Yes, a very important win for Boeing to get an Airbus exclusive operator to switch to the MAX. Seems like this will be a great year for the MAX and the gap in orders will close.

Is it relatively easy to move from A320 to B373 as flight crew? Will Vietjet build a pool of B737 flight crew from scratch, or seek to transfer some current crews from Airbus to Boeing? Is there any consensus amongst flight crew that prefer one cockpit environment to another?

It's clear from VietJet's PR about the 737 order that they will operate both types concurrently. They talk about this order helping to increase their fleet to 200 aircraft by 2023.

Vietjet Air is not really that "new", they have been around for 5 years already.

Vietnam has just opened up the market for private player and with Jetstar Pacific is now basically Vietnam Airlines, VJ is the only real competitor to VN in the Vietnam Market, where middle class is growing by large numbers.

But yes, I have no idea where on earth did all these crew came from.

I wonder if they will take A321neos in the new high density option also (240 seats?). That would be a realistic step up from 200 in the max in terms of "right sizing" capacity across their network.

It's a possibility, but perhaps they just want one aircraft size 190-200 seats for all markets. The Ryanair model...

And before it was the Easyjet and also Southwest model of success for a long time. We will see...

Surely Air Asia are the FR of SE Asia already?

And there is a massive difference between the growth of FR and U2 (or WN etc) which took place in a relatively mature environment, with developed airports, ATC, plenty of pilots and maintenance staff etc

As for the plane itself, the MAX200 clearly has very attractive economics for this sort of operator.

It's difficult to see how that much growth can be accommodated both specifically in Vietnam and in Asia as a whole.

Heck, you don't get more political than China when it comes to commercial aircraft orders placed with both Airbus and Boeing and even they make an effort to match the frame to the needs of the airline they assign them to.

From a size perspective it seems to be a good fit for them. 180 seats in A320, 200 on 737-8 and 230 on A321. Question is about configuration of the A321 Neo. Maybe they will go to even higher capacity, means 240 seats.

According to Wikipedia they will get lease 10 used A319 from AB, I searched for a link, but could not find a source.
