Planned Routes That Never Came To Fruition

Sun May 29, 2016 5:39 pm

Although we've had similar threads in the past, they are all archived and don't cite any recent examples.

What are some examples of routes that were planned/GDS-loaded but never had a single flight take off? I can think of EK DXB-PTY and NW AMS-BLR.

Spanair's BCN-BEY and BCN-DME.

They were announced the same week JK went bankrupt.

SA ORD-DKR-JNB
QF ORD-LAX-MEL
UA ORD-DEL
OU ORD-ZAG (Going back to Jan 1994)
DL ORD-LHR

I don't know if it was loaded in any GDS system but Aerosvit on their website had O'Hare to Kiev advertised to start summer of 2006.

Might be a bit early on that one, as they claim to still be pursuing it vis-a-vis regulatory negotiation.

Eurowings CGN-LAS - was to begin in April this year, pushed to June but now indefinitely postponed

Delta ATL-NBO - US Homeland Security denied them permission at the last minute over security at NBO

Canada 3000 YVR-DEL - DEL was launched instead after 9/11 before Canada 3000 shut down completely

Emirates DXB-Kano Nigeria - was going to launch along with Abuja, but only Abuja was launched

Big Sky (GQ) announced it was going to add BOI-FCA (Kalispell,MT)-YYC and FCA-GEG but they began their spiral and it never commenced.
This was 2008ish. It would have been one of their multiple times at both Calgary and Kalispell.

Thinking of previous mention of PIT-PDX on US, I think that was announced previous to and planned to start just after 9/11/01 IIRC. Seems to be rambling around in my mind like that.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Off the top of my head
IAH-LOS Arik Air
IAH-ABZ City Star
IAH-CAI MS (not officially announced by MS, but they were dropping hints left and right)
IAH-THR IR (Planned for a 1980 startup, according to PA employees that were to service the flight at IAH. A little revolution but the kibosh on this)
IAH-CPH SK

SCN-NCE on LG.
What I heard the few passengers, that already have booked were routed SCN-LUX-NCE

AA:

SJC-RDU
SJC-GDL
SJC-LGW
JFK-NCL (IIRC)

AS:

SNA-YVR (I think it might flow once before AS learned they couldn't do it without FIS facilities in SNA).

Air California:

SFO-ACV (It was shown on their timetable map with a dotted line as a future route about 1971. Never happened.)

Didn't MX or someone announce SCK-GDL, but it never happened due to unwillingness to put FIS facilities in SCK?

AC also announced YVR-DEL nonstop A340-300 seasonal service to begin in October 2001. It was cancelled in the wake of 9/11. I can't remember Canada 3000's plans on that route.

AC is finally starting YVR-DEL 15 years later starting October 20 this year, with 3 per week 787-9 seasonal service until April 8, 2017.

IINM, that was never announced, only rumored within AvGeek circles.

In fact, most of the local speculation in SJC was for service to STN, not LGW... as several tech companies had a presence closer to that airport.

Not sure if officially announced but NW when ordering the A340 the Logan Airport News indicated BOS-NRT would be one of the routes operated by NW'S new A340'S when they arrived, NW never took delivery of the A340. But in hindsight I think their taking the A330 was a wiser decision.

AA also had plans to launch BOS-NRT with the MD-11.

Actually Thomas Cook was going to launch winter seasonal LGW-RNO for the ski traffic. But then they claimed the customs facilities at RNO were inadequate, as pax would have to wait 3 hours or so to clear.

Wow I never knew DL was so big on Africa!

Around 2009, they had plans for service to/from Accra, Ghana; Cairo, Egypt; Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa; Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria; Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; and Monrovia, Liberia.

Nairobi and Monrovia never started in 2010 because of security concerns: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/06/03/africa.delta.flights/

Abuja lasted for I believe four years but didn't mature quickly enough:
http://thenationonlineng.net/why-we-...ghts-into-abuja-by-delta-airlines/

Cape Town I think ran for a season before getting the plug pulled in 2010:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293740-i9186-k2889773-Delta_Airlines_drops_Cape_Town-South_Africa.html

There was also a Cape Verde scissor hub that appeared on their route maps with continuing service to Dakar, Senegal; Freetown, Liberia; Bamako, Mali; Luanda, Angola; and Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria:
http://airwaysnews.com/galleries/klm-0311-intl-rm-combined_23282.jpg

There's an interesting internal communication on some of their services here:
http://6331-presscdn-0-25.pagely.net...wp-content/uploads/DeltaAfrica.pdf

Delta has been very ambitious in Africa. Sadly, not much of it has stuck around.

I don't think AC was ever very serious about that route, and doubt they expected Australia to agree to amend the very old Canada-Australia bilateral to permit it. They were probably happy it was never approved as there was too much capacity on the LAX-SYD route then. The AC route YYZ-YVR-SYD made much more sense.

I don't think DL was on LAX-SYD at the time and AA certainly wasn't. I think the point was to share traffic with UA using their JV.

ATL-LHR Route wnet to Delta but had to use LGW
LAX-MIA Route was awarded to Western which pulled out in 1980.
