MLS Teams Who Do They Fly?

Thu Apr 28, 2016 2:05 am

I know the MLS teams have rule that teams can not charter there own planes and must fly commercial. I see TFC a lot on AC, Was wondering if any one in the
New York Area knows what air line NYFC fly's with.

Is that recent? Last I knew, they were entitled to four charter flights (flights, not trips) per season with prior notification to MLS.

In any case, FC Dallas flies American usually but not always. Non-stop flights are favored.

I've seen the Chicago Fire at an AA gate at DFW.

LA Galaxy fly a combination of AA and AS last I knew. Now with the dedicated AA flights on SEA and PDX, maybe it goes to all AA.

When the Timbers were still in the A- League, I would see them fly NW to MSP, then after playing the Thunder, they would drive to MKE. Now, they probably just use this:

A few weeks ago I saw Seattle at SLC coming out of the gate I was using for my DL flight home.

I believe the charter rule remains as you say. For Seattle, I think they usually charter to the away cities that don't have nonstop flights (YUL, CMH) or when there are quick turnarounds between matches.

Seattle used to use AS a lot. Now that DL has more service at SEA, and DL is a team sponsor, I suspect DL has more of the business.

Also there are plenty of bus trips. Seattle buses to Vancouver and Portland. Portland/Vancouver bus to Seattle.

The Northeast Corridor teams (Philadelphia, DC United, NYRB, NYCFC, and New England) don't need to fly nearly as much. I assume DC-New England is a flight, maybe Philly-NE, but the rest of the trips are probably via bus.

I've been on an AS flight from DEN-SEA where the Sounders have boarded and headed to coach, I sat across from the head coach. The team had a match that afternoon and then headed to the airport for the flight.

This is shocking to me. Really shows how MLS is not a top flight league. I doubt any top flight team in Europe would fly commercial.

I knew someone who worked for the Red Sox AAA affiliate in Pawtucket who told me that due to bag fees they figured it wasn't any cheaper flying commercial unless someone drove the equipment down in a truck (which is what they now do). I guess their is less equipment in soccer which sort of reduces the problem of bag fees.

Dynamo have flown mostly UA, but with some SWA thrown in as well. Dash do the same.

I do wonder if MLS works out a deal with the airlines on this. Also, given the amount of travel, the players could get some elite status and free bags.

This is one of several measures MLS takes to make sure the richest teams do not buy their way to the top every season. How is a spending cap on transportation expense (for that is what it is really) any worse than a salary cap or a revenue sharing clause that, in one way or another, every professional league has in the US?

Dynamo use United when they can, RSL uses both Delta and B6.

Every of the four other "major leagues" (NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL) all use charters.

Because they can afford it. But not all MLS teams can afford charters, therefore the league has to put a cap on them to avoid undue benefits for the richer teams vs the poorer teams.

MLS doesn't make huge profits but their revenue is still in the millions.

I am sure all teams can afford it.

All are valued above $100m but the bottom teams have revenues in the low two digits, and most teams are losing money. When you're losing $3 million (Montreal) or $6 million (Vancouver) you simply can't afford to pay extra for charters.

Common sense says don't let teams spend themselves out of existence.

Yes if anything Europe needs some of the same rules common in the US, considering how much money is spent on players and how that means most teams can't compete, and even the best teams are losing money, only afloat thanks to Russian or Middle Eastern new money.

I am sure top teams subsidize bottom teams.

And MLS teams don't need to travel nearly as much as NHL, NBA or MLB squads.

And shared revenue will be significantly higher for those competitions....

I always laugh how in America the proud land of capitalism they demand socialism in sports, and in Europe it's visa versa.

Last month I flew AA ORD-LGA on a Sunday evening. New York City FC were flying back after they beat Chicago Fire. The team all boarded in kit (pretty much last) and flew Y. An announcement was made regarding their presence and the fact they had won their game which got a round of applause, surprised me given MLS's profile in the US. As a football fan myself it was pretty cool to see huge names such as David Villa, Patrick Vieira and Andrea Pirlo all at the same time....
