Not only that, I don't think they would go through all the troubles of planning an attack on an Egyptian state aircraft, with a passenger load of 45%, over open waters, on a red-eye flight. Wouldn't they want to maximize trauma and fatality?

Someone placing a bomb on an aircraft may not even know the load factor or even where the plane is heading.

They might not have known the load, however it is possible that they specifically targeted the CDG flight.

Based on the people on CNN indicating three security people on board is puzzling, maybe they had info to suggest the flight would be targeted, which may explain why the airline did that.

Every airline has a security department. It could really be anything. I wouldn't read too far into that. Ex. they could have been doing a security audit in CDG

Who knows the motives behind these maniacs (of any ilk) who murder like this? Maybe it's as simple as showing that France isn't a safe haven? Or that Egypt is unstable? Or because it went through TUN (for example) and that's where the device could be planted? I'm not expert, and I try to avoid labeling things a certain way, but it's hard to not see it through a certain prism given recent history.

I will say that we've seen some crazy non-terrorist related crashes too. Anything is possible at this stage.

Hell lotta good that did by the looks of it, unfortunately.

I agree. I am not sure if these people are supposed to act like air marshals, but they couldn't stop the plane from going down. Maybe if someone got access to the cockpit, they tried to stop that person. Maybe they helped during the flight. Voice recorder will hopefully allow us to hear them.

To be fair, if it was a planted device, there wasn't really anything they could do. Perhaps it was the security detail (1 or more) that might have been responsible? Again, who knows?

Not really relevant at this point, due to the nature of this situation, but isn't 10 crew members on-board somewhat excessive for an A320? Factoring out the pilots, that works out to 8 cabin crew members.....for an A320 and a relatively short time in the air, it seems odd to me to have so many flight attendants.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the passengers, crew and all other individuals that have any sort of connection to this potentially devastating situation.

It's a little unclear exactly what they mean by that but I wonder if they meant that it had entered Egypt's airspace, traveled 10 miles, then disappeared?

In addition to the (for lack of better words) 'regular' causal guesses (catastrophic failure, weather, bombing, hijacking), I can't help but wonder if this may be another instance of an aircraft being shot down? If the FlightRadar24 track is indeed accurate, perhaps by a malicious entity trying their hand at shooting aircraft down while at sea (I can think of a few reasons this would be preferred path) or a military/navy ship? Just part of the pre-evidence speculation...

Wasn't the shoot down on MH17 almost only possible on first world equipment?

That is part of my wondering of a military cause (if shot down) however there are a number of instances of first-world air-to-air weapons being used in/by third-world conflicts/combatants. Shooting down an aircraft at 30,000+ (if that indeed was where the trouble developed) feet certainly is no small task. From various readings I know there are some mighty capable smaller anti-aircraft weapons platforms, but I wouldn't be able to name them or their specific capabilities.

I see your point about lower passenger numbers would mean easier take-over of a jet, but with the 9/11 attacks, those were meant to be a huge statement. They didn't just disappear from radar at 37,000 feet. They were hijacked and on a mission towards a huge megalopolis.

Why? If Islamic terrorists blew the aircraft up, then it is Islamic terrorism.

If some other sort of terrorist blew it up, then it is that sort of terrorism. Although I can't imagine why ETA or IRA or any other terrorist groups would be targeting a CDG-CAI flight.

Muslim extremists are happy to kill their kin. They kill to terrorize. As for this missing MS A320,this does not look good. While I am one to be optimistic, this is one situation where I am realistic. I have a growing hunch that this plane was brought down by a bomb. The plane was at 37K and probably preparing for decent. It was on the path to land at CAI and there was a 3 degree change in direction but the same change in direction can be seen in previous flights from CDG-CAI. In a nut shell, this was an abrupt disappearance of a modern airplane. There is very high likelihood that this plane was bombed.

The better question is, if someone managed such a feat, how did they do so 20-30 miles out at sea?

Pretty much means it would have to be a ship based asset, and in that region, pretty much everyone knows exactly where everyone else's navy ships are.

You are right about this, even though I can't confirm whether Egyptair has its own security team in CDG. American and Canadian airlines have their own security staff in Paris. Since the attacks in Paris last November, security is very tight in major airports in France, especially the police and security screening areas. The country is still in a state of emergency at least until the Soccer European Championship in June.

If the terrorist attack is confirmed, I don't know what they could do more. Travel in Europe will become even more stringent, especially in France.

Thoughts with the victims and their loved ones.

I'm very confident that the authorities will get to the bottom of this one in due time.

I'm going to try not to speculate. Flying is so much safer than it used to be, it's easy to think that something truly sinister would have to had occurred. But with what we've learned about some recent crashes (AF 447, Air Asia), anything is possible.

Well I think it's a semantical argument. Whether they are truly representing their religion or not, that's how we've come to identify them. I don't for a minute think all Muslims would support these actions, but if they claim to do it in the name of Islam, then labeling them Islamic Extremists is one way of identifying them.

I don't really want to get going on this sidenote personally, so I'll just stop referring to it for the purposes of this thread and just say "terrorism" or "terrorists" and let others delve into it more if they wish.

It is very unlikely that an A320, B737, or any other jet aircraft would have a fatal mechanical problem, at any point in the flight, and even more unlikely at cruise altitude...
However, the probability of it is never 0, and the probability that it happened to this specific aircraft is not 0 until evidence emerges that disproves it.

Incidentally why is MS staffing an A320 with less than 60 passengers with 10 crew? Erroneous reporting?

Possibly more pax on the return trip, requiring a full crew.

The aircraft has 145 seats so assuming 1 F/A per 40 seats (I am not sure what the exact regulations in Egypt are), they would need a minimum of 4 flight attendants. Plus, the aircraft has 16 business class seats so perhaps they fly with an extra F/A. Again, I am not exactly sure of the requirements in Egypt but I believe it is usually based on number of seats in the plane not number of passengers actually flying on a specific flight.

Well dunno. I have taken quite a few trains and planes in France after the attacks and I wouldn't say security is tighter sensu stricto.

Yes there are many more policemen and military walking around everywhere but I am not sure to what extent there is more "security" in the sense that TLV for instance has (i.e. additional layers of checks).

Even the high-speed trains are again "unstaffed" (so whoever can board a high-speed train in a regional station with whatever in his or her luggage and no one is going to check anything).

Before we go down the rabbit hole of "Islamic terrorism" let's do realise and apply some logic here that a Paris to Cairo flight would likely be majority Muslim passengers and hence, with most Muslim extremists, the victims are their own kin.

Bear in mind that contrary to the UK, France does not have a very large Egyptian diaspora. I have flown CAI-MAD a few times in the past and I didn't feel a very "Muslim" sentiment. A mix of tourists (now largely down), well-off Egyptians (which surely is the case for Paris) and people connecting on MS's network. It is certainly not a Hajj charter.

Fox is still calling it a 737.

Maybe the Canadian version but not the one I'm watching.

There's also the possibility that this is an IR 655 type incident...

Absolutely. Given the aircraft's last known coordinates, a missile is definitely a possibility. Of course, we're all speculating this early on.

CNN is saying it's a 737-800

Ahh, CNN. Even in the midst of tragedy they manage to amuse.

Thoughts are with the families of the passengers + crewmembers.

She is now back on and she said that it could have been climbing because the plane "experienced a catastrophic event, which caused part of the plane to climb that was out of the pilot's control..." That makes no sense to me. Does it make sense to anyone else?

Maybe it was a regular step-climb?

Maybe the inbound CAI-CDG sector was full?

Quoting laxboeingman (Reply 108):
CNN just said the flight hours again, FO had more than 4,000 flight hours.

According to avherald:

Quote:
The commander had accumulated 6,275 hours with 2,101 hours on type, the first officer has accumulated 2,675 hours.
First to fly the 787-9

It was over the Sea right? Then I doubt it's a missile. I am in Sharm right now. I was going to make a thread about aviation in SSH coincidentally.

My best friend said about me flying to Egypt, "lightning doesn't strike twice." She said this yesterday. Sad but true.
