RE: Your Top 5 Or 10 Of Worst Airline Paintschemes

Thu Mar 01, 2001 8:03 am

01.- SOUTHWEST
The old scheme is boring and ugly... the new scheme is HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE!!!!!

02.- LUXAIR
I don't like that scheme at all... it's so old style (maybe they don't have enough imagination and creativity)

03.- VIRGIN BLUE
What a crap!!!!!!!!!

04.- AMERICAN TRANS AIR
What a shame... it looks like a cheap hawaiian souvenir (sorry my hawaiians friends, nothing against your beautiful land ok?)

05.- SERVIVENSA
From the caribbean... a lot of choices, but they decided to do the worst they could do

06.- BWIA
Both liveries (old & new) are something really strange don't you think so?

07.- AMERICAN AIRLINES
Boring, boring, boring, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

08.- EL AL ISRAEL
The new one... What's happening in Israel? You have a lot of light over there!!!!! (so bold for me)

09.- FINNAIR
The old one & the new one... really boring (maybe for the snow...)

10.- AEROLINEAS ARGENTINAS
A lot "Iberia style"... & don't forget this: Iberia is the worst airline in the world!!!!!

1)Southwest new (Dear god...do those colors not clash)
2)Southwest old (...yet again...dear god...)
3)Valujet (Yes I know they went out of business, but anything with valu slapped across the side of it can not be good)
4)United (Oh look...its satan's plane!)
5)Im going to take some hits on this...swissair...blahhhhh

Now...whats the problem with delta's new livery? Ill be the first to admit its not as good as the original widget tail...but it looks really snazzy on some planes. If you want to bash one of their livery go for the middle one...its was so dull.

I think every livery you have listed Chepos, except for maybe Air Afrique is great. The new liveries airlines are coming out with are more modern looking than the old cheatline designs. I think KLM's is okay, but Air Canada's old, United's old and a few others all look very very ancient, it was wise of them to start changing their colors, but I think Aeroflot, Iberia, and some of those airlines need to ditch the cheatlines.

It is too business oriented and boring!

Virgin Blue

Thu Mar 01, 2001 11:00 am

WN Boy

To understand why Virgin Blue has red aircraft, you have to understand why Virgin Blue is called Virgin Blue.

In Strine a person with red hair is commonly known as Bluey.

By calling Virgin Blue, Virgin Blue, Branson has shown he has a sense of humour, and is willing to fit into our market.

Cheers

Here is my list in no particular order

1.) Air Tran- Valujet's design in different colors which I don't prefer.

2.) China Eastern- Very out-dated and poor tail design

3.) Dragon Air- To much white and text looks unorganized. With such a cool name they could amzing scheme!

4.) EgyptAir- Again to much white and poor choice of colors

5.) Bahamasair- Yet again to much white. Does not reflect the Bahama Islands tropical colors.

6.) Olympic Airways- Looks very out-dated and boring. It could be much improved easily

WILD CARD) Southwest Airlines- It has just been changed although I have not seen it in person yet. The old design is still very dominate so I will add it. It's my opinion as the worst scheme in airline history.

Chepos,

You got it. There's no chance to name the "Top 5" of the worst airline schemes... you know, what's the difference between Lufthansa, Finnair, Air France, Garuda, South African, Air Canada, etc.? The tail colours and style of titles. Wow - all-white and some colours on the tail. I'd say: all these for the waste disposer!

1. United : Too dark, too boring

2. JAL : Time for a change. They only changed the font, not the design.

3. Southwest (new) : Blue + Desert colour = Horrible

4. Air Afrique : Totally boring, playing with the background of the colour with their A332.

5. China Airlines : The "Flower" looks like 5 pieces of "Red meat"...Yuck.

6. Korean Air : What does this airline have to do with the ying-yang scheme.

7. China Eastern : What the heck is that? (with the white thing)

8. Royal Nepal : seems like they don't have creative brain.

9. American Airlines : the design is too simple

10. Transaero : Hate it

Worst
Iberia(need I say more??)
Air New Zealand(the 'Pacific Wave' is faded)
SAS(the lettering on the side is hard to read from a distance)
Delta(the original) I've hated it since I began spotting, it looked dated in the eighties.
Hawaiian....Pink Red & Silver....yuck
Olympic....I've seen newer looking Model T Fords
I dislike cheatlines, but I hate the underdone look of many of the newest liveries.

I've very sorry BUT, I disagree with almost ALL of you.

Delta - I think that Delta's livery is beautiful, especially in real life, THAT TAIL IS STRIKING!!!!!

AA - Come on you guys. Could you imagine the skies without the good old silverbirds?!?!? NO WAY!!!!!

Southwest - I love both of Southwest paintjobs. There are very original and unusual, that's good these days. Everything is odd today you know!

Euro White-Trash - I LOVE mostly white paintjobs!!!!! Very clean, suffisticated, and professional looking!!!!

My 10 worst are:
1. United - Look like hell! (Too dark)
2. USAirways - Same reason.
3. America West - Just plain old dumb looking. Hate the green and orange. YUCK!
4. Cameroon - No comment!
5. SAS(NC) - They could have at least used white, instead of brown white! UGLY!
6. Malaysia - The grey is WAY too dark!
7. Sun Country(OLD-OLD) - UGLY!
8. Air Canada - There is one exception, ACA, they could have just painted the whole plane white!
9. Iberia - TOO bright!
10. Air China(OLD) - Too grey and white.

Ok, I can't resist!

1. America West - When I think of the American west, the first color I think of is... Teal?

2. Virgin Atlantic - They had a classic livery, one that was truly unique, then decided "Hey! Let's chop it up and throw in a nasty silver too!"

3. Lufthansa - The German's can be a bit more creative. Their planes are too bland to represent that country that is anything but bland.

4. Delta - The old new was a nice update of the original. It looked a bit newer and clean. This new one says to me, paint is expensive, and we are cheap.

5. US Airways - The fake American flag is ghastly. Other than that I like it, but I can't get past it, replace it with a star, anything!

6. Air Canada - See Delta.

7. American - I love the airline, and the livery is a classic, but it's time for an update. It just isn't right that the 707 carried the same livery as their 777.

8. Mesaba / Express I - That's a whole lot of red.

9. British Airways - Stick with the world tails. You are, after all, the WORLD'S Favourite Airline.

10. Alitalia - LONG overdue for an update.

On a side note, although some say United and Continental are boring, I think they are very professional looking and represent comanies that are serious (more CO than UA in my opinion) about providing good service.

1. Air France: very bland, feel free to throw in a little color.
2. Korean Air: maybe I'm basing this more on their horrible safety record  Sad
3. USAir: improved, better than the old bare metal c/s.
4. Air Canada: bland, can barely see the maple leaf on the tail.
5. Alitalia: all of you are right about the black dot on the nose.

I cannot say that I have any least favourite paintschemes although some are quite boring. I disagree with those who dislike AC, CO and UA - all of those paintschemes are really neat and give a powerful impact of professionalism on the part of the airlines. Those are really attractive paintschemes.

As for BWIA, well I realize that its new scheme from 1999 has turned off some. I like it though - it was a welcome change from the old livery which, although it was attractive, did become very dated and needed a change. To see one of its planes fly by with a backdrop of clear blue sky is a really great sight indeed - the green and gold harmonizing on the fuselage. It is very striking and it suits the 737NGs better than the old scheme (which was worn by a 73G it leased for 1 year) -now THAT looked strange!

I think that Iberia's scheme, while also dated, does reflect the national colours and the vibrance and passion of its nationality, Spain. It does the country great justice in this regard. Iberia and TAP seem so complementary, like the nations themselves - the yellow and red of one contrasting with the green and red of the other but together looking great.

Trintocan.

Airmale is there any paint job you like?
As for me I defend NWA's, and AA's paintjob. The AA "Silverbird" livery is an Icon and NWA's Red/Grey/Dark Blue/White paint looks good.

Here are some liveries that I don't really like:

1. Southwest's (WN) new livery. There's WAY too much blue, and the color clash with the rest of the colors of the plane is a bit too much to bear.

2. British Midland's (BD)'s new "BMI" livery. Gawd, talk about tacky! The new livery has way too many "busy" details and just looks bizzare compared to the older BD livery.

3. Frontier's (F9) new livery for the A319's. The implementation of the "billboard" livery just looks strangely naff on the A319.

4. The current Lufthansa (LH) and Air France (AF) liveries. There's WAY too much white, and it looks too much like an ACMI leaser plane.

Here are some liveries I do like:

1. United's (UA) current "stealth" look. It took a bit of getting used to, but the current UA livery looks especially good on the 747-400 and 777-200.

2. American's (AA) current polished metal livery. It looked great when it was introduced in 1968, and still looks great even on their latest planes (737-800 and 777-200ER). And AA's livery is easily modified to "retro" liveries like the 1959 and 1964 "Astrojet" liveries, which also look great.  Smile

3. Virgin Atlantic's (VS) current livery. It looks quite good, especially close up.

4. Sun Country's (SY) new livery being first introduced on their 738's. It is a superbly implemented, and the way they did a larger version of the SY logo in a lighter shade of blue on the front fuselage looks especially good.

5. Singapore's (SQ) livery. A classic when unveiled in 1972 at the formation of SQ, and still looks good even on the upcoming A380-800.

6. EasyJet's (U2) livery. It may supposedly look naff, but if you understand the corporate culture behind U2, the livery actually makes sense and is one of the few examples where a "billboard" livery looks reasonably good.

1. Aeroflot: even though they got the new tail why do they still use the same ugly cheatline and hammer and sickel logo?
2. Air India: very unique and interesting livery in the 1970s!
3. Southwest Airlines: just plain bad taste.
4. SAS: all wrong the viking ship of the 70s was much better bring it back in a more modern form.
5. Air China: like Aeroflot it's just another boring Communist style livery.
6. Royal Air Maroc: outdated.
7. TAP Air Portugal: stuck in the 1980s, I'm waiting for a change.
8. Sinapore Airlines: great airline, but it's also stuck in the 80s, just change the typeface and slightly alter the tail.
9. Alitalia: very outdated and what's with the dot on the nose?
10. Iberia: it would be nice if they painted the entire AC in a unique livery using these colours.

Sat Mar 03, 2001 2:44 am

I think I've seen my top worse and top best each listed twice on here  Smile

ok, my top worse liveries (in no particular order)

EasyJet - orange?

SAS - can't read airline titles, different fonts on tail and on side of plane, red engines??, bland fuselage colour. Their old dragon stripe was the ultimate best... it said we are the Vikings, it screamed Scandinavia..

American - basically it's ok but just update it a little.. the retro looks are cool though.

Iberia - the colours are fine but the look is dated.. time to update it.

Aerolineas Argentineas - just boring.

Olympic - very dated look. Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in the world... show it on your planes somehow..

Aeroflot - extremely dated look

Malaysia - for an airline coming from such a tropical country they have the most cold colours of any airline in Southeast Asia... add some colour, Malaysia must be an exciting and beautiful country - show it off!

Asiana - what the heck does all this mean? Ugly colour, strange stripes and a meaningless symbol.. I'm confused.

Southwest - it's amazing how they can take an ugly brown aircraft and actually make it worse by adding blue.

Generally though, any airline with it's name on the tail shows a lack of originality (PIA, SAS)... bland all white fuselages (Garuda, Lufthansa, Swissair, Delta) with basically interchangeable tails also show a lack of originality.. Large airline titles on the side of fuselage (Avensa LTU etc) look cheap.

Some of the retro looks have been the most original things to hit the skies lately. Other airlines had better schemes than they do after the updated them (Varig, Air new Zealand)... often a good update on a basically good scheme never hurts... just something to keep it fresh is needed. (American?, Iberia, Alitalia? Olympic?)

Okay, here's mine:

1.Air France: Nothing against this airline, but the planes are too white and dirty.

2.United: Yes, I agree it's dull and depressing.

3.Western Pacific: A flying advertising machine.

4.Sabena: Boring and no creativity

5. Iberia: Old 70's look

6.Aerolineos Argentinas: Again old ugly 70's look

7.America West old livery: Disgusting dirty look; cheap, too!

And yes, some of those theme liveries above are a bit much; too busy! They take away the beauty of the aircraft!

Jiml1126, I disagree about Korean Air. I think their livery is very nice, and find it soothing to watch those light blue beauties climb out.

I was going to put United and Air France.
United is starting to grow on me and Air France was the first to have the white body with painted tail decades ago. So I forgive Air France and I am glad that United isn't white with painted tail.
United does look too much like a military plane.

Now that 70s is cool!  Big thumbs up

My ten most hated airline liveries to date:

10. Ameria West (new)
9. Southwest (old)
