So Many Delta 757 Cabin Versions

Sat Jun 11, 2016 12:08 am

Per the Delta website there are 7 different cabin versions of the 757 flying, SeatGuru shows 10!

757-200-75A (Overhead TV)
757-200-75C (WIFI)
757-200-75D (WIFI, USB Power, AVOD, Satellite TV)
757-200-75G (WIFI)
757-200-75H (WIFI, USB Power, AVOD, Satellite TV)
757-200-757 (WIFI, Overhead TV)
757-200-75S (WIFI, USB Power, AVOD, Satellite TV, Flat beds in J)

Now obviously Delta is the biggest operator of 757s but does anyone know how many of each version there are currently in the fleet and how many if remain to upgrade with WIFI, AVOD, etc? Is it reasonable to expect a seat map for a no thrills 757 to be upgraded in 6 months?

Thanks!

Wow! And that's not including the four(?) versions of 757-300 that seatguru also includes... Why so many variants of 757?

The number 7 is quickly being whittled down. The H and D are the same, so that takes it down to 6. Yes the performance may be different, but not the inflight amenities. The -757 and A are moving to the D/H, which takes 2 more out. And the C is just for charter ops. So the plan is the H/D (same), G, and S for regular pax ops. And from the refurb thread, the G's will likely be converted to either one of the other options.

The 757-3 is different since the dimensions of the model are physically different.

Probably also because the fact that they have acquired frames that were originally with other airlines. NWA and TWA and mixed in with original Delta jets.

There is only one version of the 757-300 at DL, known as the 75Y.

Boy, do you have that right! It is as confusing to the crews as it is to the passengers. It gets really ugly when there is an equipment substitution and seats that were preassigned are no longer on the airplane.

Some 757's are in a special charter configuration for sports teams--DL has a long term contract for that. Some are gradually being put to sleep out in the desert (most if not all of the former NW 5500 series) and still DL will grab a few good ones if the price is right.

75D + 75H = refurb domestic 757. Config is identical, but the 75H have ETOPS. "757" and 75X will all either be refurb'd into 75D or retired. All the 75A were already converted into 75H.

75S = lie-flat international 757 (sometimes used on premium transcons).

75G = 5 late-build ex-Shanghai ETOPS 757s that just recently joined the fleet. This is a temporary confit using older Delta pieces. Assume they will be converted eventually to 75H or 75S.

75C = sports charter config. Not used in regular service.

There were also 75V (ex-ATA ETOPS, all retired) and 75M (ex-NW Interport, all converted to 75D/75H).

The OP is coming to this observation years late, after DL has retired some configs and refurbed others into the common seating H and D. It will be a big simplification once complete.

Seat Guru, of course, doesn't keep up.

Why people even mention the charter config in the context of seating configurations is curious. A ~70-passenger 757C is never, ever, going to be subbed for a 757D/H in scheduled passenger flight.

Thanks, this post has been super helpful and one of the posters put monthly updates on the fleet progress. Does anyone know if there is a similar forum for American Airlines? While there site shows only a domestic and international version of the 757 there is still numerous cabin configs out there.

Wasn't there also a 75N at one point as well?

Seat Guru used to be a really useful resource years ago, but it seems to have really fallen in quality as of late. Seat Guru seems to always be about a year behind the airlines, whereas most of the airlines (including DL) have gotten much better at posting up-to-date seat maps.

Yes, those were the ex-NW 5500 series domestic aircraft, which were among the oldest ships in the combined fleet and have all been retired for some time.

Delta has retired almost all of its 757s, from any source, built before 1992. The remaining stragglers will either be retired or put into the charter config (which has low utilization) very soon.

The post-1992 ships flying in the regular fleet will end up eventually in just two configurations: domestic 75D/75H (the difference being that 75H ships, all originally from NW's Hawaii and intra-Asia fleets, are ETOPS equipped) and international/premium 75S.

not really. as far as the cabin goes for PAX its
75H/75D. Both have had the 199 seat mod done and the cabins are the same. The H v D is just hawaii vs domestic. The H's are ETOPS the D's aren't. A passenger won't know the differences though
75S which is the lie-flat aircraft.
757 which will be converted into 75Ds or retired. IIRC only 10 or so of them left.
75Y which is the 757-300.

75A is gone. 75C is charter so unless you rent the airplane or play on a NBA/NHL team you won't see them.

The 75G are going to be NRT based so as a domestic flyer they aren't something anyone will need to worry about unless you catch the rare flight back to the US for hangar time. (sometimes they are ferries some times they are live)
