Normally in a expected high wind environment the aircraft is attached to a pushback unit as well as all main chocked and extra fuel loaded. There was an expected frontal passage of storms thru the area this morning showing bright reds on radar. Tower shows 52kt gusts on the metar at 30950z with a steady at 31kt from the west....be 0450 lcl there.

I think in the first picture I can see the chocks for the left main sitting on the ground, so perhaps they were applied lazily and jumped the chocks?

Ah no. No hookup to the tug for high winds, the aircraft if moved by high winds, will pull the tug with it like it was a toy.
Mains are chocked, but they all are when at the gate.
And never is extra fuel put on for high winds.
If the crew is on board, or a tech, the hydraulics will be put on and hope the aircraft doesn't weather vane, into the wind.
This incident with 2 United planes happened before 4:57am.
The pictures look bad.

I'm actually quite curious about ground procedures when expecting high winds like this. are there other options such as moving aircraft to remote parking to avoid a potential collision with structures? and added weight (fuel, tug, etc) wouldn't help? what happens to parked aircraft in a place notorious for weather, such as ANC?

N75425 looks much worse with wing and scimitar damage
N34460 looks like the front right gear door is pushed in and maybe dents or skin damage from the belt loader. The belt loader could have stopped the aircraft from further damage if it continued spinning to the right due winds.
From photos and terminal layout, the damaged aircraft were on the north side of the terminal at the west end of the concourse. Aircraft on the south side of the terminal may have been shielded from wind.

It looks like there may have been multiple aircraft damaged. Flights 1261 and 1966 to IAH were cancelled 737-800 & 737-900. Flight 1615 to ORD was cancelled 737-900 and flight 868 to SFO 319 was delayed.

Flight 1261 was not cancelled, it operated 3 hours late, showing due to maintenance, maybe slight damage if anything. The SFO was late :30 due to maintenance as well.
Maybe both these aircraft were being check for potential damage. I think multiple is just the two 739s, one for ORD and one for IAH.

Not to be a downer, but I hope you don't get in trouble for posting these photos. Most airlines have strict policies on employees posting photos of aircraft...especially those of aircraft involved in events like this. We do, and I've seen several employees get sacked.

I don't know too much about MX issues, but I do know airlines would love to have their birds home when a MX problem arises. Will they send a crew to patch her up just to fly her back to IAH? Or will she be fully repaired in AUS? There are no hangers big enough in AUS, and I can't see it flying like it is. So how is this type of damage handled?

They should moved aircraft to stay away from jetways and vehicles each gates if the strong storm coming into. They learned lessons next time MOVE IT!

With large aircraft at an airport terminal that is easier said than done. You have to have crews, equipment, and parking spaces available to move them to. If you're talking about flying them out then you have to find a suitable airport with space, flight plan, schedule crews, get fuel, etc. You also have to consider the safety of ground personnel. They need time to secure equipment as best they can and then to take cover. Radar will give you roughly an hour at most warning and with the nature of some of these storms maybe as little as 15 minutes. Moving airliners is not a simple task.

So in the summer, how many fly outs do you think would happen ? Airlines do not run that way.

Yeah, never have seen it done. Even down here in Florida, when tropical storms change course and happen to hit a station, the aircraft are never fueled with extra fuel. Remember one tropical storm years ago, the poor graveyard zombies ran hydraulics with the brakes set during the night.

Field trip will be mostly done out of IAH. A Scimitar, if both the upper and pieces were struck, will be shipped in more than likely. A sheetmetal crew will also more than likely make the repairs there. There is a United MX crew stationed at AUS.

Middle of the morning, before 5am, who would move it and when would a airline decide to move them ? And if the storms die out or change direction, that's a lot of money wasted.

Yeah that is not a realistic statement. The mechanics were probably the only ones at the station before this pre 5am incident. Some do not understand that work is performed to get a flight out right up to where the ramp gets closed.

It doesn't that much cost money. Just one or two persons take a tow to plane push back then park it. Tow truck just as little as 1/3 of gallon burn gas. If plane moves it would burn as 200-400 times than tow burns gas!

It's never quite that simple. Sometimes there is no qualified tow crew to physically tow the plane, other times you lack a qualified brake rider. Other times, whoever the managing authority is doesn't have enough remote parking to give you any and other times, they refuse.
To tow the plane you require a minimum of four people, one pushback driver, two wing walkers and one brake rider. You also require an escort if said brake rider does not know how to use the radio or the plane has an INOP APU.
Don't forget, you also have to bring the same chocks and equipment out to the remote pad with you which doesn't do much for you.
Also, the remote parking positions may not be viable with the forecasted winds. You always want to park the plane into the wind.

You can argue all you want about moving the aircraft but there are a whole lot of issues that come up with moving aircraft around to protect against severe weather. I have dealt with aircraft damaged by high winds and hail being outside at the gate. It takes time and money to move aircraft around to a safer place whether it is a hangar, an open area, or another airport. Airlines would take the cost of acts of nature most of the time in small situations. When it comes to hurricanes like what happened during Hurricane Sandy, airlines moved aircraft to different airports outside the storm area several days before the hurricane made landfall. In a severe storm, you do not know when or where it will happen, it's just a forecast with less than a few hours notice before anything severe approaches the airport.
Open areas have a risk just as much as being at the gate.

If the plane parked to terminal to the east side. If the wind from east. The wind can vortex picks up plane moving a little bit. It is similar people on sidewalk downtown Chicago if wind is from east and you could feel wind downwind against building wall on west side. Wind can violet any direction.

Not just a bit of money, but a lot. Then multiply that by 600 airplanes each for American, Delta and United every night, that's a huge amount of money for the rare event that happens on RONs, as in this case. Aircraft have been damaged during thru-flights too. Not going to move a plane to a remote parking spot 'in case' severe weather develops.
And remote parking is not all that safe. Have seen cargo containers, ladders, bagcarts and other items located at airports, travel long distances and hit aircraft.

A recovery crew went to Austin to perform temporary repairs, and believe #460 already ferried to HOU.
# 425 is also getting some temp repairs and she will ferry to IAH.
Both aircraft needed tire changes.

It actually takes a minimum of 4. Tug driver, two wing walkers, and a brake rider.

I'm surprised the damage to the planes wasn't worse. I was driving on Texas highway 183 yesterday, and there were about 10 consecutive utility poles down directly across the street from runway 17R-35L. Some of the poles were snapped in two in the middle like a toothpick.
