EK To Deploy A380 To NCE

Thu Jun 02, 2016 2:17 pm

On the sidelines of the IATA Annual General Meeting Tim Clark revealed NCE will be the next European destination for the A380.

Quote:
Clark said the next new European destination for the Dubai carrier’s A380 will be Nice, France.

Air France used to send 747 to Corsica (do they still do?) so why not a A380 to NCE.

In any case, I still wonder why no AGP for EK! Costa del Sol is extremely popular for Middle Eastern tourists, and Andalucia for Asians.

Wonderful! It will be amazing to sit along the waterfront at Promenade des Anglais and watch it depart/arrive!

I believe (I could be wrong) that the problem with HAM is the lack of space. At present there is no dedicated A380 gate available but once the new cargo facility is fully operational new gate areas will become available.

2 or 3 class bird going there? Is that known yet? Would assume a 3 class due to the high wealth levels of the residents in the area, Monaco included.

Definitely a 3-class aircraft, just like the current B77W that plies the route. EK sees adequate F demand on DXB NCE and on top of that, the number of 2-class A380 frames is very limited.

For a second, I thought about opening a new thread about this comment from Mr. Clark:

"Asked whether there were too many A380s in the Emirates’ fleet, Clark said, “Oh no, never enough, no way. The A380 is the sweetest thing for us. It is our one unique selling point; this is a marketing advantage.”"

But then I've noticed that I haven't enough popcorn available for a new A380 thread today!

Approach to rwys 22 should be great to watch.

Has NCE ever handled an A380 before ? I know there some wingspan limitation of 65m on twy (ok for 777 and 747 but certainly not for A380)...

EDIT: looks like NCE has already received A380 and is compliant

This suggests that EK will have to switch from T1 to T2 for their flight.

Confirmed from July 1st on.

3-class A380, daily.

EK77 DXB 8h45 > NCE 13h40-15h40 > DXB 00h10.

http://airinfo.org/2017/03/23/emirates-nice-airbus-a380-juillet/

I suppose this means a change of terminal for EK that operates from T1. Only T2 has A380 compatible gate.

Seeing the 777 fly over the Promenade des Anglais was already a treat, can't wait to see the A380 do the visual aproach!

Also QR to reopen DOH-NCE with 254-seat 787.

I am told they're switching temrinals in June. It's about time because T1 gets really overcrowded in the summer.
In the past months, there's also been a lot of work around that gate (Gate 54) including resurfacing both on taxiway T & U etc.
Both runways also now have wider shoulders for the wider wingspan/outer engines.

NCE has reached its design capacity of 12M. Last time I visited I saw some work being done at T2 (possibly extending the check-in area). But nothing I'm aware of regarding T1 which is becoming totally inadequate given the traffic growth.

They are well aware of the problem. T1 has completed a major re-shuffling with all security now at ground level and all passengers going through the duty free area on the first floor, with more space at the gates. The next step is going to be the creation of a few more gates with airbridges as embarking with buses is becoming a source of delay as traffic jams of buses build up.
T1 executive lounges have also expanded. T1 has also had its arrival baggage claim refurbished.

As for T2 it's just undergoing a change, with an extension and a new passenger flow as well, with lots of security checkpoints so as to minimise the impact on passengers.

Looking at this summer's schedule, it's a race against time to complete the work, as traffic keeps on rising.

I believe I am correct in saying that Emirates don't fly to Marseilles. If so I find that a bit odd as it is such a huge conurbation.

I agree. AGP and MRS are indeed pretty big holes in EK's network. Also a bit off topic, but did EK flew to TLS?

Its possible to operate an A380 to HAM for ages (EK already did once).
BUT you could only use one or two position with just one jetway for boarding. Also on Apron 1 only a limited amount of taxiways were usable due to lack of space.

Now it all changes. The apron is being renewed, spaced to fit an A380. Also they built two A380 positions with double jetways, which can be used by either one widebody or two 737/32S sized planes.
Right now these positions cant be used by widebodies as the part of apron right next to it is still under construction, no space to push them back. But when this part is finished (should be within 6-8 weeks) any airline could serve HAM with an A380.

I think EK will do so very soon.

Thanks for the details. Shame that most gate space at T2 is now being occupied by concessions. Not only it crowds the departure area, but it also blocks the view of the ramp and runways :(

Marseilles, Lyon and Toulouse are larger conurbations than Nice but somehow always attracted fewer air passengers. 9.5M, 8.5M and 8M respectively. The French Riviera has always been a major tourist destination. The three other ones not as much.

I only realised recently that EK had retired/sold its remaining A330 and A343s. Its amazing an airline of this size and complexity, with regional and ULH routes gets by with just three variants.

The catchment of Nice within 2.5 hours' drive by car is 8 million.

That's correct, EK never flew the A380 to Nice, it's their only aircraft type that didn't come to Nice yet. Otherwise we had everything, from the old 727/A310 to the last 777, A330, A343 and A345 ;)

At the moment, the only A380 that landed in Nice has been the Airbus one (F-WWDD and F-WWOW) ;)
