A380- Ugly Hulk Or Beutiful Bird?

Sat Feb 10, 2001 8:43 am

What do you think of the A380's exterior design? Personaly i'm not giving it my vote as it doesn't have that beuty that the 747-400 or the A330/340 have. Maybe it's just me and i guess i'll get used to and start to like it but at the moment it's not all that.
What your opinion?

My opinion: At least the Concorde was a good looking white elephant. This baby's gonna lose a buttload of money and it's ugly.

Hard to say until we see it flying. Like a lot of aircraft, it may look better in certain colorschemes than in others.

It is unlikely it will have the elegance of the 747 or A340 but then again the 777 is hardly a beauty to look at (the 773 looks downright ugly) but is still a very good plane

Interesting you think that... I think the 777 is the most beautiful and graceful bird out there.... with her long gulled wingspan, and the pronounced upward curving of the wings when in flight. The large fuselage diameter makes her look very athletic.

What do you think is ugly about the 777? No insults intended, just curious.

A380- too big and stocky, would be better off launching that thing at Cape Canaveral than any international airport.

777- just too big for a twin engine plane IMHO. The engines are disproportionally large. The whole thing looks like a fat sausage with wings, just add the sauerkraut, mustard ,ketchup and buns.

Exactly, very humurous remarks!
Well i can see that iv'e stured up a coldron of comments about the A380, most of them being negative, which in my view is fair enough but it might look alright in VS new colours? And all that S**t about Gyms and resteraunts! what airline would put a gym in instead of a few hundred revenue making seats, well?

It sure doesn't get my vote, is looks very ugly to me. All it is is a Beluga with an extra pack of steroids.

Besides, Airbus has to sell, what, like 500 of these things to even make a profit? LOL

As I said, the 777 is a great plane but unfortunately it looks like a 767 that has been fed steroids. I can cope with the 772 but the extra length of the 773 makes the whole thing look completely unbalanced.

Stretches of airframes tend to do this, I also find the 753 and A321 unattractive and am undecided about the A346. Surprisingly I find the stretched 738s and 739s the best looking of the 737 family and the 763 more attractive than than 762. I guess it all comes down to proportion.

I´m 100% with you, Tullamarine!

The A380 will hardly be a true beauty like the all-time-top-classic, the B747. But I think the Airbus "whale" will still be one of the best-looking aircraft. Its shear size will make it look stunning! But I´m sure it will lack the timeless elegance of the "Queen of the Sky" from Seattle.

Your words about the 777 are exactly what I think too, the 777-200 is not bad, actually the best-looking twin together with the A330-200. But the 777-300 is really a ugly fat sausage, a tasteless kind of "Photoshop"-experiment that never should have seen the light of day.
But 4 well-balanced engines can help look a similar over-stretched airplane, the A340-600 look alright in comparison.

What do you think they thought of the first 747s?

The 747 is a very strange looking airliner, it's only because it has been around a long time that people are used to it and can appreciate the aircraft without their eyes being drawn to the "hump" The A380 may appear ugly because it's totally different from anything you've ever seen - give it a bit of time, in a few years it will look completely normal, and you won't give it a second glance - just like the 747 now...

If the A380s on steroids, the B747s got a big swelling on it's back that needs medical attention!

I think it will take a little getting used to the A380's design.

But, if you give it the right livery, it may actually LOOK good. I think the VS and QF liveries on the A380 will probably look extremely good.

Now, I wonder will SQ paint one of their A380's as a Star Alliance "Logo Jet"? Now that would stand out in a big way (quite literally).

767ALLTHEWAY,
I'm sure the people at Airbus are glad to have your positive support.

On a personal note;
I think you need to have a serious think about whether you are really intersted in Aviation at all. I can't honestly believe that someone would really wish that the most innovative and exciting aircraft since the 747/Concorde never leaves the ground or has some sort of accident. That is, someone with a genuine interest in aviation.

Who made the aircraft doesn't matter and I'm positive you wouldn't be making mindless comments if this were a Boeing design.

Your attitude is immature, and in very bad taste. I hope you never have the misfortune to be involved in a genuine airbourne emergency - to wish that on other people smacks of of low intelligence, low moral standards or both.

As someone who is making a career out of flying, I hope I never have the misfortune to carry you as a passenger on one of my flights, regardless of where the aircraft was built.

Grow up.

What a boring topic. All the Boring , sorry Boeing fans saying how ugly the plane is. Have you seen the PICTURE of the 747X !!!, thats ugly.

The A380-800 is different, not ugly. As far I see it there are two great birds in the sky. One from the states and one from europe.

The L1011 and Concorde. I would also give high marks to the 707.

Ugly is the A300, A310, 757 and 767.

This is only what I think in the same way your posts are what you think.

OK, I give good marks to America and Europe, but I also give negative marks to America and Europe.

Beauty is in the eyes of beholder...whenever a new product is out, it would always either repel or attract the people.

BUT you cannot ignore A380 as it is being in process of translating from blueprint to real life aircraft. Nobody could imagine how it looks like under blue sky and on gray tarmac.

I really cannot wait to see first SIA A380 at Singapore's Changi International Airport Terminal 3, no matter how ugly it looks. In my eyes, it is one of the great machines in 21st Century ever built.  Smile

Hey Boys....there is never gonna be a consensus on this matter...some like the 757, 777, 767, some dont ... I DO!!!. No biggie. I like them all, especially the 757 sleek look.

Most people will agree that the 747 is the most bautiful plane in service now, and there should be no room for critizism, apart form its sheer beauty and style, it is THE plane that has launched us into the modern aviation era and thanks to it that we can travel form LAX to SYD in less than 20 hours for as little as $600, or go to London for the weekend for $350.

Personelly, i dont like any Airbuses. The prposed new one's look (A380) is far from innovative.

I woluld like it if those people who want the airbus launched soooo bad to stop the 747 bashing, and thank it and the people at Boeing instead.

The A380 is so round and cute, and it's got a shipload of power. It's so round it almost looked like air ship. And it's size mignificient. And sounds like you people are bunch of jealous Boeing fans. I bet all you want to do now is bash me.

The A380's flight deck is located on the lower level, so i think that on the higher level, windows should be placed above the flight deck to give passengers a front outside view of whats ahead of them. What do you guys think about that? it would make the A380 look better on the outside too in my opinion

I don't mind the A380s shape, I but I think the position of the cockpit windscreen is too low on the nose, and isn't that because it is on it's own level? if the cockpit was on the top deck it would look better......incidently the 772 is my favourite aircraft.

I see no reason to knock the A380. It is an important breakthrough in aviation an no other manufacture wants to take the risk that Airbus is making.

I like Boeing and Airbus equally. It seems like Boeings creative days are behind them. All there jets except the 747-400 today are twins. The A340 is a newer quad engine design and the A380 looks like nothing you see at the airport today.
Boeing fans need to give Airbus some credit for doing somthing different.

Just wait for the day the 380 double stretch will take to the air, featuring an 9 hole golf course on the upper level and a race track on its lower level. With its long fuselage that will be a beauty.  Innocent

The only thing I don't like about is that the cokpit is on the first deck. I read that the pilot can steer better, but the 747 has the upper deck, and looks great.

What makes the A380 ugly? Its shape....maybe.
Now what makes the A380 pretty? It's introducing new standards in the aviation's world. Airbus just launched something brand new that will soon become the reference in the industry, a real new airplane for the 21st century. Just wait to see it parked next to a 747 and you will understand what I mean.

I like the A380 very much. It doesn't have the elgence of the A340, but it would be number 2 in my list.

At least it isn't as boring as the B767/B777.

A380 looks ugly in pictures, but I think the beauty of it will be in its scale....

777-200/300 are BEAUTIFUL aircraft, very graceful. Just like the A340, in my opinion the most elegant and graceful bird flying today.

Does it really matter? I mean, an airliner is a functional object, not an object of art. If a well-designed and capable aircraft is good-looking, it's a bonus.
We'll all get used to the sight of A380s just as we did the 747.
Anyway, they all look the same on the inside! Smile I think the A380 looks neither ugly or beautiful - it looks like a mightily impressive and capable machine.
I like the idea of windows at the front of the upper deck but I fear those seats would be reserved for the FC section - the likes of me will never get a pilot's eye view!

Sure, the 747 looks wonderful - powerful, yet elegant. The 777 with those 2 enormous engines looks different but very purposeful (and, IMO, good looking!). The A340 looks good too. But come on guys, there's nothing - absolutely nothing - that comes close to the majestic beauty of Concorde!

You may have noticed that I'm neither a Boeing 'fan' nor an Airbus 'fan' (I'll leave the petty bickering of "My plane's better than your plane" to the execs of those 2 companies.) I simply like to fly.
