KE Stops Flying Into Christchurch

Thu Mar 01, 2001 8:09 am

Korean Air has stoped flying into Christchurch due to poor load factors.
The service to Seoul first started out with a MD-11 then a mix of MD-11 and 747-400, then the 747-400 and late last the 777-200ER with the 777-300 making a appearance a couple of times.
This is a sad time for me as I always enjoyed seeing Korean Air's livery.

Always amazed that KE flew a couple of times a week on this route to Christchurch. Will they still be maintaining their current frequencies to christchurch?

This leaves SQ, QF and FJ as the only intl carrier s into CHC. (or do Polynesian fly there too?). I remember at what one time CHC also had Thai and BA, and Air New Zealand direct from CHC to Fiji-Honolulu-Lax and to Perth and Hobart.

It is sad when airlines do pull out of cities .
As far as I know BR is not pulling out of AKL.
TG and BA serving CHC I sure didn't know that, must have been a fare few years ago as BA pulled out of AKL at least 6-7 years ago.

TG flew there sometime around 89-91 with a weekly BKK-CHC-AKL-BKK DC10 routing.
And BA flew till about 1990 on a weekly LHR-middle east stop-Singapore-Perth-CHC-AKL-Perth-Singapore-
Middle ease stop-LHR routing with a 747.

Only two airlines are going out of NZ. KE is not going out of NZ. They will operate to AKL and then passengers who want to connect to Christchurch can on AirNZ.

KE and NZ have been doing this for some time now.
When AirNZ gave up Seoul in 1996, they started to put there passengers on KE. And still do this. They are a feeder for Korean Air flights all around NZ.

Hope this Helps.

The reason that PH have "Suspended" their operations to MEL/WLG is because they have wet leased their aircraft to Solomon Islands.

There is a strong chance the "suspended" flights will be re-entered into service later this year

I guess the market for CHC is much like ones at ADL in Aus and Penang in Malaysia or Sapporo in Japan or Barcelona in Europe.... Am I right?

Well, Christchurch is New Zealand's second largest city (pop of somewhere between 400,000-600,000, I cant remember exactly, but there is a national Census on Tuesday, hopefully in a few months the exact figure will be available.). Christchurch is basically a gateway to the South Island of New Zealand. This island has many ski resorts and other tourist attractions. However, most tourist packages involve both Islands, and go through Auckland. Business-wise, Auckland again would be more lucrative. Still, it's nice to have a second large International Airport in NZ.

With Korean gone the only other international carriers into Christchurch are: Air New Zealand with 747-400, 767-300Er, 767-200ER and 737-300.
QANTAS 767-300ER and 737-300.
Singapore Airlines A340-300.
Air Pacific 737-700 and 737-800.
Eva Air flies in with a charter service dueing the summer months.

I didn't know there was that large of a market out of CHC. Now, I think SQ might pull out and have psx go to AKL then on to a SQ744 and free up an A343.

They wouldn't do this as it is a joint flight operated by AirNZ sometimes and SQ as well!!

Qantas no longer flies any 747's to CHC.
I also wouldn't be surprized if SQ pulls out of CHC within the next year or so and Air NZ would go back to daily 763's from CHC to SIN, or otherwise an increase of flights to AKL from SIN and as SQ codeshare on some NZ domestic services passengers could transfer from SQ
to Air NZ at AKL.
I do hope they don't pull out but you never know.

Scott.
