Do Domestic Routes Have A Lot Of Freight?
Was traveling LAS-MKE on WN a while back and noticed there were only bags loaded and no freight on our flight. I got me wondering about how much freight do airlines carry on domestic routes like this? Are there certain routes/city pairs that see a lot? Certain ones that don't? Or is there really know rhyme or reason to it?

I would assume CONUS to HNL would have plenty of freight.

I bet it really depends on the city. I can't imagine there is a lot of air freight going out of LAS on any airline. Due to the huge hospitality industry I would think there is a lot coming in.
When I worked in BOS there was a lot of seafood that left on planes daily. I bet the same is true for SEA. Cut flowers also travel a lot by air in airline belly cargo. Many get shipped international to a city like ATL or MIA and then are shipped domestic to your local florist.

Most of the PDX routes carry quite a bit of outbound freight. I imagine the same for SEA.
Cities with a high demand hospitality industry will support the most inbound freight. Fresh food has to be brought in somehow, and air is the best way to do it. Cities that either consume or produce a lot of perishable high value food items tend to have very good freight demand.

not nearly as much as there used to be. Back when the airlines flew domestic wide bodies there were many a container-load of freight on many flights. If I had a dollar for every UA LD-3 I built for ORD/SEA, ORD/LAX, ORD/SFO back when they ran DC-10's I could have retired long ago.
The rise of scheduled linehaul truck carriers dedicated the freight forwarders (such as Forward Air) also took a big chunk of the business that used to go on aircraft. Pretty much anything that doesn't need to go coast to coast in two days or less rides on a truck nowadays

Southwest has a huge amount of freight through BWI. In Feb, Southwest moved 2.5 million pounds. UPS had 3.8 million.

a little addition to my previous post. With the wide bodies going away, moving freight via air got more expensive. When you could load up an LD-3 with 3000# of machine parts or printed matter, your cost was minuscule compared to sending it bulk freight like you'd have to do now. You'd pay a flat rate for the can and now you pay a per pound rate for the bulk freight. So where in the "good old days" you could actually fly it cheaper than trucking it, it's the polar opposite now. Only urgent shipments fly domestically now

Intel's largest chip plants are up here in Hillsboro, so PDX does see a lot of high tech freight & there are at least a dozen other high tech manufacturers here as well & most all of that is air freight.

In 1995 I rented my own LD3 from HNL to PDX, as the items went on the flight we were on to SEA, but once we went to PDX on NW, we were on an A-320, so the LD3 showed up 2 days later after being trucked down.

That is very true. If I never see another 125 pound box of oysters it'll be too soon lol.
Also see quite a bit form ELP, computers and such that were built in Mexico and then sent to various US places. As well as the unassembled parts
going to Mexico lol.

BNA-LAS, LAX, PHX, and DAL are HUGE, HUGE, HUGE freight routes for WN. SEA is also a biggie along with MDW.

Just remember that US carriers also carry US mail, which is cargo that is almost 100% airmail to both AK & HI.

LAS-MKE isnt really big cargo route. At most you will see mail. Airports near ports will usually have a high cargo output. Also places where fishing is an industry would also have a high amount of outbound cargo.

WN moves about 35,000lbs a month here at MHT.

Air North moves about 25,000 pounds a week northbound from YVR to YXY. Only about 1/4 of that comes back down.

I was on an A320 of ZH on SHA-SZX last week (2h flight) and I was surprised how much freight was loaded. If that was representative of all SHA/PVG-SZX flights (there's around 50 per day + cargo flights) then there is a lot of cargo being carried.

I think it also depend of the airline, and not only the route.
I guess LCC are generally less willing to handle cargo when it might interfere with their pax operations
I know FR doesn't take any cargo (domestic or intl) because it's impossible to handle within the 25min turnaround.
