I saw the pictures of the new A340-600 today.

Gawd, that plane is LONG.  Wow! It will be quite interesting to see how are they going to fit that plane into today's airport parking gates.

By the way, Airbus has definitely taken a cue from Boeing in regards to the passenger cabin of the A340NG series. The fact the A340NG will have more headroom and larger overhead storage bins indicates that the change was needed to compete against the excellent headroom and well-implemented overhead storage bins of the Boeing 777 series.

Notice that the one shown in the Airbus Video is not the First A340-600.

On the Right hand side of the A340-600 roll out page there is a "feature". There it is.

TEDSKI,

Actually, it'll look great in NW livery. And it's not a far-fetched idea given that with NW ordering the A330-300, they now have the ability to cross-train A333-qualified pilots on the A340-600 pretty easily.

I think NW will buy 15-20 A346's to replace their 747-100/200 Classics fleet.

Looks great! When will the -500 be rolled out? Do you suppose it is possible that the A340-500 will be ordered by airlines instead of or to replace A340-300s? The -500 does not appear to be much larger than the -300, and I am sure Airbus can develop a lighter version without as much fuel capacity...or perhaps airlines won't use it to its maximum range on some routes...I don't know, just thinking....

look at the interior, the side walls are less curvy in this plane. I think it would be a good idea to incoporate the changes on the rest of the classic A330/A340. Would you think airbus is gonna do it? I mean boeing can even change the interior for CO 762. Can't they do the same thing?
Btw, it looks great.

What are they thinking!!!! How am I with a 56K modem supposed to download 22MB of video!!!

God!

Anyway, it looks great and comfortable on the inside. I'm sure it'll look nice in Virgin Atlantic colours. I suppose they'll be using them to Asia?

Good for Airbus. However, I'm looking forward to the -500 more.

I wonder when the time comes for NW to order the A340-500/600 to replace their 747-200 Classics, they will try to get Airbus to offer a P&W 4000 series engine on it to share commonality with their A330s and 747-400s.

Singapore Air,

There's a smaller version of the video available as well, it's really worth checking out! Just take the second video from the list.

Anyway, it looks great, can't wait to see it fly!

I'll agree with RayChuang here - it IS a long plane!

I wonder if its fuselage length exceeds even that of a 777-300.

Yes, the A346 is a little bit longer than the 777-300. Don't forget, the A346 has a smaller fuselage diameter than the 777, so it will need to be a little longer (or at least commit a larger percentage of interior area) than the 773 in order to carry about the same number of people.

A340-600 Looks Great!

It took me about 20 mins to download the video with my 56K modem. And that was only the smaller version.

But it was worth the wait. Excellent video with some good shots of what is involved in aircraft design.

Here a link to the 6MB version: A340-600  Big thumbs up

The "inner" engines appear to be very close to the ground. I`ve seen the engine strike pictures from Kai Tak:Does this cause any problems concerning cross winds or suspension during the tougher landings?

Opinions please, by the way it looks superb!

That's one of the first things I noticed as well Aerosol, it almost looks like the inboard engines could scrape off the ground.......looking back at the end of that video though, the main landing gear looks to be a distance of about 6-8 meters behind the front of the engine cowl......looking at it, my guess is that at flare, with the main gear that far back, the cowl is high enough that it won't scrape during lateral movement.....i.e. the wheels would hit first.......look at the last shot of the video.....

The ground clearence of the engines 2 & 3 on the A346 looks about equal to that of the 777 fitted with GE engines.

I am sure that if Airbus also offered the P&W 4000 and GE CF6 series engines on the A340-500/600 the ground clearance would be greater.

F.pier,

I think at least for VS, SR, CX and LH, their primary use will be on routes that used to be served by the older 747's.

VS will likely use the A340-600 on LHR-NRT, LHR-HKG, LHR-KUL-SYD (?), and LHR-LAX.

SR will likely use the A346 on all of its busiest international routes, given that SR is phasing out their MD-11 fleet.

CX will likely use the A346 on the HKG-JFK and HKG-YYZ routes on a non-stop basis.

LH will likely use the A346 on their routes from FRA/MUC to NRT, HKG, SIN, JNB, CPT, plus likely SFO and LAX during the winter season.

Given that it's likely we'll see at least one A346 flight a day to SFO, I'd like to know if the current A and G concourse gates can fit this long bratwurst, as I might describe the LH A346's.  Smile

I love the look of those large RR Trent 500 series engines on this aircraft. This plane finally has the power it needs or deserves to compete with the other wide-body types like the 747 & 777.

TEDSKI,

Indeed, the A340NG's cruise speed will be at bare minimum Mach 0.83. I expect these new A340 models to normally cruise at Mach 0.84-0.86 in revenue service, which means they'll keep up with the 747, 777 and MD-11's used on long international flights.

ray,
if LH intends to replace their 742s with the 346s, why do you suspect they´ll fly their 346s to NRT, HKG, SIN, JNB, CPT, LAX and SFO, all of which are cities that don´t receive LH 742 services???
however, you might be right about the winter season thing, that the 346s could be used on routes which in winter don´t need as much capacity as 744 service, f.e. SFO, LAX from MUC.
and perhaps they re-introduce a nonstop service to CPT again, would be nice.
anyway, some of the 346s might be used to increase frequencies or capactiy on some routes so except for all the current 742 destinations, which most probably will receive 346 service, almost every long-haul destination could receive 346 service sooner or later, we´ll just have to wait and see.

cheers

Routes And Parking

Mon Mar 26, 2001 5:55 am

last time i was in santiago i saw markings on the ground at the gates that said "A340-600", and a little further back were the parking marks for a "777-300". This could mean flights to santiago on the big bird (has LAN ordered them yet?)

However, can we have some more interior shots please Mr. Airbus?

Really dying to see what they have done with the 'new' interior.

I hope Olympic Airways trades in those small capacity CFM56 powered A340-300s and purchases these new powerful high capacity long range A340-500/600 models for their busy North American routes such as JFK to ATH. They will be needed in 2004 when the Summer Olympics are held in Athens.

daniel,

It depends on if LH does follow-up orders for the A340-600. If they do, I expect LH to fly to some USA destinations with the A346 on a year-round basis (e.g., DEN).

agree, i doubt that these 10 a-340-600s will be the only ones LH is getting, should only be the initial order. well, LH has a major a-340 order backlog at airbus. until 2006, LH will receive another 17 a-340s, including the -600s, and holds further options on an additional number of 16 units. if these include additional -600s, i don´t know.
