Last 747-200 Passenger Flight In History Op Today

Sat May 07, 2016 9:37 pm

The last pax 747-200 flight in history took place today with EP-IAI of Iran Air operating into IKA; it has no more cycles left on the airframe (and / or IR aren't going to give it a D check). That's all folks. End of an era.

There is a thread comparing the longevity of the -200 and -300 but this is such a momentous event in aviation history that it truly deserves it's own thread. In fact given the role the 747 played in making the world a much smaller place, I would argue not aviation history but human history. Tributes welcome.

So what will they do with the a/c if they can't fly it anymore?

Well now, there is still Baltia and Helenic Imperial which will soon start service with the 742!

The same thing that happens to any aircraft when it reaches the end of its useful life. Any reusable parts will probably be salvaged and the rest eventually scrapped.

What became of IR's Airbus order from a couple of months ago? If they're losing frames like this one and the SP, what are they replacing them with?

I find rather to my astonishment that I only made three flights on -200s. Two on Virgin Atlantic and one on Aerolineas Argentinas.

What about Kabo Air.

Two ex NWA aircraft are still listed as active.

Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

Do they have scrapping equipment at IKA?

All Iranian planes when scrapped, stay in Iran. It will either stay in IKA or it will be ferried to THR.

Depending on the status of the airframe and documentation, there are various options for one-time-release waivers to ferry aircraft to scrapyards or maintenance facilities.

On these flights, no passengers can be carried and other restrictions can be imposed, but it happens all the time.

How many 747-100s are still active in VIP/charter/Freight service?

I am not sure but Iran Air withdrew their 747-100 from service in 2014 according to airframes.org
but I don't know how reliable they are.

Also Caspian Airlines were supposed to have had a 747-100 by July last year (according to
Flight Global World airliner census 2015) but I don't know if this is correct and if it was in service.

You can also add engine testbed N747GE, it's line number 25 on the production line.

It spent 21 years carrying Pan Am passengers.

Planespotters lists this frame as always in cargo...it was built as a combi though before being quickly converted. The passenger windows were never sealed though.

If they ever get to fly here, likely an A340-300 or -600. When Rouhani visits NYC for UN Week, a Meraj Airlines A340-300 gets used.
