LH Puts Additional A340-600s For Sale

Thu May 19, 2016 10:10 pm

Lufthansa has listed 4 A340-600 frames, C/N 482, 523, 537 and 569, for sale, with delivery available in September 2016.

http://speednews.com/aircraft-listings

These 4 additional frames are in addition to the 4 already grounded/stored A340-600 frames (763, 790, 794, 812) which have been available since earlier this year.

Surprising that lower fuel prices are not helping these birds. Even Lufthansa is now getting rid of them.

One, I think they would have almost give them away. There are not a lot of airlines with A346's and not a lot would want them. Some of this also might have to do with the ongoing Labor problem LH always seems to be having.

If they're not taken up, then that's just going to make it that much harder on the few remaining A346 operators.
Granted, there's a lot that it shares with the A330, but also a lot that it doesn't.

If they already had some, if they wanted a potentially cheaper buy with similar capabilities, etc.

Also, that might be the reason LH is trying to hustle them, knowing how difficult it might be to do that once the EK 77Ws start coming off of lease.

When does/would Orbis acquire a new frame? Perhaps an A346 would take up too much runway for harder to access locations, but such a frame would certainly offer a lot of useable space. I imagine maintenance would be not be too onerous for the type.

Out of the box question - LH group has 779 on order, 77W (Swiss) already as well as 77F (LHC)

I see a potential 77W order for LH at really good prices to bridge the capacity shortfall until the 779 and A350 start coming online.

They're getting a DC-10-30 that goes into service next month and has spent years getting refurbished. A340 isn't happening.

I got $150USD that I can use to buy one of them. Any higher and I won't be able to afford to use/maintain it for the 2 round trips I have in mind for it in the next 18 months. After that I won't have anything left to my name and can resell it to the highest bidder.

C/N 482, 523 and 537 are all leased from Mitsui Bussan Aerospace. It looks to me like the leases are up and will not be extended. So no drama here. With C/N 569 the story is different.

Maybe Mistsui Busan will be able to place these with Mahan Air?

I could be wrong and this is an example.
Air Canada retired it's fleet of A340-500's at a young age in favour of the B772lr. They lwet leased the aircraft to TAM. TAM used them for a little while and then they bought 777's. Last I heard these plane, still young, are sitting at the far end of a airport in South America waiting for the next operator that will never come. Unless, you where some rich person.

Someone brought up Orbis, good idea. But Orbis uses FEDEX pilots to help them out, well because the planes come from FEDEX. But would they not want a plane that could get into airports that have runways too short for the A346?

Hardly surprising. While the A350 is clearly better, the A340-300 did do fairly well against the competition of its time. Also it is so old that there is really no second Hand market for those Frames, so it makes sense to use them until they are at retirement age. Also, it is smaller and thus more flexible.

The A346 is different - the 77W is simply much better and it is a large plane. So it is probably a rather limited airframe on the market. So better try to get it off to Iran now, as I have doubts those Frames will fly till the end, I am sure LH will retire the last ones early, too.

May be the German Government want to buy them at a price where Lufthansa can make a decent profit.
The other scrap they already offloaded with them at high cost for tax payer.

As I wrote in another thread LH is busy downsizing their network (CCU, HYD, AUH, KUL, SGN, CGK, ACC just to name some) and fleet size (parking of 346) while destroying the trust in LH (conflicts with pilots, flight attendants, ground staff), Rumour is, next to be cut are BKK, CCS, NKG, GIG, NGO and BLR. Really frustrating to see this. So no need for the 346 anymore. I would not be surprised, if they were not taken over by IAG in the near future.

There is absolutely no way, period, that the EU would allow that. You will not see a merger between any two of LH, IAG, or AF/KLM.

Quoting tavong (Reply 39):

No one has developed a conversion and given the 346's tricky COG, high engine maintenance expense, and low number of frames built I think it's unlikely one will ever happen. A 343 freighter would be a better product.

It'd be useless for anything other than lite parcel.
Its length could make it tricky for maneuvering in anything but the larger hubs, that take 748Fs too.

Who is still flying the A346 other than IB and LH?

VS (for now), EY, SA, W5

I understand VS and SA are both phasing them out; anyone know when? What are EY's plans? I presume W5 will fly them for a long time; they have, out of necessity, become adept at keeping older aircraft flying with little or no outside support.

The A346 is different - the 77W is simply much better and it is a large plane. So it is probably a rather limited airframe on the market. So better try to get it off to Iran now, as I have doubts those Frames will fly till the end, I am sure LH will retire the last ones early, too.

I'll be on one of the remaining LH A346s in a few weeks from MUC-PEK. Always thought it was an interesting floorplan in coach with the downstairs lavs in back. Great concept for not bothering people who have seats near the lavs.
