Frenchblue A330 With Second Hand Seats

Mon Jun 06, 2016 8:38 am

Well this is interesting: Frenchblue last week received its first brand new A330 ... without seats. Plane was ferried to BOD on delivery and will have second-hand seats installed.

1st Airbus A330 Frenchblue was delivered without seats, plane is now in BOD for installation of second hand seats...

How many other airlines install second-hand seats on brand new aircraft?

Don't know, but why not? I suppose the seats are reworked and good as new.

Well, that's for sure something that Frenchblue would have not advertised about !

But I have to admit that's not a bad idea economically speaking.
Having to furnish a small fleet should cost a little more than a large fleet but I guess this is mostly relevant for F and J seats where there's some personalization.
For Y or W, seats are mostly standard and cost advantage of used seats is not that great IMO

Great topic though

I guess it's the advertising claim FrenchBlue will promote if anyone points it out ^^

I can't wait for the full livery to be disclosed. I hope it would be as surprising as the F/A outfit choice

BA's 77Ws were delivered without F and J seats - they were installed at CWL. I don't think they were second hand seats though, F was, at the time, an all-new design J was a refined design. I don't know if the frames/structure of the J seats were re-used from retired aircraft.

Is the livery shown on official Airbus pics and Frenchblue's facebook page not the full one?

OK got it... well the Air Caraibes cabin already used the denim design for the seat covers, so it could be similar.

Could it be that they're currently fitting the cabin of F-HPUJ with the former seats of F-OPTP which was refurbished by Sabena Technics in BOD to become F-RARF ?
I sincerely hope not...

Well those seats would be more than 7 years old, probably an older, heavier, thicker generation not suitable for a LCC.

The lead time for ordering new seats is as much as 18 months if with IFE, 12 months without IFE - seat suppliers are very busy, so picking used seats gets the aircraft up in the air very quickly. And indeed there is an abundant supply of used seats in the market, in decent condition, at less than a third of the cost of new ones. Adding a fresh fabric cover is all it takes.

I´m pretty sure that SK old seats, that has been taken out by SR Tech in ZRH, will find their way to Frenchblue. We were told on a visit there that the seats had been sold to French airline, but they would elaborate further.
2-3-2 is NOT a premium configuration

I think that's the answer.

There is only one small problem: it's a ULCC carrier, planning to have at least 380 in a dual cabin layout, with some sort of "Business Class" - this sounds to me like a 3-3-3 configuration in Y. SAS used to have 2-4-2 style layout and only 195(?) Y seats in Economy - so you need at least 2 ex Y cabins for one French Blue...
But the question remains, is it possible to have 380 seats in one A330 with 2-4-2 layout and Business Class?

Yes, from what I heard they plan to have 378 seats with Y350 and W28
IMO, Y could be 35 full rows of 9 abreast + 5 atf rows of 7
W could be 4 rows of 7 abreast

The airline just released its full website, allowing us to have more details on cabin configuration

http://www.frenchblue.com/fr/services-tarifs/classes/economique

Y ("Eco Blue") and W ("Premium Blue") seats look classy and confortable enough. IFE is 10inch large which is a quite nice, especially when AirCaraibes' are only 6,5inches

One way tickets as low as 130€

Based on the link below, German manufacturer Zim is providing the seats for both classes. Aircraft will also be equipped with WiFi.

Indeed. According to the phrasing, ZIM is the supplier so the seats are not "second-hand" to my understanding.

The question remains, why seat integration is done outside Airbus facilities ? Was it a choice from Airbus to off-load its own P20 station ??

The release from the airline on its website is quite clear to me :

"We chose Airbus to build our fleet. At the end of June, our brand new A330-300, equipped with WiFi, will be delivered to start operations.
We developed the arrangement of the cabin without any compromise on the comfort.
Our choice went for the German manufacturer Zim, renowned for the quality of its production, to supply the seats of the Economic and premium classes.
And from spring, 2017, an A350 will join the fleet with the same arrangements."

well thats because they want to fit alot of seats to this plane. but still these seats looks really good and modern, especially for a low-cost carrier.

That's definitely a pretty nice product. 10 inches IFE are not that common on LCC, that will greatly benefit to the overall pax satisfaction that will make them forget about the config :)

Does anyone know if they intend to fly under their own callsign/IATA code or will they keep using TX/FWI as they do since they've started OP ?

Seeing the posts above, it may not be the case that the seats are secondhand, but just that ZIM seats are not linefit offerable on the A330, and as such Airbus will not install them on site. This is similar to when FlyDubai used to fly newly delivered 737s from BFI to PAE for installation of seats with Lumexis IFE, because Lumexis was not linefit offerable on the 737 line then.

In this case, it's definitely not the IFE as SAS has taken delivery of Zodiac RAVE equipped A330s.
