AA will retrofit its 737s with the scimitar winglets?

I'm sure the MAX will, when they start arriving end of this decade, 2018 or so.

Scimitar winglets are standard on the MAX, aren't they?

From what I know, only United have signed a contract so far to have their NG's retrofitted with the scimitar winglets. I don't think AA will bother as I don't think they have a large decrease in fuel burn, I've heard as high as 4% (which I don't believe at all) and as low as 0.5%.

There has not been much fuss over these 'scimitar' winglets as with Airbus's 'Sharklets'. I don't think they do much and I think they look absolutely ridiculous, so I hope that AA doesn't retrofit their NG's.

However, the logic of the oldest is retired first is not valid here, and there are several other factors in play.
Quoting Byrdluvs747 (Reply 218):
Yes, but why bother painting any MD80s now when there are 150 738s, 249 A319/320/321's, 21 A330's and countless RJ's to be painted. Combining the current pace of repainting and MD80 retirement, there's no need to even contemplate repainting MD80s this year or next.

Truthfully, I see no need to bother painting the MD80's. Its a waste of capital for something with a very finite lifespan.

The question to ask is, based on how many years a plane is expected to remain in the fleet, which is cheaper, painting or several polishings? If a plane gets polished every year or so and is expected to fly another 4 to 6 years, it may be cheaper to paint the plane once.

I have no idea what the costs are of painting versus polishing an MD-80, but the longer a plane remains in the fleet, the more sense it probably makes to paint it.

This would definitely apply to the ex-TWA MD-83s that came out in late 1999, the year the last DC-9/MD-80 was built. We know the last MD-80 is scheduled to leave end of this decade, so there is no reason to think none will be repainted. I'm confident that out of 160 MD-80 left, at least one will. I wouldn't make any bet on that, but I am almost sure at least one will wear the new livery.

Makes sense. I’d imagine they’ll work solely on the balance of the PMAA 738 fleet before they begin work on the 757s or MD80s, if at all. With the exception of the 757s and the 762s(and the handful of short timer 734s), most of PMUS’s aircraft are relatively young. I’d expect they’ll all be repainted.

Doubtful - it looks like they are targeting all international equipment to be completed by the end of Q2 next year. I have a feeling we'll be seeing the international 757s start to go in for painting after the summer schedule winds down.

AFAIK, this was one of the aircraft that were used for US Express before they were replaced by 4 CRJ-900.

-------------------

This one (N955SW), along with the other one in the pic posted before (N492SW), are two of the "new" 4 CR2s that will be flying from ORD to replace the first Chatauqua aircraft that are ending their contract this month. The number of CR2s could be increased in the following months if Envoy is unable to cover all the flights that CHQ will end before august. Skywest now operates 27 CR2s for AA (12 from LAX by OO, 11 from DFW by EV, and now 4 by OO from ORD).

As people generally prefer the ERJ over the CR2, there must be a reason why AA can't sublease the ERDs that are being retired to another operator like Trans States, for example (I think it has something to do with the purchase of the E175s).

Well some of those 4 at ORD have resulted in MKE-ORD going from 4 x daily ERJ to 5 x daily CRJ - even though it's a CRJ we're glad to have an additional frequency added back to ORD.

Hopefully the rumors of another increase in frequency when ORD is "Banked" with a pre-6am departure to ORD and a 10pm departure back to MKE will come to fruition, but for now the timing of the 5 x daily is a huge improvement for many connections into and out of ORD.

The 738s fly international as well. If that assertion were correct, AA would have started painting 757s a long time ago.

Yes they do, but I think that by "international "he means long haul non domestic routes that go beyond Canada, Bermuda and Central America. By "international equipment" he probably means planes that fly to Europe, South America and Asia: 757Intl, 767-300ER, 777, and ex-US A330.

I learned something here not having updated this for almost two weeks; I really got behind and it took a lot of work to catch up.

I will need help updating the OO, EV, and US aircraft. Currently I am not aware of any additional US aircraft being painted.

As mentioned, I hope we see the A330 in the new colors soon!

Has anybody managed to snap a photograph of N565AA? This is the MD-80 with the new scheme nose cone. Newest pic of it I could find on the net is from September.

So with the T7's basically all done, will AA double down on the 763's or will they speed up the 738 painting?

Since half of the 763 fleet has a limited lifespan, some are skeptical that the entire 763 fleet will see paint. I'd venture to guess they'll speed up 738 repainting.

You can tell its the new livery silver nose cone because the red cheatline does not run through the nose cone as on the other MD-82/83 fleets.

I wanted to add the list to part V for reference. There are just a couple of changes. As previously mentioned the last 772 went in for paint last week.

It also looks like another US 319 went in for paint last night. If anyone has the ship number of that aircraft that would be great.

It would be nice if someone with time on their hands would create an "American" fleet website - similar to what we have for United.

The only thing that proves is that no one got around to painting the sliver of red onto the newly-painted or manufactured nose cone.

I remain unconvinced. The gray on the nose cone looks just as drab as the nacelles, wing root fairing, etc.

So this won't change anymore, since all 47 are now repainted, none will be added and none will be phased out in the near future. The only change that could happen is another 772 gets the One World logo jet livery, or if one gets a retro livery. For example the TWA Twin Globe livery of the 60s on a 777 would be stunning, that would be a great idea IMO.

Nose cone in new paint? It's possible, but I remain skeptical based on the shade of gray. While a part-supply may begin to take form in preparation for future paintings, the shade of gray more closely resembles the current coat found on the engines and tail, IMO. Especially when compared to a current A319.

Agreed. I think simply "Boeing 777-200 (47/47) Complete" will suffice for future updates.

Take it from someone who works old MD80s and new 737s on a daily basis and knows the difference between the new metallic livery and the standard gray on all other 80 nose cones, and has seen 565s nose cone up close and personal. I can say with 100% certainty that nose cone is painted in the new livery. When you see it in person it's absolutely unmistakeable.

Between the LGA MD-80s and now the 762ER from JFK, 2014 has proven to be a year of monumental loss for NYC, as it relates historically to AA. A changing of the times...

Thanks for your input. It's taken into consideration; as I have not seen it up close and personal myself. If true, I would agree - painted MD-80s are on their way.

565 operated AA1025 PHL-DFW today. Saw that in person, I would back you up, definitely new color gray.
