Air WI Leaving MKE; UA Mainline Coming?

Thu Jun 09, 2016 10:07 pm

I saw there was a thread before that Air Wisconsin was shutting down MKE, but now I can't find it. I saw that UA was bringing mainline aircraft in. I was going to ask when that was going to happen because I can't see anything on the UA website search.

I see two mainline flights from MKE to DEN starting September 8th, and one mainline from MKE to ORD starting October 6th.

About time!

(Looks like DEN will have only those two mainlines from September 8th. ORD will still have plenty of Express.)

Air Wisconsin hasn't been a UAX carrier for about a decade now. Their role with UA has been doing UAX ground handling at certain stations, most (in)famously IAD.

A mainline flight between MKE and ORD has to be one of the shortest mainline flights in the U.S. correct?

ZW also handled SBN for years, but SBN is in the process of switching to United Ground Express.

FWA was once a ZW ground station as well, dating back even before the formation of the United Express network. Then FWA went to OO for a while, and has been with DGS for the past few years (to the point where DL and UA even share a bagroom and crew lounge at FWA).

Its a surprising upgrade to be sure, but UA also has mainline on ORD-MSN. Some of the ORD-MKE flights have also been upgraded to CR7, albeit there will now be less frequency.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

They've been moving to a higher capacity, lower frequency model for a while.

Currently, probably one of the shortest. this has been covered a few times before..a few quick examples come ti mind from years ago when some routes were CAB controlled. UA had a flight from SFO-OAK, about 12 miles or so. another old California route of short distance was VIS- BFL, about 65 miles..also UA in the 70's.

there were a number of international tag -on years ago such as BWI-PHL on TW as I recall..

Do a search and you'll discover more about it.

I thought I read that Air Wisky is only closing the maintenance base in MKE.... is there more to the equation? Are they still based up in ATW?

The maintenance base is not going anywhere, this is in relation to the United ground handling. HQ is still in ATW.

Yes. Back in the late 80's, even into the mid-90's, UA flew mainline into MKE out of ORD. And, believe it or not, a DC-10 depending on the schedule.

I flew a D13, 73A, 727, 72A over the years on that route.
