How Much Flying Time Do We Have?

Sun Mar 18, 2001 1:14 pm

Here's a question for all of the pilots out there. As a group, how much combined flying time and years experience do we have? I'm curious to see what we end up with. Please be honest with your "guestimates". I'll start the ball rolling - I've got 35 years and 13,000 hours.

I've added the times that the people posted to this question in the "Non-Aviation" forum. Our totals now are at 28,000 hours and 83 years! I know that this is a respectable amount of time, but there are a lot of other people out there who have a lot of experience.

And how much flying time left if the industry does not seriously start looking for alternatives to solid fuel propulsion...

Private Pilot's License

4 years/ 207 hours (I don't know if that's correct, because my logbook is such a mess owing to an instructor I had that I later learned couldn't find his arse with a flashlight!).

This is starting to get interesting now. We're up to 329 years and 127,000 hours. If some of the high-time airline guys would chime in I bet we could hit a million flight hours.

This makes 336 years and 130,000 hours. It looks like we're starting to run out of steam. We've yet to hear from many of the "professed" airline pilots out there.

It has been my experience that asking a professional pilot how many hours he/she has is akin to asking how long is his "Special Purpose" or her "First" Measurement.

All I can say is that when asked how many hours I have, my only answer is always: "Enough".

Buff...
I agree with you. My opinion is that once a pilot has "been around the block" a time or two he/she has the necessary experience, or if I understand you correctly, "enough" to be a safe and competent pilot. I've seen pilots that have been "around the block" enough times with 3,000 hours; others I've known have had 5 times that amount and weren't there yet. All I was interested in is seeing just how much total experience we as a group can come up with among ourselves. 500,000 or a million hours? I've tried to gently nudge the high-time professionals out there to participate, because without their input we probably won't get much higher than we already are. Oh well, this whole exercise was just to have something to do on a layover.

Sorry Jetguy to rain on your parade. Hope it wasn't too callous sounding. Thought I'd try to give as gentle an explanation as I could conjure up to answer your previous query why more high-timers hadn't jumped in. It's turned into a great thread regardless though, don't you think?!

Best Regards,
