Is that absolutely certain? I still think that for a plane that will stay in the fleet until the 2018 to 2020 range, painting might be more cost effective than polishing the skin and doing the maintenance that a bare-metal aircraft requires over the next 4 to 6 years.

According to the last company video regarding that issue. They stated that none of the MD-80s would be painted.

N838NN / 3FR is the 737-800 in the oneworld paint job.

It's been confirmed that the MD-80 fleet will not see the new livery, Nosecones are being painted with the new silver/gray for commonality in the paint shop.
The current plan is to have most of the MD-80s cycled out of the fleet by the end of 2017.

Apparently N837NN / 3FP is also in the oneworld paint

No, the plane was painted in ROW. AA sends all their retirements to ROW. I even remember reading the articles when the new livery was introduced that listed ROW as where the paint was tested. That is clearly the 757 used for testing.

Yes you are correct. This testing must have been done at ROW as that's where all of the AA aircraft are retired. The first paint to enter service was completed at VCV. I must have been thinking that

Cliché for sure, but a lot can happen in 4-5 years. Some of them may get painted yet.

In part 4, reply 5....it was statedthat there were 161 MD-80s. That was January 19.On this thread, on May 21, it was stated that there were 161 MD-80s.
So no MD-80s have been retired in 4 months?

Busy summer travel season. AA is scheduled to shed 25 MD80s this year per the 10K, most of them won't leave until Q4.

Slim to no chance of the M80's ever getting the new paint job. By the time they get around to painting all of the "long" term aircraft in their fleet, it will be 2015 or two years of the bulk of M80's retirement. In addition, the M80 fleet is dwindling by the month, so the total number of the type will become more and more insignificant as the months pass.

Barring any unusual events (ie. recession) the only exception may be one repainted for publicity/symbolic reasons.

That's right. The chances of flying on one are now very slim, unless you go to DFW.

ORD still has several MD80 flights.

So does ATL, just with a different airline.

Not a lot, if you exclude the ones going to or coming from DFW. ORD-LGA is now all 738.

On a side note, AA took delivery of its 17th and final 3-class A321T (T for transcon) last Thursday, 22May. The airline expects to begin taking delivery of 2-class A321S (S for standard) a/c sometime in late June.

Is it likely you would take the MKE flight without going to DFW, one direction or another?

How many more AVOD 738's does AA plan to take delivery of the next couple of years?

Boeings Order and Delivery spreadsheet shows 74 remaining 738 orders. One would expect them all to be AVOD going forward. The they should begin deliveries of the 100 737 MAX-8's theat are on firm order.

Boeings Order and Delivery spreadsheet shows 74 remaining 738 orders. One would expect them all to be AVOD going forward.

I would also assume that all of these, still on order, will have the Boeing Sky Interiors. And so will the MAX-8s.

Does anyone have any pictures of the new 737AVOD interior? I looked it up elsewhere and all I can find are just computer drawings..

First YV Mesa Plane has been painted
Reg. N241LR
It's at the Mesa Hanger in PHX.
My hunch says that it'll fly the first LAX flight in the morning

As well I believe it's got a new interior but can't confirm that.

I have not weighed in on the accelerated 2017 MD-80 retirement yet, so here are my   :

For the MD-80, a record quarter highlighted by strong over-achievement of targets, and a brand-new CEO (with a NB mentality) leading the strategy for the merged carrier, have factored into the escalated retirement date. If executed, dozens of aircraft will remain parked in the dessert for upwards of 7 years, while still on active lease from AA.

Clearly replacing capacity for ~160 frames is quite an undertaking. Yes, there are enough orders/options/delivery slots with A & B to accomplish this, but it will be too much for AA to absorb financially, if there is any slip in consistent profits over the next 1-2 years. And thus the active service extended. The three-year retirement plan would be ambitious for a healthy airline, not to mention one coming out of Ch.11 with large debt.

I’ve said for a while now that the MD80s weren’t going to be repainted only to be overruled and contradicted by the arm chair experts on here. To you guys, I salute you.

Gracious much? Act like you've been there before, maybe?

As I have posted before, I thought at least ONE MD-80 would be repainted. Given that when the new livery was unveiled, the MD-80s were going to be retired between late 2018 - early 2020. You can badger me and others as being "armchair experts" but that info is very credible. To add, the leases are active until 2024, at basement rates. But my overall tone was that we could not simply rule it out completely, with the information we had at the time. This situation is fluid.

Now enter Doug Parker post-merger and one extrordinary over-achievement of a quarter.... Not earth shattering that the strategy would change and phaseout accelerated to 2017, is it?. Obviously, with most frames now set for retirement in the next 2-3 years, it doesn't make sense to paint them.

BUT if the finacials cause any deferrals in the deliveries and extension of the MD-80 back to the 2018-2020 timeline, being repainted would once again be back on the table. However unlikely that may seem.

Quoting UA444 (Reply 181):
I have zero doubt the retirement will be later than they are currently planning.

Some perspective: A year from now, AA will have ~130 active MD-80s, with two years to reach it's retirement goal. For historical comparision, AA had 127 727-200s at the start of 1994... The 727 was of course retired officially in 2002.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

It's all speculation and conjecture.

However I do think it's slightly idiotic to sit here and say(and it wasn't you Trijet that said this, btw , "Well, Doug Parker is wrong! Those MD80s will be around til 2025 and they will be repainted!" when the CEO of the frigging company just told you that they're not going to be repainted.

And for all you know they're just as likely to accelerate retirements as they are slow them down. The combined AA is scheduled to received 115 aircraft next year with only 47 lease expirations. In 2016, they have 84 receipts and only 15 expirations. Assuming most of those leases aren't going to be reupped and are probably on 757s and MD80s anyway, what do you think they're going to do with all of that excess capacity? This number also doesn't include owned aircraft that could potentially be retired as well, although I think most of AA's aircraft are financed.

Unlikely any will get repainted, but not an impossibility. I think that CLT and PHL, and a few airports in Europe, are the only ones that still see ex-US 762s. My parents are flying on one very soon, from CLT to BRU.

I'll be surprised if any of the 757s and 762s receive paint, US and AA. The 734s and MD80s are a non starter in this conversation, as far as I'm concerned. The 734s have months left in the fleet.

762s - no.

757s very likely yes as they are used on international routes.

Still quite a few unpainted 738s. That's interesting.

I'm surprised it's this many. Keep in mind AA unveiled the new colors just 18 months ago, and already there are 319 a/c in new paint. Of the 738 fleet alone 40% are painted, or an average of five aircraft/month (including new deliveries). That's pretty impressive in my view.
