Air India no longer loss-making: Government

NEW DELHI: Efficient functioning and reduction in operational costs has helped national carrier Air India turn from a loss-making airline into an "operational profit unit", the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

"By cutting its operational expenses by almost 11 per cent, Air India has turned from a Rs.2,636 crore loss making unit in 2014-15 to a Rs.8 crore operational profit unit in 2015-16," Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said while replying to the debate on demand for grant for his ministry.

He also pointed out that Air India joined Star Alliance in 2014, "which has helped it to integrate better with the international civil aviation market".

The minister told members that by 2020, Air India's fleet size is likely to grow, by about 100 aircraft to about 232, and of this 28 more aircraft will be added by January 2018.

AI is making money while LH and AF are losing money, what is this world coming to?
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

What's Air India's widebody strategy? I see they have orders for 787-8s and 777ERs, any more beyond that and any chance of a foray into 787-9/10s or 777X?

Given the reason for the statistics being accumulated, I don't believe its beyond the realms of possibility that the numbers are highly massaged.

Operating profit isn't the same as actual profit

$1.2m operating profit less financing costs, less tax means they most likely still made a huge loss

My thoughts exactly. If AI are stating that the numbers show them to be "operationally profitable" then I am suspecting that there is inaccuracy or misrepresentation in those numbers. Misrepresentation = accounting fraud.

Agreed. Too many expenses pushed outside of the 'operations' bucket.

But at least there is progress. At this point, I pin the hopes of India on 6E.

So it's already affirmed that AI has fudged the number.

Well par for the course on a.net when it comes to AI. ME3 claim they are not subsidized (yes including EK), its because of transparent financials but then when AI publishes its reports they are fraudulent. How about waiting for the financial reports and the CAG report.

You don't trust those either, then unlike in the ME, in India you can use RTI to get any information that is not classified. How about exercising that if you don't trust even the CAG?
