EK's long haul A388's have 489 or 491 seats the 517 seat ones don't have a long haul crew rest and are used to Europe and Asia mainly.

100 or so seats blocked off means they carry 390 pax compared to 266 on a 77L though the A380 probly doesn't have much freight but that can go via SYD/MEL/BNE.

Excess bags could probably been loaded via SYD/MEL/BNE if needed on days with strong headwinds. In theory anyone checking in early the bags could go via one of these services and reach DXB a around the same time?

Whilst I think thats a good idea in theory, would the rule stating that passengers & their bags need to be on the same plane cause an issue? Maybe it wouldn't as delayed bags are sent on another flight? Anyone clear this up for me?

Rules vary from location to location but I think that the general rule is that unaccompanied luggage is OK as long as it undergoes additional, more thorough, security checks. It effectively becomes freight.

The reason why checked bags have to be off-loaded for no-shows is because they have not been through that additional security. The assumption being (though it seems to be less valid these days) that a terrorist would not want to blow themselves up.

I understand also in some jurisdictions that passengers and bags can be separated with no additional screening so long as the passenger doesn't cause it to happen.

In my mind though it's almost the same as the passenger volunteering the separation if the "send bags early" concept becomes standard practice and the means of getting your bag sent early become predictable.

40-42t payload will be perfectly achievable year around!

Yep, but that's not enough to fill all the seats (like some people were claiming).

How much slack is there in the Jetconnect fleet at the moment? If EK were hypothetically to back off on Trans-Tasman service, QF's only short-term option would have to be to make up capacity with mainline - perhaps cramming some more use into the A330s.

If EK dont operate the three TransTasman A380 sectors (BNE/SYD/MEL-AKL) then those a/c will sit on the ground all day in Australia. EK will continue to operate because it's better to have them earning some money, rather than 12hours + sat doing nothing.
Nothing seems as good since the VC10.

Surprisingly, there is breaking news that Emirates will be using the A380 from October 30 and not sometime in December as was originally thought.

Maybe there gold-plate ground bus will be ready in time, along with a couple of sets of air stairs?

As I see it the biggest issue with sending bags early has nothing to do with security but rather in the case that a passenger is offloaded and their baggage is already most of the way to Australia. That would cause a headache.

For awhile it was cheaper to fly them across to AKL than have then sit on the ground in Australia. It was said the revenue they picked up with passengers and cargo was better than paying Australia to sit on the ground.
Whatever the actual decision was, it must be working. By the end of October almost 2000 seats per day out of AKL, 1500 to Australia alone. Saves QF operating 8 738 roundtrips, throw in LAN or LATAM 789, plus the CHC 77W.
Same capacity as 11 738 round trips per day.
I wonder if at some point AA will extend their LAX-AKL service to MEL to offer a second entry point into Aust.

Also wonder with CI becoming a player in the Trans Tasman market with CHC-SYD, CHC-MEL, AKL-SYD and AKL-BNE if they will continue to steadily increase. At this stage they will be offering 15 flights per week between NZ and Aust. They were talking of putting A350 into AKL market in 2017.

When will New Zealand's infrastructure break with this tourism. The hotels chains must be loving it at the moment.

I don't think AA will do AKL-MEL but maybe LAX-MEL when they get 789's replacing the second QF service.

CI have expanded quite a bit in OZ/NZ I wonder if they will keep the current schedules across the Tasman with 3/4 weekly on each route and add CHC-BNE and AKL-MEL a few times a week? Are they going to run the 744 on AKL-BNE again this year? They have extended the time the extra BNE flight runs.

The cost of flying the aircraft to NZ and back and the ground costs in NZ would be considerably more than having them sit around on the ground in Australia.

Emirates started the NZ routes because they rightly believed they could make money from them.

Probably depends on if they still have 744s.. I would like to see them return again. But they'll start receiving their 350s soon and they've continued to receive a handful of 77Ws.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I just booked DXB-AKL and can see in the seatmap that the rear economy section (rows 80-88) is completely closed for reservations.

It EK is upgauging the flight to the A380 is because the loads in the front cabins is very good, blocking some economy seats is not such a big issue if you can fill up the First and business, 14 first and 76 business is a lot of money.

Also having many more flights a on EK network to AKL give them the option to still get good loads of cargo in other planes that have more capability weight wise.

EK also charge more for the direct AKL - DXB flight, compared to routing via Australia.

I wouldn't say some when they are blocking 76 economy seats. The difference overall compared with the 777-200LR is still 147 more bookable seats on the A380, including 4 more seats in First and 34 in Business.

Sunrisevalley published the data of the A380 trial flightt between AKL-DXB and they had blocked of some 120 seats(?) (payload for the flight was 40t) so if they only have to block 76 seats that sure is good news for EK.

Just booked all the family on this flight, great connection from Dublin and one stop major attraction. Give me 16hrs straight any day over stoping in Sydney after 2 long haul flights any day!

Anyone now what Emirates policy is on blocked rows, can you actually use them in the air or do they stop customers using them.

No real difference for direct just depends on hiw busy the day is.
