-9 on Mondays and Wednesday's from 3rd July. Good chance to see the Kung Fu Panda schemes.
