Among other changes, 77Ws will be used on flights to HND and DXB instead of 789. Te latter will replace 763 to ZRH and 788 to BNE.

It's not a surprise, but sadly my beloved B767 is being relegated to second string routes and more domestic trans-cons. I do understand that it's an archaic old boat, but it is fast becoming the most comfortable economy seat in the fleet.
It is good for the business though. With amazing fuel burns, the B787 is putting all airlines in a good position when fuel prices go back where they have been.

Where's the traffic coming from on YYZ-DXB that it can support a 77W? People connecting from U.S. in YYZ? A 787 is one thing but it must be doing quite well if they're upgauging, though it's hard to believe expats and biz traffic alone can sustain this route. Maybe it's also about freight to Asia/Africa?

Maybe they are getting a boost from the drop of DXB by UA/DL. Especially UA, I imagine there are some star loyalists in the US that now are limited to AC or LH....

It's flying for AC since 1982 or 1993 for the -300. Quite a long career.

Under the current bilateral, they need the UAE's permission to offer more than 3 weekly.
FWIW, this archaic 3 weekly Canadian trait has been criticized by the Government's own review of the Transportation Act released in February this year. The review calls for minimum daily frequencies, increasing in 7 weekly increments, so things may change yet.

No it allows 6 weekly for both countries. However, if one carrier wants to fly more than 3 weekly, it requires both Governments approval. That's an old Canadian habit that some here have deliberately misrepresented (a lot harder now with the Government review blaming Transport Canada for it).
In short, TS or WS can pick up the remaining 3 weekly today if they want. On the other hand, if EK dropped YYZ, EY would not be able to claim the 3 additional slots without Canadian approval.

Directly quoted from the agreement....
"for direct own aircraft services, up to a maximum of four flights per week in each direction without restriction as to size of aircraft effective immediately, five flights per week effective June 1, 2001 and six flights per week effective June 1, 2003. Requests for seasonal increases in frequency shall be given sympathetic consideration consistent with paragraph 5 of Article XI. The operation of a frequency beyond three flights per week by any one designated airline shall be subject to the approval of the aeronautical authorities of both Contracting Parties."

Japan is also a spot where the icing issues rear there ugly head for the 787 GE engines. Certain times a year even japanese carriers limit where it flys t avoid the locations common to the issue.

I think it is more down below than up top. AC have a very strong partnership with EK when it comes to cargo. A lot of cargo going to beyond destinations in Africa, the Middle East & parts of Asia are funnelled through GVA & MUC and transferred to EK. So this move could be more about freeing up cargo capacity elsewhere in the network and moving the freight closer to destination.

HND will continue this winter with a 77W. So far there's been no update for the YYZ-NRT which is currently operated with 789.

YVR-BNE, YYZ-FRA, YYZ-CDG, YVR-ICN, YVR-PVG & YVR-NRT plus the new YVR-DEL are all going 789.

It will be on routes to LYS and also GVA for a short while.
Anyone up for an international short hop on AC's A333s can do it in November to MBJ from YUL.
