Emirate's 777 Engine Failure

Hi,
does anybody can tell me the probable cause -or investigation status- of the Trent 800 series Emirate's 777 engine failure at Melbourne on January 31th, 2001? I mean, I am trying to know if it was due to a structural or maitenance failure rather than an external object swallow.

Brilliant photos! I've never seen damage like that on a wide-chord fan engine. Looks like a fan blade separation caused the damage? The forces involved must have been tremendous, but the engine seems to have performed like it was designed to in that situation.

It shook a few thinks on the outer fan case as well. Oil tank was sheared
off it's mounts and the kevlar containment ring was a bit bulged. But nothing
escaped thru the fan case tho.

Rmm,
thank you again. It works, finally I saw the photos. They are great. It seems too extrange to me... it looks like the whole duct was loose, shaking around and rubbing against the fan. And those holes in the middle of the blades' bodies. Does ATSB publish this type of incidents / investigations?

The fan did chew out all of the abradable liner. There were puncture marks
in some of the blades. The ATSB does publish reports but I think it would
be a few months off.
