DL Ends YQR/Regina Service Jul31

Thu May 26, 2016 12:53 am

July 31 is pretty close in to cut a market and a strange time to do it during peak...

Delta Air Lines is ending its service to Regina on July 31, a move that will leave the capital of Saskatchewan with no flights on a U.S. carrier.

Delta currently flies two daily round-trip flights between Regina and its hub at Minneapolis/St. Paul. The loss of the flights will leave Regina without nonstop flights to Minneapolis for the first time in more than 30 years, according to the Regina Leader-Post.

It was just this past fall that Delta "upgauged" to larger aircraft for its Minneapolis-Regina flights. Despite that, Delta said the financial performance of the route has faltered since that time.

"The reason for suspension of service is due to lower passenger demand and softening revenue," Delta spokesman Anthony Black tells CBC News.

So far YXU, YYT and now YQR have lost ALL air service on US air carriers this year. Canadian airports are getting hit hard by the low Canadian dollar.

I am not surprised by all of these cuts to oil destinations and Canada. I am however suprised by how close in UA and DL are making the cuts. The advance bookings on the routes must be VERY bad...

Its crazy how dirt cheap fares are from USA to Canada right now.

Keep the dollar strong and I know where I am going skiing this year...

Demand has to be in the tank for their to be so many cuts and close-in one at that. I know Canadian vacations are very attractive this year with the crashing loonie.

Sad to this cut. It was a unique one for MSP. I remember it used to be flown by Compass' E175s, so the current CR9 isn't exactly an upgauge in relation to those days.

Used to be flown by Mesaba ARJs, then went to Compass E-175s. I assume prior to the ARJs arrival in the late 90s this was a DC-9 route from MSP.
I think it was CR2s for a while and then bumped-up to CRJ-900s last year again.

Yeah close-in, and odd not to at least make it through the summer schedule into mid/late August.

Granted Regina is a relatively small market with a total population of around 200,000 people. It's not a leisure destination, and I imagine heavily relies upon Canadian point-of-sale traffic to US sun/beach markets and/or energy industry traffic.

When it was larger aircraft in the past it usually was a triangle route combined with YXE. After the routes were split, YXE usually got a 70-seater and YQR got a CRJ...

Sad to see this NW mainstay be cut. IIRC NW was the largest US carrier to Canada-even flying YVR-MEM at one point. I think they served YYZ/YVR/YYC/YEG/YWG/YUL/YHZ/YQB/YOW/YXU/YQT/YXE/YQR/YYG all at one point.

YXE metro is 50% larger than YQR and actually sees a large spike in traffic during hunting season to the point where NW would schedule 752's on e

YXE is larger in scale and in business opportunities than YQR. Regina is the capital though. Both were hit last year with the withdrawal of United from DEN and ORD and here is Delta pulling out of YQR to leave it with no non-stop connection to the US, except some WestJet to Vegas and Phoenix IIRC. Saskatoon has these services, am sure about it. Now i don't think YXE will handle this gap, cause the drive is a 2 1/2 hour mess and flights are sometimes more expensive than a TATL! Delta has been upgrading aircraft size to a mainline A32S from time to time, but not sure it will move to mainline destination from now on.

From the Canadian side, Norcanair/Time Air/Canadian Regional served MSP from YXE and YQR for quite some time. Not sure if (or how long) the route survived when AC Jazz took over...

How much larger in transborder traffic has YYC been in comparison to YQR, YXU, and YYT?

It really depends where the airports are drawing traffic from:

YQR is around 230,000, and serves a mostly small rural area population.

YXU = is around 366,000 metropolitan population, but has close proximity to Detroit and Toronto.

YYT = is around 215,000 metropolitan population, and would serve the whole province of Newfoundland-Labrador, with the rural population being small. Regionally they serve most of the maritimes provinces, where populations are low.

YYC = is around 1,230,000 metropolitan population, with three additional cities within 2.5 hours driving that have a combined population of around 250-300,000.

Not big news. All American Airlines have said that aircraft under 50 seats are not really wanted anymore. The regional have all gone to 75 seat aircraft. Plus with the low Canadian dollar, low oil price(economic driver), and frankly no tourist attractions marks the end. Remember that Westjet is a codeshare partner with Delta and American and Air Canada is codeshare partners with United.

There is business in Regina and the flights to MSP provided quick and convenient connections to the US east coast. I would mention that the early flight timing may have had something to do with the lack of success but it has been like this forever and ultra early flights out of spoke cities are normal . No preclearance at YQR also doesn't help the timing. Maybe UA or DL will add the triangle route back like they previously did with YXE and YQR. not sure how popular those kind of routes are these days.

Anyways, YEGORD and YEGSFO are being cut with short notice as well by UA. The quick and mass exit of UA at YEG tells what the future may hold for the region if the current trends continue.

Looks like DL is cancelling its fairly new route ATL- MDE -that has been operating since late December. CTG, that started at the same time, also looks to be cancelled, except for the very peak Christmas season.
In the case of MDE, even though loads are good, I guess taht the yields are not good enough to justify having a 737 being used for 20 hours per day on the route (includes overnight stop in MDE).

Yeah! I meant a bit boring!

I don't think a triangular route will be back. It's rather changing planes at any other bigger hub and that's it. I already think how weird is Air Canada YOW-YQR-YXE-YOW during the Summer season.

Delta announced YXE won't be axed.

Isn't it worth for Saskatchewan to have a flag airline?! Even if times are a bit harder than like 3 years ago for example...

I never saw this coming. The double daily to MSP has been around for as long as I can remember. While much is made of this having to do with the low oil prices this route was here long before oil was much more then a drop in the area's economic bucket. And, I might add, YQR had a significantly smaller population base back then. YQR's catchment area has a very funny shape to it. They collect most of southern Saskatchewan with historically significant bleed off to MOT and more recently ISN. It should be noted that both of those airports tend to have higher prices then YQR since the Bakken boom. The western edge of their catchment area is determined by YYC and GTF. In the north it's YXE and in the east it's YWG. The unique portion of their catchment area is a neck along the Sask/Man border extending almost to ZJN.

I think we'll see another American carrier very quickly pick up the slack. My first guess is UA to ORD. This would be tailor made to fit Ipsco but I don't know how much business travel they have between YQR and their HQ in Chicago.

I flew this route in Feb of 2003. There was nine of us that left YXE but about 30-40 got on in YQR. Still pretty light loads on a DC-9-30.

This triangle route was only in winter. In summer YXE typically got quite a few A319/A320's full of fishermen heading north and in fall 752's were used for the hunting season.. My understanding the upguaging wasn't only because more seats were needed but because none of these guys knew how to pack light. I know of situations during a heat wave when passengers were held back from the DC-9 flights because of weight not seat availability.

Quoting USAirALB (Reply 10):
I think they served YVR/YYC/YEG/YWG/YUL/YHZ/YQB/YXU/YXE/YQR/YYG all at one point

There is also a spillage effect from the YQL region further to the south that will drive over the border to GTF, and get a better deal to SLC or DEN.
