NWA.com No Longer Redirects To Delta.com

Wed Apr 27, 2016 8:28 pm

Out of nostalgia, over the last few years I've occasionally typed NWA.com into my browser when looking for Delta information. Until now, the URL has always redirected immediately to Delta.com--but now it does not. Any word on why Delta has stopped this?

Probably some move around of the website and lack of forwarder/redirection. IMHO it's been long enough for that. I can't imagine there is a loss of sale due to NWA not redirecting at this point. If there are lost sales, it's probably not worth the extra QA and DNS registrations online.

Oddly, SkyBonus (the business program) still puts BizPerks (NW's name of similar program) in the page header.

Oh, looks like the BizPerks header is gone now too from SkyBonus.. It was there "recently" but I don't know when it dropped.

Because there is no longer a need for it, time has come and gone. No one is typing in NWA into their browsers anymore unless they are searching Google for information about a company that is no longer with us.

Well I did. Out of nostalgia. But, awhile ago they must have let it expire since it started just directing to Google search.

Even if they lost ONE sale, that would cover the DNS charge. Not saying they even lost one, but domain forwarders cost nothing in DNS.

The other thing is three letter domains are quite valuable. It's an asset in and of itself. We're talking 10,000s of dollars if not 100,000s.

According to its WHOIS the domain hasn't changed ownership in over a year so more than likely Delta didn't abandon it but probably changed something on what ever method they used as a redirect and don't realize it's broken.

Well you quoted my reply very selectively without the complete sentence. Read after "unless". There is simply no reason to type nwa.com in order to redirect to delta.com. Entirely unnecessary and it's time to move on. Instead maybe a good opportunity to make nwa.com a good historical website about Northwest's past.

Midwestairlines.com no longer redirects to F9, but instead to Rjets homepage.

TWA's URL stopped redirecting to AA many years ago. Things like this happen once traffic to the defunct company's URL declines to a very insignificant level.

You have to think that there is a point where the redirect is no longer worthwhile, or meaningful. It is a full 15 years since AA took over TWA. You have to think that for the vast majority of travellers, TWA is, if not completely forgotten, then a long, distant memory.

If anyone is still typing www.twa.com into a browser and expecting to be able to book a flight, they must surely still be using Netscape and listening to Nivarna's latest, no?

All,

Just to be clear the whois information show the domain is still registered. As someone else pointed out the cost of domain registration is minimal and as the cost of losing the domain is much higher expect this to be registered in perpetuity...

That there is no redirect (and this is purely a configuration thing) means one of two things:

  1. The "right person" in Delta's IS ops doesn't think it matters anymore.
  2. The "right person" in Delta's IS ops is young enough to not remember the existence of NWA.

Or, as Aeroflot777 says, a historical site for NWA which would presumably be done in cooperation with DL.

Well if you own the site and it is just sitting there, I say there is simply no reason not to direct it to Delta.com. It truly is unnecessary, but it hurts and costs nothing and could lead to a booking every now and then. If you own it use it. If only for people like me who don't want to move on.

The thing is, unless you're also redirecting SSL/TLS (HTTPS) traffic, there is almost no cost to performing a redirection for as long as you want. The main headache is keeping track of any old redirects, and where they point to. With nwa.com being one of their most important, it seems like a small price to pay. Keep in mind that they probably want to do something with old links that are stored in Google, but presumably Delta's SEO types are keeping tabs in Google Analytics for this purpose.

Too bad. Because nwa.com was more user friendly and faster than delta.com is 7 years later.

Yes, most major US airlines had online booking starting from the mid to late 90s. Online ticketing is what helped kill TWA by easily allowing Carl Icahn the opportunity to take advantage of his "Karabu Deal" via Lowestfare.com.
