United DC8-21 "captain" Names

Forgive me if this is a dupe post, but I've always wondered about United's early DC8s, the -21 and 50 series in particular, that had "Captain WD Williams" or "Capt Henry Hucking" names by the nose. Maybe the -61 and-62s had them too.

Were these named after actual current captains at United or former captains?

Yes, they were all early air mail pilots who flew for Varney Air Lines, Pacific Air Transport and Boeing Air Transport, which became United in the early 1930s . Most of them finished their careers in the Jet Age flying the DC-8. From open cockpit fabric biplanes to 600 mph jetliners in a little over 30 years; that's how quickly commercial aviation advanced. Hucking didn't retire until 1971!

That's neat tribute. Explains why they were only on the early DC8s

And what have we done since 1971? BORING...OK, the DC-10 and L1011 were cool, but after those two, I fell asleep!
