AA MD-10 Or MD-11 At BFI 3 May 2016

Mon May 09, 2016 3:55 am

I'm a few days old in posting this, but I was driving by BFI last tuesday and I saw what appeared to be a AA MD-11 on the SE side of BFI. When I came back through about 2 hours later it was gone. According to wiki, the last AA MD-11 flew in 2002, so why would there be one still flying around in AA colors?

You likely saw N874AA. Which is a 727-223.

It was probably sold to an Eastern European charter airline and they just haven't had enough money to repaint it.

Umm no. He saw the AA 727 the Museum of Flight donated to a museum in Kansas City. It's in the process of being readied for a ferry flight.

AA never had MD-10 and has ceased operating DC-10s or MD-11s many moons ago, before the 727s.

The MD-10 was a modification for FedEx as I recall. AA's D10's are all likely sitting in the desert. I don't know the status of it's M11's, some may have been freighter conversions.

All of AA's MD-11s were sold to fedex. Many of their DC-10s were sold to FX too but most were parted out with a few being converted. . Most of the ones UA sold to FX were converted to freighters and some are still in service.

Well I hope to hell the poster knows the difference between a -10/-11 and a 727. I would assume he knows the difference anyway.
So tell us what else he saw there lol.... JK

It was hard to tell, I was on my motorcycle, on the freeway, and not a lot of time to really stare. Based on those pictures I'm relatively confident it was the 727.

According to Wikipedia, not only did AA have the MD-10, they were the launch customer for it.

No they weren't - AA was the launch customer for the DC10. The MD10 is a DC10 with an upgraded flight deck similar to the MD11, this upgrade wasn't available until the 90s. IIRC FedEx was the "launch" customer for the MD10 - I don't believe AA ever had any.

FedEx got the MD-10 STC developed, in partnership with McDonnell Douglas, specifically to have common, two pilot flight decks among their MD-11/DC-10 fleet. I'm not sure anyone other than FedEx has been a first owner of an MD-10.

I believe there are 1 or 2 floating out there, but they were sold by FedEx to the carrier.

Indeed, at least this one and I believe the next Orbis too.

I'm surprised NW never did the MD-10 mod. They had late build D10s that would've lasted long enough to make the mod worth it.

Because probably it never was part of their plan. They needed an aircraft like the DC-10 on long-haul but twenty or so years ago financially they weren't at their best. Also they later firmed up orders for both A330-200s and -300s. Delivery of the later started in 2003 while the last DC-10 was retired sometimes in 2006 or 2007.

And not many of the used DC-10-30s acquired by NW were late build. Even the newest had already spent at least 10 years with one or more previous operators.

That's right. Only five of 24 second-hand were of the late build for Japan Air System and Thai in 1987/88. Before those the others dated back from 1981 or earlier.

They should have converted those 5 to MD-10s and they could still be flying today in DL livery.

That would be totally uneconomic considering the much higher fuel consumption of a 1970s-vintage design compared to today's modern aircraft, not to mention the maintenance costs of a 30+ year old aircraft.

The fact that no passenger carriers converted DC-10s to MD-10s is a good indication that it made no economic sense for them to do so.

And for only 5 aircraft with three engines when they had modern twinjets on order.

Fedex own the stc for MD-10 conversion, been performed mainly at VCE during P to F conversion program...the process itself, other than very complicated was considerably expensive, have no news about non-FX MD-10 planes (other than fuselage donated to ORBIS group, previously part of FX MD-10 fleet.
