ZK NAR - Something Strange About This Photo

Fri May 06, 2016 6:06 am

I've been looking at this photo of NZ 737-200 ZK NAR

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-N...land/Boeing-737-219-Adv/2817752/M/

The space between NEW and ZEALAND seems too large, so it almost reads AIRNEW ZEALAND.

Does it seem so to anyone else? I've googled other images of ZK NAR and the spacing seems normal.
Nothing seems as good since the VC10.

The TEAL and NAC logos on the teal coloured cheatline behind the cockpit are also missing- there's another pic in the database taken 2 months later with the titles in the correct position.

My other thoughts were: the NZ flag is missing and I didn't think the light grey underbelly was introduced until much later- but the other pic nixes those thoughts.

The aircraft was in the above livery when it was delivered to NZ on 16 October 1978. I know the TEAL and NAC logos were put onto the fuselage by the engineering team at Christchurch, but had never noticed that the spacing between the NEW and ZEALAND was larger. Another photo I have from September 1980 shows the lettering correctly spaced.
This was the first B737 delivered to the amalgamated airline (i.e.after NAC was merged with Air NZ in April 1978) and this livery was especially developed to 'match' the DC-10s that were still in the Air NZ fleet at that time. No other B737s were painted into this identical livery.

Good spotting. I saw this pic and thought - when did NZ operate 731s? Is it me or is -NAR looking particularly stumpy?
