It's a seasonal service May or June to October.I think it's always been that way.

It's become one of those seasonal routes, along with JFK.

The only all year route with AA is Philadelphia (unless things change).

Personally (from the other side of the Atlantic) I'd go with Aer Lingus via Dublin, but if you're tied to AA then the first options are via LHR or PHL.

Virgin don't fly to ORD from Manchester and never did.

Updates:

The Summer BA Cityflyer base will be extended into the winter, with a new 2 weekly route to Chambery as well as the weekly London City. E190 to be based.

Malaysian Airlines to run an A380 charter to/from Hong Kong.

MH8173 HKG 0250 MAN 0805 23/7/2017
MH8174 MAN 1045 KUL 0700+1 23/7/2017

A380 operates.

-------------------

Thomson will operate a new Sunday flight to Podgoricia from May 20th 2018. This will be Manchester's 2nd route to Montenegro with Easyjet serving Tivat.

---------------

Easyjet will launch a new route to Agadir in November, flight will be 2 weekly on Wed/Sat. Other routes also expected.

----------------

Ukraine International look to be on track to start a new PS115/116 flight to Kiev starting 28th. Will be 4 weekly Mon/Tue/Fri/Sat with B737.

----------------

Kuwait Airways has stated intentions to start a Manchester route this year. Local media is reporting B77W. They also intend to start either Washington or Chicago from Kuwait, but, with no rights to fly non stop and limited resources, the bets are on for this being a KWI-MAN-ORD/IADvv flight.

-----------

The new Terminal 2 redevelopment is now under way, details are available on request, but, won't take the time to post unless there are interested parties.

Thanks for this. I really enjoy following this threat living 20 minutes from MAN.

I will try and get to the viewing park for MH A380, would love to see it at MAN.

KAC will indeed operate to MAN later this year using a 77W + A332, As i mentioned earlier on another thread Washington route is seriously being considered as there is demand by Kuwaiti students and their family's, TSA Will audit KWI again later this year and i expect things to be back to normal as security measures has been beefed up there.

Does anybody have info on PAX final destination on flights and airlines? This may be unrealistic to ask for, but I'm curious how Japan, S Korea and other areas of mainland China (apart from Beijing) are being served for anybody living north of Birmingham. How much goes via HKG with CX? I still (naively maybe) believe there is demand for a direct to Tokyo ;)

I'd love to see JAL/ANA 788s flying over my house ;) However I am unsure there is enough demand, EK, QR, CX, EY, SQ, BA, KLM, AF cover the demand that there is. However id have said the same about CX before they started.

There are certainly lots of good "one stop" MAN-TYO options through Europe the Middle East and Far East. For sure the airport will have lots of data on the numbers and types of passengers taking this option.

They'll know the numbers, but that is no guarantee of a route. Just look at BKK.

What they won't know is how many passengers would find it attractive to transfer through MAN on such a service. Either from the rest of the UK, RoI, or elsewhere.

I understand the airport are seeing surprisingly high amounts of transfer traffic for some of the more unusual routes. MCO is a given, but SFO and IAH are attracting decent transfers. It's not just short haul to long haul transfers. Some are long haul to long haul. I'm not sure I understand why it's happening but that's not important.

The point is that a route to TYO may attract a market that even MAN don't yet know about, and such a route will depend on the passenger type rather than passenger volume. If both fall into place, who knows.

Tokyo is a route well served by others, including the "high speed" route MAN-HEL-NRT on Finnair. AY advertise it as such, a faster connection on the more northern routing that saves time over others.

I think while Tokyo would be a great route, for me, Seoul could be a better route, and here's why.

-passengers. There seems to be a growing number of passengers using various points to get to Manchester, and seems a predominantly inbound market. Universities seems to be the main traffic but it's definately growing. Yes, there are connection points to get between MAN-ICN, but, that was said about Hong Kong, and now Cathay is thriving with soon daily flights, but hasn't abated the Middle eastern carriers, in fact, they see, to be stronger than ever despite the growing Far East links.

-Hanjin Travel. Currently this company is running 3 charter flights into Glasgow for tour groups. With the Lakes, North Wales, Peaks, Pennines, Liverpool and Chester on our doorstep, I refuse to believe a small block booking of seats on any scheduled flights couldn't be well utilised. With connections via Flybe/Loganair, they could even market a quick connection up to the Highlands and Islands, as well as Cornwall and airplane. The possibilities are huge.

-Cargo. There is a lot of cargo that heads via various points from MAN-ICN, so this could help bolster the routes finances. Seems to be a lot of tech inbound, with engineering and plastics/PVC related stuff outbound.

3 weekly A332/B772 could be a good start in my opinion.

Hi Monty - that is good to hear.

Do you have any indication of the anticipated frequency?

Also, is the plan to serve Washington via Manchester, at least while KU cannot serve non-stop?

Cheers!

It would be interesting that they picked Guangzhou and it would be Hainan first LH route from the airport.

Hello, at the beginning flights Washington or Chicago will be via Man due to security reasons, A reliable KAC source told me 3 flight a week.

Cheers.

Internal info at the moment. They wanted to fly MAN-PVG but Air China will not relinquish the rights to the route.

Guangzhou is a great airport to pick, huge hub and great cargo airport, near Hong Kong too which is really going great from Manchester.

Hi Monty - thanks for that.

Is the plan to go 3x weekly KWI-MAN-IAD/ORD and then retain KWI-MAN at 3x weekly when it is decoupled?

Correct IAD/ORD will be operated by 77W via MAN, KWI MAN will be 3x weekly served by 77W and A332, my friend told me as well 7 A320's will get the new livery shortly, Last A340 leaving the fleet next week, 2 772 and 1 744 scheduled to retire next August.

Do we have an indication as to when this route will start? It seems to me that as they haven't yet decided whether to serve Chicago or Washington, the route is still a long way off, as they are clearly no where near finalising the route if they don't even know where to serve?

So, just to clarify for my own info, expecting KWI-MAN-IAD/ORD-MAN-KWI this September, then drop the MAN-IAD/ORD-MAN sector for its own KWI-MAN-KWI flight the following August.

The next question, I hear that the KU117 may move to MAN in November, is this true. Would make sense to have the USA flights through one airport, one team of staff etc?

A fabulous set of results from MAG released today
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/how-manchester-council-spend-50m-13321069

Pre-tax profits for the year were up 8% to £343m ($442m) with £91m in dividend payout to the local councils.

June passengers numbers were up 9% to 2.75 million and the moving annual total is now more than 27 million. Cargo almost hit 11,000 tonnes for the month.

A great set of numbers indeed.

It proves the demand for both short and long haul flights in the North West and surrounding catchment area when this level of growth can be achieved with comparatively poor facilities for customers.

Emirates codeshares in several BE flights to provide added connections.

The transfer centre at Manchester is becoming quite busy, and like a lot of the airport, is becoming too busy for the purpose it was originally intended for. The MAN-TP can't be finished quickly enough!
