Return Of The Continental Retrojet!

Tue Jun 07, 2016 2:25 am

Ship #435 has just returned to the line from the paintshop wearing the livery her sister ship 436 previously wore up until about a month ago. Happy to see these colors grace the sky once more! New reg N75435

I would argue that UA's entire current fleet is one big CO retrojet livery...

My intention was not to start a flame war, I believe the heritage of both airlines can be celebrated in tandem and without deameaning the history of the other. Both airlines have a storied legacy and both deserve to be celebrated equally. Even though I started my career with Continental the Saul Bass tulip livery is one of my all time favorite colors. The Brasilia in Saul Bass and Battleship will forever hold a place in my heart because that's the first plane I remember flying on and I grew up flying them up and down the west coast. That's why I proudly wear both a meatball pin and tulip pin on my uniform to celebrate the heritage of both airlines that are now one new United going forward

I'm glad they did it.
I, too, was hoping for the selection of another of the retro schemes, but anything is better than nothing, amongst a sea of golden globes on blue tails, plus to Friendship bird.

Actually, the "Proud bird with the golden tail" campaign never mentioned the meatball.

I don't think anyone flying Continental at the time noticed it either.

What about the rumors that UA would paint a retro livery on a widebody 777 or 787?

Having recently moved to Houston (UA largest hub mind you) the nostalgia for CO there goes much farther than the employees. I can now understand this is as much or more the legacy customer base than legacy employees

I suspect the same for the retro UA plane

I do appreciate when a retro jet uses the titling along with the color scheme. I appreciate the AA retro Piedmont, AirCal, TWA, AWAC, etc., but they would look so much sharper if hey have the original airline titling instead of a generic "American" that doesn't fit the scheme.

According to my source with UA (an ex-Con) 436 was always scheduled to be repainted after 7 years-in fact she said that if CO fleet planning was still running things the plane might have been sold as that's around how long they liked to keep planes. Word got out that it was going in and a lot of employees were upset about it so sounds like they replaced it due to employee demand. She says a lot of people were shocked that they listened.

All aircraft are on a 7 year paint cycle.

Tail 436 was delivered to CO on 25 June 2009. This is about exactly 7 years.

I'm a 33 Year United employee, All of this Paint job "Hooie" is just that." Hooie" !! We've got BIGGER fish to fry!!
We've got people Years overdue for contracts because management hasn't been handling business.
We're working with a LOUSY Maintenance information system, Near as bad reservations system.
All while patching holes in Dikes daily.
And all of THIS? just to get to a single platform we can call "Ground ZERO" !! And ??
Management is fiddling while Rome is Burning !!
Oscar is fighting inside and outside to get the airline "working" and the BOD are worrying about the Stock Voting of the employees.
Are you Kidding me? Stop the BS Get the contract people Secured in new contracts and let's get this show on the ROAD!!
If we had an all white paint scheme? What REAL Difference would it make as long as it was clean?
It's Not the name on the BOX !! It's the quality IN the BOX!!
A pretty paint job on a lousy operation is WORSE than no paint job at ALL!! Get the Quality Right?
I could paint the airplane the color of Dog Poop and people would FLOCK to fly with us!!
Clean up all the internals before we worry about the Externals.
We need to run a top shelf operation and do it because WE CAN!!
We tend to look to much backwards and not enough Forwards..
I hear some "Dimwits" at work STILL longing for the days of Gordon Bethune,
Why not for "Frank Lorenzo"?? Bethune was good WHY?? If he'd been that good?
He would have been recruited to turn around another Airline.
If we needed a REAL airline man?. We should have recruited Robert Crandall.. A man with KNOWN Expertise !!
We have Oscar Olivera, We need to fall in line behind HIM and get going toward Excellence
That's a leader you can Go to war with as a commander

I work with SHARES daily and have never had a major issue with it. AERO is getting more capable with every update and has only a few bugs left that impact regular operations. The only REAL issue, which there will probably never be a fix for, is having to split a record when putting someone on standby or doing an upgrade. But, please, keep up the claims of people who don't want to learn how to work with the tool they have.

You notice, United didn't make a big fanfare about the retrojet being painted onto a new plane. United also didn't make a big fanfare about the retrojet going away in the first place. Aviation nuts were the ones who took note of both events.

Mechanics have been jerked around for about five years now. Management told the IBT that if they agreed to resource utilization that they would be taken care of. It was the biggest lie ever told. I'm surprised there hasn't been a full on revolt by Tech Ops yet.

Back OT, I wish there were more retro jets to celebrate the heritage of the company. I don't think it's ever a bad thing.

I demonstrated why, it was a freaking awesome place to work and we all loved it!

Digging up the ancient past or focusing on all the negative that set it with the nightmare merger really doesn't change that .! I am sorry you never experienced working for a company with a great leader.

That's an amazingly bold assumption. You know it is entirely possible that there are other great "leaders" out there other than your beloved bethune. And many would certainly question your "great" label for him as well.

I was under the impression the entire UA/CO fleet was wearing the retro livery

None other than smisek himself took credit for the current 99% continental and 1% United livery. Totally non imaginary and a missed opportunity for a fresh start post UA/co entanglement.

It actually makes a lot of sense to keep the current livery for a little while longer. Coming from a CO guy, I agree that it is now looking a bit dated. I've liked every UA and CO livery that has existed, all were very well done and classy. It's time for something new, however. But I think we should keep the current livery until we have ironed out the kinks, have labor contracts in place for the rest of our work groups. I want the new branding to come out and say United is different, it's shaped by the past but no longer defined by the past troubles and merger pains. We need it to come out when we are ready to reflect the freshness of a new identity and customer service standard.

I don't have any inside knowledge if new branding is in the pipeline. I hope so, but I think it's wise to also wait just a bit longer because we still have more kinks to iron out internally.

On an opposite view a rebranding may speed things along.

Nothing involving the globe/meatball or tulip should be considered IMHO.

Not a fan of eurowhite aircraft but today's materials demand full paint and a lighter top reduces heat while on the ramp in sunshine. Darker lower half provides more of a contrast and can nicely pickup the tail and the vertical tip colors....(as well as easier to keep clean..grin). With the advances in decals there are possibilities that could be quite good....and cheaper/faster than paint and stencil.

Management is fiddling while Rome is Burning !!

Build a bridge and get over it already!

You do realize we have thousands of employees who focus on their respective individual jobs; you posit these challenges as if they're all mutually exclusive of painting an airplane. Very simple minded assertion, IMHO.

Fair enough it was, but based on the fact I have never seen you mention one? Since this is suppose to be a feel good trip down memory lane why don't you share!

Maybe so, but few of them would have worked for the man. You'll are more likely to find people who love Napoleon in Paris than Moscow.

With as many things as the globe is going on, some form of it will be around for awhile, even in a new livery.

Consumables are easily replaced... boarding pass stock, bag tags, napkins, etc.

Seat covers, signage, equipment labels, etc take a lot longer.

That's not to say that they couldn't decide in a year or two that a complete refresh complete with new emblem is needed, but it's unlikely. More likely is a complete overhaul based on the best version of the globe they can come up with.
Make something Idiot-proof, and the Universe will make a more inept idiot.
