Embraer 190E2 First Flight

Mon May 23, 2016 6:58 pm

It was imminent but now it has happened: the Embraer 190E2 has just taken off for the first time. Here is a first video of the event:

Thanks for sharing! We'll see how Embraer fairs with these now that the CSeries is gaining some momentum. Best of luck to Embraer, they are great planes (at least from a passenger perspective).

If the engines on the MAX/Neo look big, on the E190 they are enormous/gigantic.
They are the same as on the bigger C-Series. There are 3 different sizes of P&W GTF: 56", 73" and 81". Does the E190/E195 need the 73" one? Would a 65" version with less drag be significantly better and powerful enough?
It would surely look more in line with the fuselage.

Congrats for first flight.

PARABENS EMBRAER!

I have thought, and now continue, that Embraer builds a mighty pretty airplane!

I even LOVE the Phenom.

Question: what does the cone-on-a-string do?

Hopefully this bird sees more orders. I wish UA ordered the Embraer, it turly looks like a fantastic airplane. I would not be surprised if B6 ended up converting its remaining orders to the new version. After all, they do need a smaller gauge airplane like the E190 and Embraer is promising substantially lower maintenance costs and fuel savings.

Beautiful aircraft, and I wish Embraer cotinued success. But does it look to anyone else that the plane just kind of levitated off the runway? I mean, the nose was hardly pointed up, if at all.

Yes thats what came to mind for me too. Less than conventional in its take off.

Congrats and good luck to Embraer.

Interestingly shallow climb-out. Haven't seen any of the Boeings/Airbuses limit performance in such a way on first flight.

Any particular reason?

Frankly, between the takeoff and the flyby, it felt a lot like an airshow and not a first flight.

Looked gorgeous.

From what I gather, Embraer actually had an absurdly aggressive first flight.

As previously stated.Wow the engines are huge compared to the fuse. There is a good pic also on Flight Global.Should be a very economical aircraft.'OR' is surely the only technological step left after this extreme by pass engine.

Congrats to Embraer. Now I can start my airline.

Does anybody know what engine version was on this frame? A customer can choose 4 models of the PW1900. 19K, 21K, 22K or 23K lbs of thrust variants.

I think it should do a circular flyover the opening games in Rio, and along the beaches! Especially if they have more than one flying by August.

Brazil needs to show the world it's a great and diverse country despite the current political and economic crisis.

When does the first E2 go into service?

I think first delivery is supposed to be 2018. And yes, I agree with you. It's frustrating that the bad news on the Internet and social media clouds the good qualities and the magnificence that has shaped a country throughout the years.

In addition, Aviationweek published a good read on the test program:

http://aviationweek.com/commercial-a...begins-e190-e2-flight-test-program

Apparently the first flight was weeks ahead of schedule:

Quote:
Embraer completed the first flight of the E190-E2 airliner on May 23, several weeks ahead of schedule and paving the way for the appearance of the aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow in July.

...

"We are very glad to get this flight off ahead of schedule," says Luis Carlos Affonso, senior vice president of operations at Embraer. "It really shows how robust our development process has become through modelling and simulation using the iron bird test rig. Getting to fly early really shows we have a good aircraft."

Regarding the flight enveloppe during the first flight:

Quote:
During the flight, which explored the envelope to an altitude of 41,000 ft. and maximum airspeed (Vmo) and maximum Mach number of Mach 0.82 (Mmo), the aircraft was tested with the flight control system in both direct law mode and normal law mode.

Three more prototypes are scheduled to join the program. The 4th one will have a cabin.

Quote:
The three prototypes, which will be joined early in 2017 by a fourth with a full interior, are expected to amass around 2,000 flight hours during the test campaign.

Congrats to Embraer.

I believe both the E2-190 and E2-195 will sell well. In particular if they lose weight... As it looks like they have.

Quoting mat66 (Reply 3):
They are the same as on the bigger C-Series. There are 3 different sizes of P&W GTF: 56", 73" and 81". Does the E190/E195 need the 73" one? Would a 65" version with less drag be significantly better and powerful enough?

500+ million for a custom size development costs if the same cycle life and efficiency were targeted.

Please recall the PW800 derivatives are done cheap!
So there costs were less because:

1. The PW800 specific parts are heavy compared to the GTFs as fewer stress/weight engineering iterations were performed.
2. The PW1500G parts were engineered for a yet not-public 27k of thrust with the gearbox having further margin. Thus allowing cheap 'parts bin engineering' for the PW800, in particular the low compressor.
3. Pw800 parts are engineered for half the cycles and a quarter of the hours of the pw1500G (fewer engineering hours to work out stress or overheating concerns).
4. Several percent in fuel burn was 'given away' in the PW800s to save engineering optimization hours.

A new fan size for the E2s would require the detail engineering to achieve durability and fuel burn. This would have added a year to EIS and $1million USD to the sales price of every E2-190/195. Plus spares for the engine would have cost a few percent more.

Now the MRJ sized GTF was already in development. OK, the MRJ has a slightly oversized engine as they got what Pratt was working on.

Oh, my back of the envelope is 67" with the thrust growth Pratt requires all new engines to now have built in. (about 15% planned thrust growth within 5 years of E IS. In other words, with a coating change and blade optimization, not with say CMCs )

So the business case led to earlier EIS and letting Pratt/Bombardier pay for more of the R&D.

Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 19):

Good fly by wire systems lab testing does that for you! That implies much better software optimization at EIS.

Quoting Coronado (Reply 32):

Ohhh... new information for me. I always wondered why the E2s were so heavy. I suspected margin...
