How many foreign pax 747s still come into the USA?

Thu May 26, 2016 5:12 pm

Was just curious, how many foreign pax 747s still come into the USA? With A380s & B777-300ER numbers growing, along with 744 retirements, it's a lot less than it used to be

I think MIA is down to one lone BA flight..

How many foreign pax 747s still come into the USA?

Thu May 26, 2016 5:19 pm

Well, on one hand... good!
It means progress.

That said, LAX still has several hunchback operators:
  • QF to SYD, BNE, and JFK
  • KL to AMS
  • LH to FRA
  • (occasionally) OZ to ICN

....and then of course there's still plenty of cargo operators.

BA, LH with 747-8 and KLM are among airline still flying 747's to the USA. Qantas has its fair share too. Korean and their 747-8 and Air China with 747-8 will fly them here for a long time to come. What is sad is the 747-8 did not sell better as a passenger plane. At least Boeing made the plane that killed the 747, the 777-9.

As far as I know BA still sends the 747-400 to SAN, PHX, DEN, SEA, LAS, JFK, ORD, MIA, BOS. I am sure I have missed a destination or two.

Only BA, LH, KL, VS, QF and LY are left flying the 747s to the US on scheduled services. Of course, add DL & UA on the home front. I may be leaving out KE and Asiana, not sure about them.

    What's so sad about that?

It was a complete market reject, and it prompted a replacement to come about sooner; yet there's still three airlines flying it with pax, and many more with cargo, so it'll be around for quite a while. Win-win.

KE has been opping 748i to ATL, and OZ ops 744 to LAX on and off.

KE flies a daily B748i ICN>SFO>ICN. I also saw an OZ B744, non-F, take off at JFK>ICN last Monday.

Because many enthusiast want the legacy of the 747 to live on for another couple of decades. But with so few 748s out there, it will be harder to spot them.

Here are the 744 operations this summer that I can think of off the top of my head (by airline:

BA: SAN, LAS, PHX, DEN, ORD, MIA, JFK, BOS
    VS: LAS, MCO
KL: SFO, LAX, IAH, ORD, JFK
LH: SEA, DEN, MCO, IAD, BOS
    LY: JFK
    KE: HNL
    BR: SEA
    QF: SFO, LAX, JFK

    And 748:

LH: LAX, ORD, IAD, EWR, JFK, BOS
    KE: SFO, ORD
    CA: SFO, JFK
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

    LAS: BA, VS

MIA still sees 2x B744 from BA daily.

LH sent 748 in winter but I think they've moved to year round A380.

IIRC MCO sees the VS 744, but I may be wrong.

Denver is a nice treat, sometimes I see both the BA and LH 744 on the ground at the same time.

Huh, missed that one. Wasnt that a daily service? If so then there will be a reduction of the total LON-LAS seats BA offer as the 2nd LHR-LAS flight is only 4x weekly.

No, I meant what I wrote. BR still sends the 744 on 3x weekly flights on SEA-TPE (see 7/29 as an example). BA is 772/77W these days, I believe.

I didn't find any in late July, which is the timeframe I was looking at. Similarly, I didn't find any KE 748s on ATL-ICN during the week I checked - all 77W and 388. If these airlines operate 747s as one offs on these routes, I didn't catch them.

Actually, I do think I need to rescind my note about KE having the 744 on HNL-ICN - it looks like it goes all 77W/333 later in the summer. And they do have the 748 on JFK-ICN, which I had missed.

Again if you check the schedule on BA.com throughout the summer BA53/52 (the morning rotation to SEA) is going to be operated by the 747-400.

Yes, you're right of course - was too lazy to look at the flight schedules and I am always at work when the early flight arrives and departs so only see the 777
I keep hoping KE up gauges from 77W to 747 during the summer. Now that they just got a shiny new 748i, they gotta send it someplace right?

This is a daft topic thread. We know JAL have ditched their B747's; we know Thai have reduced their B747's; we know Cathay have retired their B747's. I'm speculating but I suspect will speed up their B747 retirements.

Last week I just flew an LY 400 EWR-TLV, they use a 747 only once per week on Th arrival/Sat pm departure. Return was a 777. Given how little international travel I do and envision, at the ripe old age of 48, I realized that may have been my last 747 flight (unless in the future I go out of my way big time to ride an -8). I was talking w the FAs and they agreed, within 5 years LY will be a pure two-hole Boeing fleet.

I remember vividly my first time stepping on a 747 at the gate in JFK, bf our flight to LAS (DC-8) in 1977. I'd written to UA about how much I loved flying, and was given a private 747 tour and breakfast in the red carpet lounge. That was back when airlines actually thought letters from 9-year olds were cute and merited a response.

    VS have reinstated a 747 for LHR-JFK

They did in March for a few weeks but it's gone again now (it was covering a delayed B787 delivery) G-VROC did the honours if IIRC, before leaving the fleet.

    You can still catch VS's B747's on LGW-MCO & LGW-LAS, MAN-MCO & occasionally MAN-LAS

How many foreign pax 747s still come into the USA?

I THINK QF still operates the 744 into DFW.. I remember seeing one there though granted it was last year when I flew out of there on NK to ORD.

Not for a long time. They've gone A380's on SYD-DFW-SYD. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 744 come back if they start BNE-DFW-BNE at some time in the future, but I could see a 789 on MEL-DFW-MEL first, when they get those at Qantas.

Also to MEL 3 days a week using the 744ER

It only operates 2 days a week, used to be 3

QF's 744 fleet is quite stretched as it is, so a BNE-DFW flight with the 744 is unlikely. With the 789 arriving in the 2nd half of next year I expect MEL-DFW to be one of the first new routes for 789. We may see a BNE-DFW flight in the future but only after MEL-DFW. If QF were to operate to DFW from SYD, MEL & BNE I would not be surprised to see the SYD flight downgraded to the 789 and the A388 moved to another route, most probably HKG

Hasnt CI stopped flying pax 744s to US? IIRC Cargo flights have continued but LAX, SFO, JFK are all 77W now. YVR still gets 744 this summer.

    SEA: BR

    You must mean BA.

No, I meant what I wrote. BR still sends the 744 on 3x weekly flights on SEA-TPE (see 7/29 as an example). BA is 772/77W these days, I believe.

BR schedules show 77W 4 days a week and 744 the other 3 days.

Also LAS, don't know if it's a mix of 777s and 747s but I saw a BA 747 as well as VS 747 in Vegas back in April

Until the end of April BA operated an LGW-LAS 772 flight.

However they have now consolidated their flights to LAS from LHR and have operated a 11 weekly (instead of a daily) 744 service LHR-LAS since 3 May.

I do not know why they dropped the LGW flight. It may be because they wanted to operate the larger 744 (and have none based at LGW). Or it could be the volume of transfer passengers they get at LHR. Another possibility is to use some of the LHR remedy slots from their BD purchase that were surrendered by Little Red (VS).

I think AI operates only the 777 to EWR, JFK, ORD and SFO now......they operated the 747 to the US for almost 35 years starting from he early 70s.....

as mentioned here and in other places the change allows LGW-JFK.
