Re: What's Going On At RDU - Part 1

I think the next international service won't be another TATL or TPAC, but a Mexican flight. I could see AM doing well here with daily RDU-MEX considering the large Mexican population in NC and the huge DL presence here. I also think that a DL daily to San Jose would do quite well, since it would give techies a more convenient O&D option than the SFO flights.

Doesn't look like RDU got any new routes on the latest WN schedule extension. I guess status quo is good also... hopefully MSY will go daily at some point..

Read an article on Triangle Business Joirnal with the DO route planning saying the AUS upgrade was the beginning of RDU product upgrade. Wonder what is likely to come?? Thoughts? What I found interesting was he said 2018 new routes haven't been determined yet... must have meant new summer routes, right? Wouldn't spring routes already be announced? Anyway, interesting tha RDU buildup was due to its proximity to ATL but the station has grown into its own O&D base... check out Triangle Business Journal to read it. Would post but on my phone.. :)

Yup. Was always supposed to be that way. Now, on the TBJ source, Delta said they have not finalized 2018 additions/routes.. anyone think RDU will get any new routes or just aircraft upgrades only?

Delta is adding the 717 to one BOS-RDU rotation beginning in June. The routing is: RDU-AUS-RDU-BOS-RDU.

There are quite a few 717 going through RdU for a couple of months... I wonder if they are gonna base a few here for a couple of months cause some don't appear to go through other hubs

"Virgin America execs, in town Friday for the brand’s debut at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, say San Francisco could be just the beginning"
"say they’re optimistic that more could be in store in the Triangle"

"“Between now and the end of 2019, you’ll see the Virgin America brand around the system,” Stich says, noting that the goal is to take “the best of both” and join forces on a customer-focused brand. “Our goal right now is to be the premier airline of the West Coast.”

"And that could could have varying impact over the next two years, from adding flights in key cities such as Portland, Oregon, and San Jose, California – both of which are on RDU’s nonstop wish list – to increasing the frequency of existing service."

"RDU officials also hinted at even more non-stop flights being added in the near future."

If, by some chance, PDX and SCJ and SAN came on line.. that would round out all the West coast destinations needed for RDU.. but I’m just happy to see another airline...

With all the recent additions in the past couple years to RDU, I'm most surprised by American's inactivity here.

American has service to every hub but Phoenix.. I think they feel they are well covered.. which is okay. I could only see them adjusting frequency or gauging aircraft size.. which is what they are typically doing... To me, it’s WN stagnation that has me surprised... I would think they would see other opportunities but I guess not...

Was just looking st DL route map for RDU and was just wondering if any of these possibilities could be filled by DL to fill in their route gaps:

MSY (G4 and WN - 3 weekly)
DFW (AA)
MEM (return? - unserved)
MCI (F9 starting 2018)
ORD (AA, [email protected], and UA - 12? daily)
SYR (unserved)
YYZ (AC 3 daily)
CHS (unserved)
NAS (return - unserved)

MSY is a long shot with two carriers on it, and overflying ATL. ORD, MEM, and DFW are most likely with LAS. You'll see WestJet/Porter do YYZ/YTZ before DL. PDEW to CHS and SYR is too low to warrant service. MCI can't support two carriers. It struggled when ExpressJet had its independent flying there. NAS hasn't been able to sustain consistent service since AA hub days.

Still hoping Alaska puts resources into adding PDX, SAN, and SJC soon (next 12 months). With that many flights, they would house their own employees. SJC will be a long shot with SFO service coming online. Maybe an LAX could pop up as well.

American continues to lose market share. They had an opportunity to make RDU a profitable focus city again and served it to Delta on a platter. BOS and AUS were perfect markets for AA clientele and they ignored it. AA says the yield to PHX is too low to bring in service, even if flights are full.

Southwest also already serves DAL nonstop from RDU, in addition to the AA DFW-RDU nonstop service.

Somehow it didn’t get mentioned that Southwest is adding CUN Saturday service. This will put three carriers (AA &DL) on the route on Saturdays. Also, I’m assuming WN will have to tow their aircraft from T2 when it arrives.

Also, DL and G4 have dropped their plans to begin SJU service.

So, been kinda low key here so I thought I would post RDUs wish list for domestic and international and see how you all gauge the possibility. I will first state that I think some of them are pretty low possibilities, but.. it will be interesting to see what the arm chair CEOs think. So, here we go...

Domestic..

10. Memphis - 56 ppl
9. Orange County - 56ppl
8. Milwaulkee - 59 ppl
7. Buffalo - 61 ppl
6. Sacramento - 63 ppl
5. San Antonio - 82 ppl
4. San Jose - 82 ppl
3. Portland - 86 ppl
2. San Juan - 86 ppl
1. San Diego - 144 ppl

International

3. Punta Cana - 33 ppl
2. Montego Bay - 36 ppl
1. Mexico City - 54 ppl

So I see SAN on AS and SAT, SJU on DL. PDX maybe on AS.. MKE and BUF on a CR7? Would love to see MEX on something.

Anyway.. thoughts?

Southwest could possibly add RDU-MCI nonstop service since Southwest still has significant market share at RDU, even with the DL focus city operation at RDU, since Kansas City is one of the few markets where Southwest Airlines has over 50% market share, since Southwest has been at RDU for over 18 years, since Southwest has been at MCI for over 35 years, and since Southwest and Delta both already serve Delta's LAX, MSP, ATL, and LGA hubs plus BOS nonstop from MCI.

Southwest could possibly go to SNA, MKE, SMF, SAT, SJC, and SAN nonstop from RDU if the demand is really there. In addition, Sacramento is one of the few markets where Southwest Airlines has over 50% market share, and Southwest is actually going to be expanding at SMF in Spring 2018 with new nonstop service from SMF to AUS, MSY, MCO, STL, and SJD. Southwest has also been expanding at San Jose in order to better compete against Alaska Airlines, who is expanding at SJC, SFO, LAX, and SAN, and Southwest is going to be starting nonstop service from SJC to ABQ, BOI, HOU, MSY, MCO, SJD, GEG, and STL in Spring 2018. Southwest is also adding nonstop service from OAK to IND, MSP, and MCO starting in Summer 2018 and extending OAK-EWR nonstop service to year round starting in Spring 2018 in order to better compete against Alaska and Virgin America nonstop service from SFO to EWR, IND, MSP, and MCO.

The Research Triangle and the San Francisco Bay Area are both major high-tech hubs in the United States, and Southwest could add nonstop service from RDU to both SJC and OAK in order to give Southwest Airlines customers in the San Francisco Bay Area easier access to the Research Triangle and in order to better compete against VX/AS SFO-RDU nonstop service. Greater Austin is also a major high-tech hub in the United States, and Southwest could possibly add RDU-AUS nonstop service in the future if the demand is really there for additional nonstop service to RDU from AUS, even though RDU-AUS already has nonstop service on both Delta and Frontier.

I see SAN next with either AS or DL, and PDX after that.

Internationally, I see MEX with AM or DL and maybe, maybe YUL with AC.

I know at least in reference to San Diego, that number is one way. However, for those other cities, I'm not entirely sure, but I am going to assume one way as well based on previous figures.

Not to mention they're adding a Saturday-only service to Cancun starting in June. While SW certainly could add more destinations, they have RDU covered fairly well.

I know MSY is technically served by G4, but it's less than daily. Surely MSY has to be on that list.

Nope.. I guess 2 carriers on it, even if not daily, fulfills the airport wishes..

I guess if there was weekly service to Punta Cana and Montego Bay, that would be good too...

I wonder what Airlines besides OneJet did not start service because of a disagreement in fees.. other airports appear to have a come and serve us where RDu may be the come serve us.. no substitutions?

I wonder why CUN can get service, but Punta Cana and Montego Bay can’t from RDU? Lots of Midwest cities get Caribbean charter flights. Is there really that many more people wanting to go to those places in the Midwest than in the Triangle? I’m really wondering and not bad mouthing the Midwest. Even when USA3000 was in business, there was no flights to the Caribbean from RDU. Just odd IMO. Thoughts?

I meant to include WN and its less-than-daily service to MSY. Probably still the most likely candidate to start daily service in the future, but we've been saying that for years.

DL has no reason to start SAN. They only fly to the hubs out of SAN. Alaska will be the best option as more planes are delivered.

But they do not fly only to hubs (or hubs and focus cities) out of RDU. That said, I do think AS is more likely than DL to start this route.

Agreed. Speaking of aircraft, how many 739s does AS have left on order? I think their expansion will be slowing down a little bit, no?

I would second this, but include the main reason is that DL can fill a plane, but not profitably. CVG-SAN was running +90% loads when it was cut, the fares were just too low. The same would happen on such as route from RDU. AS is much more realistic IMO.

5 -900ERs are left on order plus 32 mixed of MAX 8 and MAX 9s. Also have not gotten out of the A320neo order quite yet.

Looks like OneJet may want to give RDU another chance.. they appear to want to start BUF service. Thoughts?

Other destinations onejet serves are ALB, CVG, CMH, BDL, IND, SDF, MKE, BNA, OMA, PVD, PIT, RIC.

Of the routes they serve, I could see ALB, MKE, PIT, and SDF (finally).

Would love to see them do some leisure destinations from RDU.. AVL, CHS, MQI, SAV, ACY

onejet tries RDU again

Great to see.

Also, while it appears that Delta removed the 717 from RDU-AUS (replacing it with a CR9), DL is adding 3/x daily 717 service on RDU-BOS. Pretty impressive.

So Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays....

So I was thinking of RDu and it’s heydays during the AA hub so thought I would throw a little bit of data around, see what you guys thought.

During AA hub, it’s peak daily departures was in 1992 with about 211 flights. Add in the other service, and RDU was over 500 daily flights in and out of RDU.

So I decided to see what was missing from them to now...

CAK, ALB, AVL, AGS, BDA, BUF, CHS, CRW, CHO, CAE, DAB, FAY, FLO, GCM, LWB, GSO, PGV, MDT, HHH, JAX, OAJ, ISO, TYS, LEX, ISP, LYH, MLB, MYR, NAS, EWN, SWF, PHF, ORD, PNS, RIC, ROC, STX, SXM, STT, SJU, SRQ, SAV, SYR, TRI, PBI, AND ILM

Of those RDU has added that was not there during that time include..

SEA, MSY, LAX, MSP, SLC, AUS, IND, MCI, LAS, DEN, IAH, SFO, Trenton..

So I’m looking at what we didn’t have and wonder the viability of any of the following from returning:

ALB, AVL, BDA, BUF (onejet), CHS, GCM, JAX, LEX (onejet), ISP, NAS, SWF, ORF, (STX, SXM, STT, SJU - charter?), SAV, PBI

Thoughts?

I personally would love to see a CapeAir like airline come in for some of the regional airports
Aiming High and going far..

IMO, JAX/PBI could be Sat-only flights on DL, but JAX is probably to close for G4 to try it.

It’ll never happen, but Silver coming in would be a great opportunity for a lot of these routes. AVL, MYR, ROC, SDF, JAX, and CHS would have a chance at making money.
