BeNeLux Aviation # 7

Tue May 24, 2016 1:19 am

Let's start this 7th installment with so-so news. Brussels Airlines reports April 2016 traffic is down 17% year-on-year. European destinations are responsible for most of the decrease. While passenger numbers from JFK and IAD are down, the addition of YYZ results in a net 10% increase on TATL flights. The African network remains the airline's best asset, with traffic up 3%. Average load factor was 66%.

Obviously the airport bombing and the chaotic reopening are to blame for the decrease, but the limited capacity of the airport also means that Brussels Airlines operated at the most 85% of its usual flights. Easter holiday was also in April last year, versus March this year.

With the end of pre-screening for all passengers and increased airport capacity, the airline reports passenger numbers are increasing in May. United, ANA and Delta all report passenger traffic is trending up again. Delta has even upgauged JFK to an A330 again, and United's flights at the beginning and end of the week are nearly full.

Airport authorities and airlines are working together to move as many carriers out of the temporary check-in facilities, including rescheduling flights if necessary.

From a personal experience, I'd say both departure and arrival need further work. I can't understand why the meeting point for arriving passengers has been moved to the sidewalk across from the terminal. All it does is protect the building, not the passengers and greeters, and it's not three soldiers standing guard that's going to change my opinion.

The drop-off point for passengers needs much better signage. As far as the pre-screening is concerned, it seems the procedure is to send every passenger to pre-screening until the line stretches the length of the tent, then other passengers are directed to the bypass, with no verification whatsoever as to whether or not they have a boarding pass.
